Expanding my horizons . . .

Hey, I've been longboarding for close to a year now, my first board was just a sector nine island hopper with Carver C7 trucks just to have fun on some hills and dodge people through campus (C7s are a blast by the way, if you haven't ridden them, find someone who has some and try them out, they're unlike any other trucks I've ever ridden). I quickly learned how much I loved it and got a more balanced setup, with another sector nine deck (46 inches) and randall RII 180 trucks. I'm looking to expand my horizons (and collection) once more and I want to get a downhill board, preferrably a drop deck. I looked at the landyachtz evo and DH race, as well as a few others by other companies, but I'm wondering what you all would suggest I buy. Pointers on trucks and wheels are appreciated as well! Thanks.

a wonderful, longboard-friendly concrete skate park. After working OT on Saturday I met a carload of longboarders from the NY/NJ area at the Downer for a session. Fantastic weather kept the park packed with skaters. Lots of longboards were in action. In fact, there were 3 BDS LBs(Tyler,Sensei, & myself)in action. Between Tyler, Sensei,C-Dub, and Miley, they carried down about 20 different longboards, many of them home-made, custom boards...it was great to try them out. Lansdowne skate park is currently open once school gets out til dark, and it opens on the wknds at noon til dark(which is 7pm nowadays). Everybody come on out to Lansdowne on Sat Oct 29th for a banked park slalom race(different course than last time) set by Cabbage and myself...Please note:you must skate in costume. Also, compete in the Halloween Costume Contest. All entrants must roll past the judges on a skateboard. You need not race in the same costume as the costume contest. I will see you there, unless you are square! This is an official Baltimore County Parks & Rec event...oh yea, Lansdowne will open at 10am on race day...soon to be posted on the Contest Calendar.

The Cross Country distance longboard racing looks like it's getting more popular. It looks like most of the races include some hills to bomb but does anyone have a 5k and a 10k flatland time for me to compare?

Hello. I have been longboarding for a couple years and I am currently looking for a new board (friend lost mine). I ride regular ithink (left foot in front). Does anybody know if a Loaded Vanguard would be a good board for some hill bombing, some carving and cruising, sliding, and hill carving. Also, would it be okay for pumping? Any help would be appreciated. And what are some good hard/sliding wheels?

Anyone that has ridden with me or seen my posts know I love my Bozi Mad Bomber II! Well, I love it even more! My man Brent, Core DHB For LIFE, has hooked me up with some serious custom paint work! Check this out! It costs but how cool it is to have a one of a kind!
Brent, you are my bro! Thanks for the custom art work and all the work you are doing on the race!

Sir Adam of Willoughby: Dude, you are obviously new to this forum because you are younger than a bunch of us! Welcome back to skating! Our crew here in North Carolina are super stoked about longboarding and have a few suggestions. As far as trucks, in my humble opinion, if you are looking for a good all around carving and hill bombing truck go with either Randal II 180's or 180 Seimics (45 degree front and 30 degree rear). Both have their pluses and minuses but I ride both and love them. The Randals are turny and stable and easy to manage where the Seismics are a little more techy with there springs and allen wrench adjustments. They are both stable at speed. As far as a board there are tons of options but here are the companies the DHB love (not in any particular order): Bozi Boards, Longboards By Fatboy, Insect, Gravity, Loaded Boards, Kebbek, Landyachtz, Wicked Skateboards (Winged Wonder to be specific). Speed boards are Big Red X Landyachtz and Subsonic. Wheels: Again, just in my humble opinion, ABEC 11 Gumballs or Flywheels or 3dm Avilas are the wheels we ride the most on our longboards. I have a set of 80a Gumballs on my 58" Wicked Skateboards Winged Wonder and they are just a great cruising wheel. They are grippy, fast, and roll over everything...well..almost everything....and 3dm Avilas are fast, wide, and stable.
Hope this is helpful. Go to www.downhillbillies.org and go to the links page and there are links for most of the companies I mentioned above. Also, for skate shops in my opinion Purple Skunk has the best customer service around and Solid Skate is just that ...solid. Sk8kings are a great resourse for slalom.
Good luck...and stop that old man talk!

Dear Boarders, I'm now 40 and want to get back into skateboarding after a 25 year hiatus. I don't want to do any fancy tricks but simply regain that flowing feeling of cruising and carving on my local suburban streets. What kind of board should this 215lb skier get? what size and what trucks and wheels? gotta get back to the garden! Sir Adam Of Willoughby

First, start off making small pushes using your left foot with your right foot(goofy foot) on the board...usually the front of your right foot just barely covers the front 4 bolts or within a hands-width of your front bolts but towards the middle of the board. Take a small push and then place your left(rear) foot on the deck towards the rear wheels( a bit in front of those wheels), flex both knees and ankles(make them small)ie, stand in an athletic stance comfortably....then balance on your board as you roll forward. Continue doing so and you will gain more experience w/balance....do this on a flat area first then on a slightly sloping area. Also, practice stepping off your board at a slight angle and running out so the board will not hit you from behind....again, start by doing this while travelling slowly, then gradually work your way up to a faster pace...anyways, allow your left foot to step off the board while you balance on your goofy(right) foot...step off to the front and left side of your board, then quickly continue to run it out to the front and left side of your board....slow yourself down and be aware of your loose board...hopefully, it stops to the right of you or passes you on your right side.....eventually, you'll want to learn to carve some turns to scrub speed......always look behind and in front of you to make sure no cars are around...trucks, busses,bikes,etc...I'll let someone else help you w/sliding...but, just remember, take it easy...and work your way slowly up to speed....if going too fast and you need to bail, learning how to roll it out(as in doing a tumbling-type roll) is helpful...this is for when you need to bail.....but I'm assuming we are going slow at the moment and not bailing...just working on controlled stops, etc. Does this help? Oh yea, invest in some knee and elbow pads, some wrist guards or slide gloves and a helmet. It is cool to wear safety gear and just plain dumb not to do so....especially when riding down a hill. Have fun!

Hi, I'm kinda new to longboarding. What's the rail of a board? (not the tail but just the side, if so would that be the left or right side-depending on if I ride regular or goofy). And what do you mean by throwing your back side around? Sorry I jsut don't wanna be eating asphalt until I make sure I at least understand what I'm doing. PS Does anyone have any tips or pointers for pumping? I wanna understand the basic mechanics of it.

Hi, I just recently started longboarding about a week ago, but haven't been able to get off the board since (it just sucks that it always rains here in Florida-which is the only time I don't ride). I'm just posting because I'm looking for any tips you guys could give a beginning LB. If any knows of any good areas to ride in Gainesville, please let me know too. I'm looking for any pointers on LB that you guys can give. I ride goofy on the board and usually just stick to side streets and neighborhoods. Thanks for the help! -Marli

If you know many of the DHB's you know we fill out our britches...some more than others! Bring that SICK Arbor on up I-77 and we'll share our hills with ya! We can be business like when the situation calls for it but you know what we really are about is going fast down a hill, around some cones on occassion, and just sharing the stoke of what we think is just the coolest activity you can do standing up...well, at least the second coolest... and that is riding a board with wheels! Drop me an email and we will get you hooked up with the crew...I am sure the boys are up for a bombing session soon!
