Yep, with a bit of tweaking you could make a wand start/finish.
But...heres the good news, the start switch only registers a start, the finish only a finish, so no capactors and realys are needed to take into account the two sets of wheels passing over. And best of all it measures to the tenths of seconds, not to seconds only as in the instructions. Perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OOOOOOO errrrrr......
I have the "Demon Dribbler" here on my desk.
Says it has a 30m range, which is longer if you stand between start/finish lines. Stopwatch is to the nearest second, but for adaptability its perfect...thanks!
I may need to add a capacitor and realy to take into account the two sets of wheels passing over the tapeswitch, or through an IR beam. But its looking good.

You may be able to rig the IR gates to the senders,
if the transmit distance is not adequate, you could always carry the timer on you or you board like the "mychron" timer some of the chaps in the states use.

Good one Gav, well spotted!!! looks like a commercial version of my attempt a while back. And cheaper too! I reckon i'll get one to check distances and also if I can rig pressure switches. Looks good though at £29.99

saw an ad this morning for the 'kickmaster demon dribler'. basically a football trainer wherby the ball goes through a gate and starts a timer, you go through some cones, then when the ball hits the goal is goes through another gate and stops said timer... all for 29quid!
anyone seen one by any chance? wondering whether it could be adapted to make a simple home use slalom timer?

Thanks very much to Jim Nutsack and Clingfilm for their organising and also thanks to Jim Slater and the timing crew for giving up valuable skate time so that the rest of us could prove both ourselves and kit against the clock.
Now I understand why Brands is rightly regarded as THE UK slalom site, with the TS in the afternoon offering the most exciting and testing racing I've attempted this year (which includes Paris & Gruningen). Maybe next time I'll beat somebody.

As Ross said, I broke my leg in two places and dislocated my ankle. I had a two hour operation at midnight on saturday involving many steel plates and bolts. I haven't quite had the nerve to ask when I'll be able to skate again... I hate this 4p per minute web browser.
