i am so stoked not only after ordering my new swift 40, but now i can slide. I decided i needed to learn how to slide to scrub off some speed on my new ride, I actually did. I never thought that my S9 supercruiser w/R2 180 and 73mm 78a wheels would slide, nothing can stop me now Muahahaha.

Miko, well it sounds like you ain't messing around, which is very good. I think that setup will compliment your style at the moment with worlds and all. so its not like complete night and day between your decks. the only thing i would say is maybe invest in some sliding wheels like the gravity sliders- 73mm 94a. not to knock the gumballs but you will be very amazed what you can do on those wheels. plus since they are over 70mm it will give you that momentum you are used to. i don't think going from your setup to mine would be the best thing comming off the season but those wheels will blow your mind. of course the 88a's are good too but i still recomend those gravity sliders just in case. i figure cliff would be running something around that range so watch out.
by the way the title of this is a joke considering you mostly did setup slides like you would for racing. but we will break you into full sliding soon. sorry that i can't make your tour de bay area. but i am saving my pennies in a big jar.

G-Fest...

Hey Wu-man... I won't be going to the G-fest, cause I'm putting all my pennies and time on the Worlds. I'll be ready to switch to downhill mode after that, and one of the first things I want to do is hit the Berkeley hills with Cliff... I've got a shorter mini-downhiller that rocks that I want to work the slides more on.
Cliff... it's ON... we'll talk and race at the Worlds and figure out the best time to get together.
Everett... I went with the Comet 36 DH Spoon, except I did a couple weird things with the setup. The nose is concave and it naturally adds steering to the front truck. I put a Randall RII 150mm on it and de-wedged it 5deg which probably puts it back at about 50deg. The I mounted a 35 deg Randall DH on the rear using the back two holes - I match drilled the other two further back on the kicktail, so it *adds* about 3-5deg to the tail giving me probably 37-40deg for a very stable rear end, and a hole2hole w/b of about 24" So it's a little hammock setup that cups you into it when you're swinging about sliding. I'm running 88a Gumballs on it right now... pretty big, but they slide well. I'm probably going to use this thing for the Super G at the Worlds - after my first test ride, it feels like a lean, mean slider. Not quite the wiry little things most people seem to be riding but I'm coming from a 31" hole2hole w/b on my speedboard w/dh trucks, so it feels like a little sports car at about 25-30mph.

Miko,
I'd be happy to give you a tour of Berkeley. At the moment, I'm in the UK. I'm running slide clinics this weekend, the 25th and 26th of September in Cornwall. Talk to me at the Worlds about when the time might be right.

slide gloves would be necessary

the first step to learning how to slide is making/getting slide gloves. I learned that the hard way, thinking that i could just keep my hand in position and not actually putting it down too hard on the ground to avoid it, but that is NOT a good idea. Its like footbraking without shoes. well not quite, cuz u can kinda get away with having some skin on ur palms. but once i slid going a little too fast, and got a blister the size of a nickel and soaked my hand when it popped.
so the idea of a slide is that ur going to turn so hard that ur wheels break loose, and ur trying to turn UP the hill. at least thats how i think about it. after u have ur slide gloves made (using cutting board or UMHV plastic as slide pucks), go down a hill with moderate speed - it is actually easier to slide going fast than it is going slow - drop ur back knee, and place ur leading hand (for frontside) on the ground and turn real hard. Hmm, i think thisll help u out more, i dont have the best online demonstrations of slides... http://www.geocities.com/sk8sanjose/sliding.html

Is that YOU there Mr. Wu? (Steven) If so, when are you back up here in S.C. We'll make a trip up to the east bay for a Tunnel Session, or better yet... a hill tour of the area sometime after the Worlds. Maybe we could entice Mr. Coleman to host a hill tour possibly? Let's talk in about 1 month.

Steven- Hiller is not in SF, it is in Berkeley at the bottom of the legendary Old Tunnel Road. It is very steep, it is about 200 yards long and when speedboarders skate it they get up to a little over 60 mph. I have slid it when it was raining and i slid well over 50 yards. But when it is dry out and you slide it you feel like half of your wheel is left on the hill because you slide so much.

after throwing down a slide, it hurts me to see all the urethane i left behind on the road. it is cool tho - it totally blows my mind when i look at them track marks, cuz its crazy how those lines are so perfectly drawn with a pendulum (i havent quite broken into the 360+ territory so i have yet to see the figure 8)
everett - where is breaker? sounds gnar. have u heard of hiller? its in sf and i believe its like 22% grade....i wanna check that out
and about that faltown.... very impressive video. I dont mind that its sped up, because if i saw them skating in person, my jaw would most likely drop, even if there going a little slower than in the video. But one thing i noticed is that there running short boards that are like almost shorties with wheels that look like the new school wheels. are they doing those tricks on a trick deck, or a downhill setup?

What about those of us who refuse to give up flip-flops and bare feet? I love the feel of riding barefoot, but I obviously can't drag my toes. My heels have gotten used to heel dragging, so I've been sticking with that for now. It's even tough to toe-drag in flip-flops, but I get it done. I'll have to give in and switch over to close-toed shoes when winter kicks in, but for now it's barefoot and sandals all the way. I still haven't quite figured out how to slide, I'm afraid the wheels might be too soft, but that may just be my lame excuse for being a wuss. If someone could give me a walkthrough, I would be forever grateful.

Miko, oh for sure, style and flow are what count the most. but it all depends. if you have a good paved road thats long the flow will come out. especially if the road has any corners to it to give something to set up into. a lot of time it doesn't, thats when its comes down to what tricks can you bust. sergio has that mentality all the time, which i think is great. i mean the second hill that is in the extras footage is gnarly. and he is just spinning and sliding everywhere. but that does take some major balls hence why only a couple of guys are doing it right now. i would say hit up miramar just buy whatever wheels. instead of your racers pick up some 70mm 90a krypto hawaii k's and you'll be fine. then you will have that smoothness like breamo, jim, and cliff.
not much promise here. i hit a hill called breaker and its crazy. like miramar but three times as long or more. and it has all of these blind corners. but you get saved because if you mark it right you will slide before any danger areas appear. but yeah....i kind of wasn't thinking too bright on that one. did it gloves only, super sketch. oh, and the pavement sucks!! if you think miramar is bad you should hit up this one its like a challenge to not get knocked off of your board.
and miko the tracks look cool and all. but when you see the figure eights in them with additional spins you really got it going on.
and for you guys out there, yes noah is right they did speed it up. you can just see it in the footage i was just wondering how much difference was from the internet version to the real thing. its been done in skating and surfing before for off angles that don't really capture the image in ratio to what is happening in real time. to make it more pleasing to the eye and make the video more solid. but crazy none the less. i still want to know how steep those hills were cause like a lot of you i have gone 540 with the toeside pendulum but never 720. i could never get the momentum to bring me back around regardless of my head positioning or my arm throw.

Hey Everett! I'm mostly just funnin' ya with all this... I'm sure that I'll visit Miramar and Alo Vera or whatever it is, crappy pavement and all, when I get my 36" Comet Downhill Spoon set up. After all, you're doing all this awesome stuff with sliding, and I'm pretty much an illiterate pendylummerguy who likes to go as fast as I can. Sorta dumb in many ways. It's always fun when you've tossed a pendulum at 35-40 and walk back up the hill and see an 80-100ft set of wheel marks though. Ya gotta go fast or those tracks look wimpy man! 8-)
As an observer, I think it's less about speed and more about smoothness for me. If you can make those tricks really flow, that's what impresses me. If it's too slow, there seems to be all kinds of kinks in the flow. While I totally dig what Sergio does in 'Flow' I love the smoothness of Cliff and Jim Cluggish. Mike Bream pulls some nice looking stuff as well. We'll probably see him at the Worlds as well. He's always fast although I haven't met him in a heat yet.
I'll get over to Miramar with the Wu-man sometime soon and try to throw down. We'll have to fit that in between the Worlds, running Bonny Doon road at 50mph, and the new Scotts Valley Skatepark that will be finished NEXT WEEK! Waves are on their way as well, so there's one more thing to jam in the schedule between school, work, skate, son, skate and work! Miss you man.

I am very sad to hear people saying that faltown are speeding up there slides for the video. The things they are doing are bad ass and it would make me sad it that video was not very real. i also would like to know what kind of stuff they are using to skate. There gloves doing really seem to slow them down at all and their wheels just seem to slide like the road is wet. Which brings me to the question is the road wet. That would be cheating. Also what kind of wheels are they using they slide better then anything i have ever seen. I just hate to hear that the faltown videos might be fixed to make their slides look better.

I think that the people who have seen the Faltown Video should know that over half of the video is not in real time. Most of the slides are spead up to make them look much more advanced. Don't get me wrong, the video is awesome and the combos those guys throw down are amazing (especially the toe-side 720 nose grab)but anyone who knows sliding well knows that it is close to impsossible to slide around a corner backwards at 35 mph on a one way road. With that being said i still give major props to all the guys involved in the video.

steven,
thats great you at least hit up miramar. that hill is so fun but kind of takes it out of you. after a few runs i feel hammered. but sc is where its at. i mean the hills aren't the best but when you consider the surf and the skating, there is nowhere else i would want to be.
wade, yeah i love my rIIs but they have their pros and cons just like everything. i recommend them but if not i also am an avid independent supporter. my slide deck has indies on it and its badass. but my landy has rIIs and is good as well.
hirioto, yeah dude its me talking that trash. like i said their a good company but not for sliding. i know they press decks for other people but until that is under comet i don't go there.
faltown, your...............insane. i love all the new 360 slides and the grabs they really go my attention. i was wondering what kind of hills are these taken from. a long smooth paved run or just short hills. i am also interested in your glove designs. did you do them or what. that nose blunt one footed heelside slide was gnarly. and how fast were you going. online videos can be off so i was just wondering. insane once again... i bow down

Note to the people who were talking trash about Comet skateboards: Comet makes the blank decks for Bulldog skates and then bulldog prints on them. This is just to let people know that Comet has the ability to make good sliding boards such as the Bulldog, they just don't.

miramar is dope.....i do more sliding than rolling on that hill, and im still hauling ass! haha i love it.
santa cruz most definitely has short but steep runs. But the greatest things about the roads over there is that u can get creative and ride anything paved and turns super fun, like arroyo seco, which has a driveway that turns a 90 degree left followed by a dropping right turn that swings around to drop u down a hill to exit the driveway and hit the road the opposite direction, so u gotta swing a 180 to go downhill again. Also, the sidewalks have rounded lips so u can definitely mess around on those and do something. i dont know if u can call anything u do on it a trick, but fun nonetheless. truly sidewalk surfing. didnt say much bout sliding, maybe i should post in sidewalk surfing, but we got started on SC on this forum...

I agree with you on the whole speed element of skating but you have to consider where i started. i mean because i surfed going to san jose or sf wasn't really my top priority. but in santa cruz there really isn't much. for your deck setups there were but not really mine. i had all the downtown hills and miramar but that was about it. and they aren't runs like you guys do. they are a block or two and steep to super steep. in addition the pavement can vary quite a lot, where the hill might be paved but the top and bottom wouldn't be. that causing really slow entry speed and more focus being on the freestyle sliding. if i was in sj or sf i would be used to doing that whole set up slide thing but i really didn't have that option with santa cruz. it was pretty much take what you can get. but that happens in life you got to make due. but whatever this tiny, and i mean tiny, hill by my house is pretty fun. i busted a 540 slide to fakie pendulum revert and that was super cool. my buddy who had never slided before was doing this coleman slide to two handed coleman one foot. it was weird but insane none the less. hopefully i will buy a bigger deck so when i come up there i can keep up with you guys (well a bit more at least) cause this 31" board is seeing its final days i beleive. but i will keep it up. hopefully putting some of my harder tricks in the bag so they can be done at higher speeds.
miko if you can do slides at 40mph on a 31" sc old school please let me know. i will be very impressed. have fun. and stay safe. oh, good luck at the worlds. just take 4 no doze pills before your race and i am sure you will do good. :p
and yes i am still trying to keep up with jim and cliff. but it will take some more time.......i think.

I kept having to make a 90 degree turn down a side street to slow down and run it out. Good times, good times. :)
