Recently, it appears that the Downhillbillies were misrepresented by 2, now former members of the organization in obtaining swag for one of our fund raising efforts at our last jam that they have attempted to move on a buy-sale-trade forum on the internet instead of making it available for the event. The Downhillbillies have made a very positive effort to establish ourselves as a trustworthy and forthright group amoung the skaters and skate companies and we regret that such a situation has occurred.
We want to support the efforts of all of our DHB "members" in their efforts to obtain support for the different skate related functions they have planned. If you are planning on putting something together we have formed a Promotions Committee to avoid this type of situation in the future. Please send an email to promotions@downhillbillies.org and we will gladly assist you where possible in obtaining support for your event. We have notified vendors and other related organizations that all promotional activities are to be managed through this group.
Please let me know if you need any help or have any questions! I want to personally thank all of you out there that has shown support to the still new but growing DHB crew. Our purpose is simple: To fuel the stoke of skateboarding for all who want to participate!

About Helmets and Safety

I hate preaching, but I have to say, reading about a rider's death because he wasn't wearing gear makes me really sad. I mean, I don't understand why some kids refuse to wear safety gear in fear that it looks uncool or whatnot; wearing gear actually brings legitimacy to our sport for outsiders, and it's cool to be smart about your own safety and safety towards other people in your crew or pedestrians.
It also does not impair your movement, speed or anything like that. If anything, it gives you alot more confidence when bombing seriously steep hills at high speeds (espc. with Abec 7 bearings - whoo!). Also, for city riders, if you just carve down a hill, you never know when a car might pop out of a driveway or whack into a parked car in case you lose control, wether you ride during the day or you're a night rider (which reduces visibility), like me.
I'm 30 years old, I love longboarding and I go ride every day, but I dont pretend to be fearless like Bam Margera or Jay Adams and skate without a helmet or wrist guards. That just defies logic to me. If you wipe-out at those speeds, it wont matter who you are. I own a Pro-tec B2 Omar Hassan army helmet and Pro-tec wrist guards, they dont cost much, actually look pretty damn cool and can save your life. I'm not saying wear a helmet if youre just cruising in your neighborhood to go to the corner-store or something, but at least wear wrist guards at all times. Falling on your hands can really suck, which can happen even at low speeds when you hit a rock.
"Skate for life, live to skate" as they say, but you can't do that when you are dead. Wear gear, keep it challenging and keep it fun.

NCLB! Skateboard events scheduled ages ago for this wknd in the DC/Baltimore area kept this longboarder busy....so I couldn't make the drive down south to skate the awesome Hobby Park this time. I'm glad you all had a blast...same here up north starting with the Mid-Atlantic Skate Series, the 3rd of 4, this time in Arlington,VA. The longboard contest in the bowl had me going nuts on the mic. Lots of crazy skating going down.....then on Sunday, at Lansdowne, the Birthday Bash had skaters from MD,VA,PA, & NY surfing the concrete waves Lansdowne is famous for and enjoying birthday cake for longboarder Nino and several shortboarders too. Wheels were rolling as fast as the bearings would allow and people were loving it...the best and biggest session Lansdowne has seen since the BDS Jam earlier this year!

I want to thank everyone that came out the our late summer jam yesterday at Hobby Park! The heat kept the crowd down from our usual bunch but the twenty plus riders that were there all stoked to the max! The most rewarding thing for me about yesterday's jams was the large number of new faces that were joining the DHB's for the first time. We had close to 10 new riders coming in from Greensboro, Durham/Chapel Hill, and as far a way as Wilmington/Long Beach (5 hour drive.) These last crew consisted of some supper cool young longboarders who also were tearing it up on homemade balance boards! These kids are killer and watch out because they all can ride!
We have a new member to the gnarly crash and burn squad Bloody Bill! Bloody Bill ate it big time on the fast side of the Hobby Hill getting multiple scrapes and three cracked ribs! Bloody Bill has joined the ranks of Gnarly John in DHB Legendary crashes! I called him today and he is doing fine and is stoked about the crew. It only hurts when he breathes.
Ron Olson came up from Georgia and was killing an extremely sketchy and difficult GS that started actually past the starting blocks on the side. I ran the thing and almost ate it going to hot into one of the offsets.
The local Statesville crew turned out in force. Thanks go out to Brent, Dholt, Jaybird, Rookie, Evan Mac T, and SST, Lil E, and Dex for all of their help and support of the growing DHB!

Hey Longboarder, i thought maybe you guys would dig watching this.. Since Longboard skateboarding came from Surfing.. anyhow here is a time lapse i did of Renny Yater shaping a Balsa longboard. and for you who don't know who Renny is.. He has been shaping surfboards since the '50's... Ever see Apocolypse Now? It's a Yater t-shirt the Sargent is wearing and the board they take off the boat.. the guy is a ledgend.. anyhow. i was working on a video that fell apart after 9-11.. but this is the clip of the shaping of Da Board.. 2 second's of film every 2 mins for 3 8 hour days.. condensed down to 3 mins... Serioiusly it took him 3 solid days to shape the board.. anyhow enjoy

There has been some debate regarding the name of the Downhillbillies organization...is it Downhill Billies, Down Hillbillies, or Downhillbillies? Tonight it was decided after much thought and consideration and to go along with the structure of the name on our website that the official spelling/structure of the name of this fast growing, stoked to the max, skate confederation is "Downhillbillies". For all of you members out there in skate land, please begin to use this form of the name in your correspondence.
Thank you all for sharing the stoke of skateboarding! Proud to be a DHB!

Hey fellow longboarders, Don't forget that this Saturday's (8/20)contest at Arlington Skate Park in Virginia, just outside of Washington,DC will include a separate longboard contest in the bowl...all ages and men & women, boys & girls, together in one big 30-minute jam format after I introduce each of you to the judges, spectators, and to your peers for your first run. Then, the following weekend on Saturday 8/27 there will also be a separate longboard category, same format, at the St Mary's County Skate Park, in southern Maryland in Lexington Park,MD. Both contests are part of the MASS(Mid-Atlantic Skate Series). Entry fee is $20, each contest day, but you may also skate in the street contest and your own age-group division in the bowl contest on your shorter board(or your LB)as well. Women can skate in the separate women's division as well as their own age-group division, in addition to the LB contest. All proceeds go to the local Capitol Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation. Come on out and I hope to see you all there!

Man! Like Marion, I just got on the forum after a few days and...
First off- I hate to read about the loss of a fellow longboarder! One of the beautiful things about skateboarding in general is that there's an instant bond between skaters that often sparks a friendship between people who would otherwise not have met each other. The other side of that same coin is that when there's a loss, we ALL feel it! May his memory be eternal! And let others of us learn from a mistake that caused a death.
Secondly, Marion, congrats bro!! I'm stoked for you like mad! I hope I didn't sound TOO out of it when you called Sunday. I had unintentionally dozed off on the couch while watching TV and was JUST waking up when you called.
John D- sounds like you had a blast at the contest! The DHB will have to come up sometime and check out that scene!!! P.S., I saw your pic in the latest CW! Rock on!
Things are shaping up with the house! Hopefully we'll be moved in and settled before we know it.
Later bros!!

I just caught up on this forum and saw the posts about the skater Matt who got killed. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this time of his loss.
The wearing of helmets has always been one of personal choice but I am always afraid when my skating partners choose not to wear them. I hope that those of you that I care about that normally don't wear them will reconsider your decision. I don't ever won't to lose any of my friends to this type of accident. The DHB's are a special group of people that I am proud to be friends with and I hope that we can some day have 100% of the crew wearing helmets when they skate. Don't get me wrong. I am a true believer in the freedom of choice. If you choose not to wear pads or a helmet that is clearly your decision but because I care about my group I hope that a tragedy like this one will make everyone take pause and consider the potential deadly consequences that could be the result by not making the correct decision.

insane! I tried to keep up on the mic but the longboard mayhem endured as everyone fought for runs in the jam format. I will not indulge the results, but I will say that there were Gravity, Dregs,Sector 9, Bulldog, Jam,Powell, and homemade longboards being ridden by kids and adults, men and women! There will be another LB category in the bowl at the upcoming contests in Arlington,VA(aug 20th) & at St Mary's Skate Park in Lexington Park, Maryland,(aug 27th). Every time I hear of a Skateboard death it effects me deeply. While I try to skate by example (wearing a helmet) I cant help but think of all of the skaters that I see without helmets that I say nothing to. How do we change the image problem of helmets?
My deepest sympathy to Matt's family and friends.

My sympathy to Matt's family and friends.
My mom is a head injury nurse and the reality is that you don't have to hit that hard to do some perminant damage. Sometime the effects are never even identified as the result of bumping your head. Slight changes in mood, personality, memory, head aches, etc. can show up weeks after you recover from a concussion.
I've ridden drunk at night with no helmet and all sorts of other stupid things. I'll try to keep WAC Matt in mind as I strive for 100% helmeted on all rides. I stongly recommend wrist gaurds as well as they can help you save your skin, head or even life. Being able to use your hands in a fall is very helpful.
It is really stupid to ride without a helmet.
I checked out the WAC longboard site earlier this week. It looks like a good crew, enjoying the pure stoke of hitting hills. Keep Matt's spirit with you. God bless his loved ones.
