We may be a bunch of crazy asses. We may be a little on the edge of sanity. But we have a BADASS logo designed by Tim Shawl (www.timshawl.com)
Look for www.downhillbillies.org to be up and running in late February. Sales of logo wear will be available to support the website. The DownHill Billies are a loose organization of downhill, longboard, slalom, and what have you, skateboarders that is focused on sharing information, sharing friendship, and sharing the stoke of our sport. Thanks go to all of you who have inspired us in the past and continue to inspire us today! We may not be as gnarly as the BLR boys but we are just as ugly! (Just joking Hackett)

Exit 46 - Next Session SUNDAY FEBRUARY 13th, NOON

This session will be pretty much identical to all the others, both accomplished and attempted. See here for details:
http://www_slalomskateboarder_com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=2375
As usual, everything is weather-dependant. Things yesterday DID NOT disappoint my decision to call the session. It rained in White Oak (the nearest town to Exit 46) right up until noon. The road is probably STILL wet.

Wesley and the DHB Crew: Wes, it's bad up here. Even it clears down that way getting out of Statesville will be tricky. With snow and ice all over the road and more predicted tonight tomorrow is going to be a mess. I concur with you...time to call it for tomorrow. I am out of town next week at soccer tournement with Hannah but I can skate the following weekend.
Let me know. By the way, DHB crew, drop me a line or call me if you want to hear about the logo development.
Wesley, thanks for coordinating everything.

OK, here's my call:
It's raining now and will probably stay gloomy for the rest of Saturday. There's an 80% chance of rain during the night. It may stop raining Sunday morning, but will the road dry? If it's cloudy and gray, then even if it isn't raining, it's going to be cold and the road will be wet well into the afternoon. Plus, the shoulder of the road will be wet and mucky where we park.
I want to skate tomorrow, but don't want to drive 120 miles to stand around and wait for pavement to dry.
My initial reaction is to POSTPONE for a week til February 5th. I know Marion's schedule is day-to-day because of the kids, but I also know it's snowing and freezing rain is falling in Statesville and Athens. I'd hate for anyone to hit the road tomorrow with any ice or nasty stuff on the bridges and overpasses.
So what we got is rain everywhere Saturday afternoon and most of the night with a slight window of no rain on Sunday but no reason to believe the road will dry out anytime soon tomorrow. Also, tomorrow isn't going to get past 45, so most of the day will be in the '30s and low '40s. That's COLD, DAMP and NASTY for a Sunday.
I'm inclined to call it and delay a week til next Sunday. Plus, maybe another week will give 66 some time to dig out of his post-vacation hole and make an appearance.
Any discussion or do I call it now?
And don't forget: anyone who want to go bomb that hill certainly doesn't need me there for any reason. I just won't be showing up at my own event and there won't be any Turner cones.

Exit 46 on Sunday

The weather is pretty much what I expected: totally weird and unpredictable.
Watch this space Saturday morning for a call on the Exit 46 Session. Earlier this week the forecast had it raining all weekend. Now it's raining Saturday, sunny and mild on Sunday and the rain kicks back in on Monday. So there's really no need to make any decision until it gets closer to Sunday afternoon. So far, not a single forecast more than two days in advance has been accurate around here since Christmas.

Exit 46 Session WEATHER DISCLAIMER

On 1/20/2005
WT
wrote in from

(205.188.nnn.nnn)
I failed to mention one thing. The January 30th Exit 46 session is all WEATHER DEPENDANT. I don't skate in the rain and I don't travel to skate if the EXPECTED HIGH IS LESS THAN 40 DEGREES!
So if things go downhill fast on the weather front in the next 10 days, then count me out. Of course, anyone else is more than welcome to go skate and do whatever. It's not like I HAVE to be there. If you're cool with skating in driving rain or bundled up like Nanook Of The North, then have at it. I'll be home, though, enjoying the benefits of central heat and well-made bourbon cocktails.
No need for it to be a secret, though. We'll know by Friday or Saturday if things are good. Just keep the forecast in mind.

Session at Exit 46 Sunday, January 30th, NOON

I feel like a fish out of water posting on the LONGBOARDING forum 'cause I don't longboard! But since the Downhill Billies keep an eye here, I wanted to pass this along.
NCL and I will session JANUARY 30th at NOON at the Exit 46 hill:
Directions are simple: get on I-77 and go to Mile Marker 46 in Fairfield County, South Carolina to the "WHITE OAK" exit. If you can't find it from there, you have no business driving an automobile on a public highway! It's about 90 miles from Statesville and 200 miles from various parts of Georgia.
The hill is long (1/2 mile) and the surface I would grade a 7 out of 10. It's old asphalt, but smooth, hard and fast. There is no crown, a few cracks at the edge of the road and reflectors down the middle. No big deal. The plan is simple: show up, skate til you're tired and go home. I'll probably set an intermediate slalom course for jamming on, but if enough people show up we'll set a dual course and do some racing. Also, this hill is long enough to set TWO COURSES: a hybrid at the bottom and more of a GS/Longboard slalom course at the top.
Marion and I sessioned there the day after New Year's and it was CLEAN. No need to sweep or blow. With the weather we've had this month I have no reason to believe anything has changed. The hill is open to everthing: carving, cruising, sliding, stand up downhill, whatever.
Be advised, though, that this place is ISOLATED. Anyone who has visited will tell you that you have go someplace else just to get close to the middle of nowhere. There are a few places to eat or get something to drink up and down the interstate at other exits, but NOTHING is within walking distance of this location.
See y'all next Sunday.

Well, I finally made it back to Kona after about 23 years. I went with a longtime friend who just happened to be the last person I was there with 23 years ago. I have been skating the streets here lately for about the last year or so and enjoying it. Anyway, when we got there it was about 35 degrees with a light wind. Pretty chilly but I wasn't sure if my knees were shakin' because of the cold or because I was about to drop in at KONA!! It was exciting. The place was loaded with groms and even a few people our age. My friend ended up eating it at the end of the snake run while I was trying to shred the J-run. I saw him come limping over with no skate. I didn't know what to think. It turned out he sprained his ankle. He had to stop skating after that but didn't mind if I continued. I handed him a camera and said take some pics. Then I said, watch this s#@!. I haven't busted my ass yet but I bet I do now that you have my camera. Sure enough on the third run, I'm coming out of a carve at the end of the J-run and the board gets out from under me, one foot still on the board the other planted on the wall. I went flat on my back..ugh!!! I pulled my hammy a little but got right back up and started skating. I didn't want to think about it too much. Damn it was fun. My friend said he would be back despite his injury. I went ahead and got a annual membership. Hell I might even have my 39th Birthday party there. haha. If i didn't strech every morning I know that my injuries would be much worse so if yer a geezer like me and you are doing some aggressive skating, you might want to get into a strech routine.
