Board Review
Kelly Slater 29
On 2/24/2001 Dave wrote in from (62.27.nnn.nnn)

I was looking for a review on the Slater 29 or Robb 33. As I have looked through the archives I haven't really found an opinion on those 2 boards. All I want is to glide through my hometown in Germany and do the occasional ollie to get over the curbs. I'm really wondering if the Slater 29 is too short to provide a nice cushioning of a rough road surface and if the flex will make ollieing hard or impossible? Thanx

rec. for sheila
On 2/23/2001 mbhidel wrote in from (172.160.nnn.nnn)

Sheila,

I was off the board for some years also, then saw a 46'' Arbor pintail in a shop and had to have it. I put RIIs on it instead of the trucks it comes with and kept the Krypto Hawaii 70s. The concave and flex is a blast. No tacky graphics. Beautiful koa wood with a sugared top (no grip tape) The only thing I miss is a kicktail on it so I picked up the Powell Stealth.
This board reminds me of a pig from '79 or '80 but has a great concave and a HUGE, WIDE kick and nose tail. Put on indys w/ kryptos and it rides like my old Alva decks. Arbor has a website but I haven't seen the Stealth on the Powell site yet.

What was your last board 15 years ago?

Landy
On 2/23/2001 JP wrote in from (204.168.nnn.nnn)

My first longboard was the Chief primarily to be used for carving (and it is an awesome carver!). Furthermore, this past week I had it 25+ and it was not a problem. It is a fantastic board complete with R-II's and Krypto 70 mm wheels (I just put 76 mm Krypto's and I think I like it more--It is more responsive and definitely faster). Also, check out the archives re: Landy. Chris has put the Landy loaded gun experience to the tee . . . here is the exerpt:

I ordered the LY Loaded Gun . . . The 'Gun' shape sort of remindes me of a chubby pintail, it's 3/8" thick birch and fiberglass with about an 1-1/2" of camber, 45" long, and is about 8-1/2" at it's widest point. I put my R-II's with wedges and 70mm Krypto's on it. The board is nice and firm but springy if you push into it, not squishy at all to my 170lbs. There is a definite sweet spot on the board just a little forward of center with your feet fairly close together. A few kicks to get up speed and then
you can pump back and forth to pick up more speed. I found
that if I scubbed off too much speed on a hard carve I could pump a few times to pick up speed and set my self up for the next carve. It felt very natural and comfortable. During a big hard backside sweeper I was even able to push out against the board and then relax a bit sort of like pumping in one direction, to keep up speed through the turn. It always felt very stable and predictable sort of an extension of my body. I need to scout some longer steeper locations but I expect it to perform nicely. All in all I'm very impressed and think that the board would make a good addition for anyone who likes that style of riding. . . .

I am thinking about getting either the big gun or cheif complete from longskate.com but I'm having trouble deciding which one. The cheif seems better for carving, but I also would like to cruise it in the 30+ mph range, and it seems like it would be pretty unstable with all that flex. What do you guys think? Maybe a different board altogether?

Anyboard
On 2/21/2001 Herbn wrote in from (216.107.nnn.nnn)

There really isn't any one particular board to get on.Though it's probabely a good idea to stay away from the extremes, really big/small wheels, really wide trucks, really big boards, really flexy boards,or real heavy stuff.Indy 166,Powerpaws,Kyrpto Classics,Sectors ect.lots a good wheels out there,X skates are a bit tougher than most, but a a rebegginer it's not a big issue.A good way to crossover is take your old board or something similar add soft carving bushings, big(relatively speaking) soft wheels and a long kicktail or pintail board, enough riser to keep from wheelbite and you're done.

Flowlab and Carveboard
On 2/19/2001 jana wrote in from (206.184.nnn.nnn)

I have ridden both these and like what each board can do. The Flowlab is a lot lighter so I can carry back up the hill whereas I need a ride with the carveboard. I can ollie my DCS board and even attempt some kick-flips, which I can't do with the carveboard. The carveboard is super-smooth in the carve. Neither is meant for straight speed. In the end, I'd give the every use knod to Flowlab because of the size, ride, and price.

Carveboard vs. Flowlab
On 2/18/2001 James7 wrote in from (209.9.nnn.nnn)

I've just had the pleasure of riding the Carveboard. Its great for shreading and keeping the momentum going. Yet I disagree with the going straight bit because the front truck moves on two axis making it dive to 45 degrees.Which makes it near impossible to maintain moving straight foward without loosing balance and making a carve. The Flowlab board also has this issue but has no bushing/spring resistance to promote any kind of uneasiness. The Carveboard also leaves wheel marks on the bottom of the deck obviously from not enough clearance. I've gotta give props to Carveboard though for figuring out propetual motion. Now all they've gotta do is make it lighter.

Flowlab
On 2/18/2001 Fahme wrote in from (209.66.nnn.nnn)

the flowlab is nice, but rides awkwardly since all it can do is carve. It's hard to go straght, and the ride is bumpy because of the small/hard wheels. Carveboard is better and only like 75 bucks more. PLus, it's adjustable w/ tire pressure, so you get a smooth or fast ride! Cool grip tape design 2.

Carveboard
On 2/17/2001 Fahme wrote in from (209.66.nnn.nnn)

this is the best carving ride i've ever ridden. It's ultra-responsive and sticks superbly to the road. A tad on the heavy side so it's not good for cruising, but downhill it can't be beat. Worth all the 300 bucks i spent on it (should be the last carver i buy).

Soulcarver (and Landy spring)
On 2/15/2001 JP wrote in from (206.189.nnn.nnn)

Chris, how sweet is the Landy. I have the Chief and you are SOOO right when you say springier and lighter. However, I was night riding the other night and came home only to see two pieces of glass lodged deep into my wheels--Brooklyn streets just blow!!! Anyway, thanks for the info about the Soulcarver. I can now picture exactly how the ride will be and its good to know they are a reliable company. Hey, for $100.00 I'll take it. I think the only other decks I would like to try (right now) are the Real-Wood and Sherman Van Bommer. Talk to you soon--JP

Soulcarver
On 2/15/2001 Chris wrote in from (158.252.nnn.nnn)

JP, I got a Soulcarver off of his website, same price. I got mine with Krypto's though. He sent it when he said and I was able to track it online all the way here. It's a 9-ply about 5/8" thick, kind of heavy and very stiff (I'm 170lbs). I liked the shape and the stain job on the top looks nice, there is a clear grip coat of something that works quite well. The wheel wells are nicely done and I didn't get any wheel bite with 70mm wheels. The one thing I didn't like was that it came with flat, hard plastic risers which probably made the ride rougher than needed. I am now riding a Landyachtz Loaded Gun, it's lighter and springyer (nice word). I would like to hear what you think of the Barfoot as I am looking at those as well. Enjoy! Chris

Flowlab DCS36
On 2/14/2001 jana wrote in from (206.184.nnn.nnn)

Anyone ride the new shorter deck yet from Flowlab? I have the DCS42 and was thinking the 36 might be more my size. I was it at the ASR show in Long Beach but they weren't selling any yet. Heard it would only be $175 so maybe I'll just add another board to the car.

What's up with Soul Carver Boards? They sell on ebay for about $100 and they come with R-II's and Power paw Aluminators and Terminator bearings . . . The equipment on the deck is worth about $100 . . .How are these decks? I just bought a barfoot Tri-Stringer for $121.00. I think that was a good deal. Ebay's got tons . . .Check it

anyone ever try one of these, I saw one in the nineplus surfshop today, looked a very nice board, this one was the one with no cut aways, it had some nice 65mm kryps on it, I wondered if having no cutaways would leave it susceptible to wheel bite, I guess they use risers to combat this?

Real-Wood, Soulcarving & Barfoot
On 2/11/2001 John wrote in from (206.189.nnn.nnn)

I recently bought a Landyachtz Chief with R-II's and Krypto 70mm. This is a gret carving board and it is surprisingly light. HOWEVER, there isn't a lot of room on the deck for foot placement. They said it was 9" but I measured it at 8.3 or so. Anyway, I want another deck--longboards are like tatoo's or chips--they are addicting. So, I am thinking about a board with a 9-10" deck. I really like the Real-Wood decks (but they are $$$$ and probably worth it) or a Barfoot like the one on the cover of International Longboard Mag. Oh, I also want a board that is firm with a little flex so I can try to hang 5 and walk the deck. Any suggestions or comments regarding the three boards I named above?
