The Sector 9 for thr girlfriend
On 9/6/2000 mikey wrote in from (152.163.nnn.nnn)

You should look into a cosmic 1....its a pretty small board at 34".....but it carves really nice at pretty good speeds.....the flex is very very forgiving...the response is incredible.....its a perfect board for running to the store and back or just cruisin and carvin around....Ive had many friends who have got on it...and loved it from the start....definately worth checkin out......the pintail is a really good ride too....carries speed well....its pretty responsive and a bit more stable......both are definately good choices for a first time rider

Motherlode Switchback
On 8/31/2000 T Naylor wrote in from (209.208.nnn.nnn)

Perhaps the sweetest all around ride I own. I got mine slightly customized (narrower width 9 5/8. Still this board rocks. Listed at 38" it has a long wheelbase without the extra wood and wood where you need it. In otherwords, it's wide where my feet our but leaves no ollie options. Mine is set up with Hawaii blues 70 mm and Exkates. Since it is not concave, I would recommend going for the full 10 " deck. Performance wise, it turns tight and fast like a slalom board but has enough wheelbase to draw out the carves. Also, because it has no camber, it could be used for downhill in a stiffer configuration. In any case for allround carving/cruising it's my number one deck. Originally, I had it set-up for Randalls which were fabulous for big hills, but since moving back to NYC I need something more reactive so I switched back to Exkates. In terms of craftsmanship and beauty, they're second to none. Bob Villas would be proud.

Arbor
On 8/27/2000 MB wrote in from (205.188.nnn.nnn)

Hey Sigman,

Check out arbor decks or completes. They have a natural koa wood finish deck (pintail 46") that my girlfriend HAD to buy for me on the spot, it's that pretty. The deck is "sugared" rather than covered w/ grip tape. Mine came w/ Hawaii Green Krytos and a truck brand that I rejected in favor of RIIs. Great flex and 'cave shape.

dirt board
On 8/26/2000 Kaylee wrote in from (158.252.nnn.nnn)

Just hooked up a dirtboard with XT's, RII's, and a 36" Z pool deck. I moved the trucks forward 3/4" each, giving me a 7.5" tail and keeping the 17.5"H wheelbase. The randals are lightweight and I put a hard clear bushing in place of the bigger lower yellow one, making them sturdy enough for such a relatively small wheelbase. The board is light enough and the tail is big enough to where I can ollie this thing with consistency, without skyhooks. While repositioning the holes, I came upon an industry conspiracy. If you measure your nose and tail from the mounting holes, what used to be, say, a 6.5" tail is now really a 6" tail due to the difference between old school and new school mounting patterns. Even though the hanger doesn't move, measuring with the new school pattern, all tails measured with the old school pattern are now 1/2" inch longer. You are getting ripped off on your tail length. Not that it matters, I'm just trying to be as obsessive with detail as the speedboarders. (kidding) Moral of this story: RII's make great dirtboard trucks (surprised? nope) and now we have to specify how we measure our noses and tails(old or new pattern) like we have to specify how we measure wheelbase(axle or holes). Just a thought.

Sector9 for Sigman's girl
On 8/24/2000 waxfoot wrote in from (63.10.nnn.nnn)

Sigman - I think that the Sector 9 OG would be a killer choice as well. 'Course I'm biased as i just got one from Glen at SolidSkate.com. Randal II's a must and Krypto wheels. Smooth and fun. I've always liked the shape and it's a killer board for just cruising around. Definitely no stress on offending anyone here in NCDSA. Everyone here that I've read comments from and shared info with is super cool, and there are a good group of knowledgeable 'masters' out there who are more than willing to share their knowledge. (mahalo and aloha to them - they know who they are) Not only that but there's always room for more girl longboarders out there. Ride on......

Dirt Surfer
On 8/24/2000 Jesse H. wrote in from (216.78.nnn.nnn)

Hey has anyone not seen the dirt surfer yet www.dirtsurf.com . it looks pretty sweet. The only problem with it seems to be the fact that the brake activates when your foot comes off it and its on the back. You have to be a mong to ride it! I can't believe it. They do have an available handbrake though so that would be good.

Sector 9 for girlfriend
On 8/23/2000 st loop wrote in from (208.244.nnn.nnn)

Sigman: These two Sector 9 boards sound like good, safe selections. Since this is a first board (for a female, at that), I'd guess that appearances will count. I've always thought Freeride boards are pretty ... well, pretty. (I think they're at www.freerideskate.com.) There's a range of styles and sizes. IIRC, Gravity, Flexdex, and maybe TVS have introduced mid-sized boards aimed at enticing women into the hobby -- colorful floral graphics et cetera.

Anyway, I am a Sector 9 owner and I think these are nice-riding boards, good to learn on.

Sector 9
On 8/23/2000 Sigman wrote in from (12.22.nnn.nnn)

Looking to buy a board as a gift for a girl. It'll be her first board. Most likely casual use (no downhill/slalom) for now. Any reccommendations? I've been checking out a couple of the Sector 9 boards, the Cloud 9 OG and one of the Original series. Thoughts? Thanks and sorry if I'm offending anyone.

Shaft Wood
On 8/22/2000 Alex wrote in from (24.237.nnn.nnn)

Has anyone ever heard of Shaft Wood longboards? I recently aquired one, and I haven't been able to find anything about the company.

It's a "fish" shaped board, much like a gravity, the trucks are loose enough to allow large carves, but not sharp turns. The bottom reads "Shaft Wood" since 1995, but has no other markings. It's fairly flat, with a little bit of a kick, and pretty flexible.

It gets pretty good speed and handles much like a snowboard. The balance is pretty good, but it can wobble at times.

If anyone has any information about the company that produced this board I would greatly appreciate it.

Powerhouse Roadboard R-48
On 8/22/2000 michael wrote in from (204.157.nnn.nnn)

I just recently set up my new powerhouse roadboard R-48 with invaders and route 70mm kyrptonics. The flat deck is ideal for bombing hills and the shape of it controls turns with stability and speed. With this 3/4" deck I have just the right amount of flex for my weight which is about 145lbs. I am considering getting some randal 2's because it seems like they would complement the style and shape of the board.

SoulCarver
On 8/16/2000 rogerj wrote in from (198.206.nnn.nnn)

Just arrived today is a SoulCarver Trinity with RII and 70mm Aluminators (at a great price). Deck is 46" flat 11ply with a firm/slight flex (200pounds). "AM soft griptape" is unusual because it does not feel like sandpaper, but my shoes are stuck on like glue. Bearings are Terminator T2 pro Gold Bearings. Hardware, pads and drilling alignment are pretty good. This setup is well put together (you can sense the care into). Take a look!

Law,

If you read through the archives you will find that this seems to be business as usual for exkate. I have tried to help out Lonecore in his quest to have excessive shipping charges removed from his credit card. Only to have lots of promises made and no follow through or returned calls.

While I do like their products, I would never buy from them direct... they haven proven to be very flaky in my opinion... HR

Exkate Complete

Just called up the exkate guys, and they're selling theyre boards for 119 plus tax/shipping. Currently they're out of stock, but in three weeks, they should have a couple. Has anyone had experience riding their boards? They come with the torsion trucks, easy rider 70mm wheels. The guy i talked to seemed like he didnt want my business. Very pissy but other than that, has anyone bought direct from theese guys? I emailed them a couple of times, but they didnt respond, so i gave them a call and they werent happy to hear from me.

FlowLab
On 8/12/2000 MDH wrote in from (141.211.nnn.nnn)

I don't know if you rode a demo, Pre school rider, but my flowlab deck has no concave, and no flex. I think it would really help the ride if it did have some concave though. When I'm really leaning it on edge I have to toe edge to get enough leverage to hold the turn at higher speed. I haven't recieved the bearing spacers from phil yet, so speed is still the biggest issue. The hard wheels are rotten on rough surfaces also. I'm going to try some other wheels in the center 3 positions. I found some 64mm 78a hockey wheels that have a rounded shape. it should be way smoother. Has anybody else tried this?

Flowlab

Mike,Phil from Flowlab mentoned to me that they started on more flexible boards(cut-down snowboards were mentioned, too),but I'd guess that was too narrow(and expensive)an approach to selling their board. As it is,the deck they use has a little flex to it(camber+concave,twin-tipped as well),but due to the speeds this ride is comfortable at,the flex dosen't factor in much.
