These hark back to the days of Snurfing,but with better tip into the turns,and metal edges(something I added to my Snurfer in '78).Scary thing is that they're 'legal' on some ski hills,which I'm against. Still,as a 'toy' snowboard,they could be worse,I guess.You can pull nifty Ollie-based tricks to a fair degree,which isn't in the snowboard repertoire(at least until Gilmour makes those electro-magnetic bindings),and on hardpacked snow,they do kinda turn.In backyard riding,you want a packed area to start your run with,as otherwise you just stand there. Compared to the Sims/Weber/Toft 'snowboards of '80 vintage,these new things suck.It's an old idea,done new-school,with very limited capabilities.But the kids love 'em. Compared to a true on-hill board,like say my 200cm Tanker,it's a bad joke.7 mph vs. 40 mph. Limp skidded turns vs. 270* carved ruts. Kickflip shuvits at 6" altitude vs. monster 360* double grab airs. Stuck in 6" of soft snow vs. Charging it through woods in 24" of fresh Pow with a 6' base. It's a TOY!

I am sorry to inform you that ILB is dead. I think the longboarding and slalom world is really missing it.
It is my personal opinion that Concrete Wave is trying to do much and not doing any of it to well.
We need a publication that caters to us and our interests (the majority of the topics we discuss here) - longboarding and slalom as well as other off-shoots (cross-trainers, luge, etc).
We should all try to get ILB back or see if Tom Browne can create a new publication that meets our needs.
Only my opinion.

What are some good longboarding magazines? All the skateboarding magazines I currently read focus only on shortboarding and when I try to look up International Longboarder online, the link fails. Help! It's bad enough that I'm the only over 17 year-old skater/longboarder in town. I at least want to keep up with the world.

Hugh,it's funny you should mention the Tierney's ability to 'over' carve and bury the rail;I did exactly that while demoing them up at Stratton.I was totally snaking nice fluid carves,and the ground reached up and yanked me right off my feet! Now,I'm aware of 'booting out' on my snowboards,and I tend towards binding angles that keep my toes from getting stubbed while riding,but this was Sudden!,like WHaM,you're Down,sucka! I wasn't hurt,but was startled at how fast things went from groovy to el-splato. I hope they (the Reps at Tierney) took my hint of adding some ever-slick or delrin to the side-rails on these. Meanwhile,SMS (our Race School at Stratton) adopted these for training the snowboard racers,and have had good results with them.

Hey PSR,
The final thoughts and opinions should be up pretty soon from the "real" snowboarder Steve.
Mine come down to:
*Flowlab - easiest to learn and get good carving action on, especially for novice riders... most fun on medium speed, wide hills. Nice economical x-trainer... 15 minute learning curve.
*Freebord - most snowboard looking when you watch someone else ride it. Best trainer for learning to work your edges. Hardest to ride, but with possibly the biggest payoff if you get it down. Good on most grades and road doesn't need to be wide. It'll hurt you, so be prepared to fall... 4 - 8 hour learning curve.
*Carveboard - By far the most surf-like. Needs a steep hill, wide too. Deep deep carves are capable under control. Easy to learn and loads of fun... get rides back up the hill because these dogs are big and heavy. Nice setups, but an expensive x-trainer... 15 minute learning curve.
*Teirney Rides - Not too hard to learn. Deep deep carves under control on this board too. Tons of fun and very stable at speed (up to about 40 mph if you have the nerve)... really teaches you foot and ankle control (if you don't properly control the carves, the rail will drag) Nice x-trainer, but a little on the expensive side too... 90 minute learning curve.
So which one do I want? That's an easy one... the ones that I don't have! HR

Hey Buddur, don't worry, I always like to be clear as to who I am, I dont hide behind anominity becuase I like to think I try my best. The bottom line is that we had a deal to trade stickers for a tailbone. I did not manage to get you a tailbone, it fell out of the package.
I have no idea what happenned to your e-mail that you sent me. I still think that you are jumping the gun by feeling you've been 'ripped' as the package I sent you did arrive with extra things in it, unfortunately the main item you wanted was not there. As it happens I am going to the source of old stuff today. Stand by your mailbox. Get the binoculars ready and if your mailman is wearing Vans grab the package before he opens it for ya!

OH! .....And I'm also the guy who sent many sets of rubber backed washers to the 'States, some purple Seismic springs to LA, even a set of Strokers (used and abused)...money for Sharon Sidlo's trip...the list goes on. So one tailbone goes astray. You got the magazine and the stickers that I threw in as a nice gesture, that should have given you some idea how I like to treat people, but you make the inuendo that I didnt even put the Tailbone in there in the first place, you'll recall that I said It was used and I only had two of the screws.... But you seem to want to hold me responsible for some mail guy (customs?) ripping open a package? I think it might have been nicer of you to tell me you had sourced the tailbones elsewhere. I thought I was doing you a fovour.

I sent you a tailbone, some stickers and a magazine, only to be told that it had fallen out of the packaging. Guess thats one of the risks you take. So I said I would send him another one at my cost. I know a place that has new ones, old stock. I dont pass the place every day as it is 150 miles away.
Buddur has my e-mail address. I sponsor the link on Europe forum and he can phone me if he likes.
I'll trust you that your telling the truth about the packaging, but frankly I am a little p~~~ed at your tone.

Hey,Hugh,just a thought.. Could you toss your findings(or a link to them) up on www.freecarve.com ? I think the snowboarders there would appreciate the info on crosstrainers. I mention this as it's finally warm enough here to Skateboard again! We had 3-1/2 weeks of temps only in the upper 30's with frequent snow squalls,but yesterday finally had a touch of Indian Summer with 58* weather. Now I just gotta find a road that dosen't have salt/sand all over it...

I just posted this on another forum topic, but since the most recent post mentioned an admirable man, Steve from AZ, I think this post shoud also be posted here (for more than one reason)...
A few months ago I posted about acquiring new or used tailbones for a new deck, from which I got 2 replies via Email. One said he had a used one that he'd be glad to trade for old/unique sk8 stickers. So I dug up a bunch of my old stickers and sent them out. Well, when his package arrived the end was all ripped up...the package was hand-made from a brown paper gracerybag-like material (flimsy). Anywho, inside was a complimentary copy of Longboarder Mag and some stickers...but no tailbone.
I Emailed the dood about it and he said Customs (this person is from England) must've been looking for drugs, and he said he has a line from which he will get and send me a new one "but it may take a week". Well, it's been 1.5 months since then and I just Emailed him a week ago about it but haven't heard a thing.
Having been under the impression he would go out of his way to spend $$$ to get me a new one (the one he sent was used and to him free) I got another buttload of stickers from a friend in Michigan which I was going to send that dood for his honor and thoughtfullness of keeping his word regarding our trade (this dood owns a sk8shop even).
But nooooooooooooooooooooo! Why do I get the feeling I won't ever hear from him?
On a better note, I would like to gratefully thank Steve From AZ for his kindness by going out of his way and hooking me up with the Tailbones I so desired for my new deck. Kudos man!!!

Well, I want to retract my initial disgust with Crooks rails. After conversing with Jesse @ Crooks via e-mail, I gave it a good hard thinking and decided that I was being too hard on them. Even more than any other skate gear, plastics like rails and tail guards get abused the most. And, if I'm out sliding rebar-laden parking blocks all day long, I shouldn't expect my rails to last forever. Of course they'll wear down eventually. And that's why they are replaceable and not built in. Jesse was cool enough to point this all out to me and THEN offer to replace the rails for free. Umm, thanks but, I'll just buy another set so that my money goes where my mouth is and I end up supporting them instead of leeching off of them. Hey Jesse, thanks for the offer and the e-chat. Crooks rails rock! Brad Edwards and the rest of the team ride them for a reason. I was just being cranky, that's all, I apologize. Buy some Crooks rails and be thankful that rails for longboards even exist! And I've been told the sex bolts are optional for those of us who don't like the wood screws. Awesome!

I did not mean to flame you and if you took it that way then my bad. What I am saying is just don't use the name "Indo Board" and ask for the exact dimensions. Or at least don’t make it so obvious. I would have never posted had you said, "Does anyone have the specs for a good balance board".
In my opinion, it is not right to blatantly take somebody else’s hard work and copy it exactly. Show some respect to the guys that go out of their way to build good equipment otherwise all you are going to get out of the skateboard industry is the same old crappy cookie cutter equipment by the big boys.

Julius,keep on making your own stuff! Just be aware that the Ol' BongoBoard idea has been around long enough that it now has three companies making variants of the original,but with certain tweaks for added performance.I happen to be very partial to Vew-Do,but then again,they're made right down the road from me by a highly respected former Snowboard instructor. Bru has it dialed,and even makes Longboard Balanceboards. Funnest thing for me personally wasn't trying for spiffed tricks,but rather riding one with two other objectives in mind;1st,play Cricket with Darts;Do this while holding your beer(no spillage allowed!)in a cup/mug. Totally redefines what your balance is like! I got whomped,game-wise,but had a great time with it! As for the homemade ride,see if you can't figure out how to get it set-up so you can 'walk-the-dog' down the street.That has always blown me away to watch,at least as much as seeing some of the Boyz pulling Ollie Impossibles and landing back on the 'rock'. Even if all you get outa it is spins and disaster-rock+rolls,riding a balanceboard will improve your other riding skills,and,hey it beats flippin' channels on a rainy day...

Am i hurting some kid for building my own board? Im not out there trying to start my own company and patenting my own indo board...I was in this board to ask for help...maybe i posted on the wrong board for asking how to make my own...like i said before...maybe we should support skateboarding by buying from companies...it sounds like the only way skateboarding can advance is by supporting the companies that already exists accoring to you...do you really feel that way? Is it really wrong for me to build my own indo board? Is it wrong for the posters and readers of home made boards forum to build their own boards? Are they hurting the workers of the companies at comet? g&s? birdhouse? flexdex?
Please entertain me...cause i never meant my post to be flamed upon.

Julius, you asked if I agree with you and I do not. Hunter did invent the “Indo Board”. It is his version of a balance board. I didn’t say he invented the balance board. If you want to make your own balance board, balance trainer, ankle healer, or what ever you want to call it; then that is cool. But if you say you want to make a (insert a brand name board) replica then it is not cool. It appears that you are ripping off the board maker. Sometimes “getting over the system” just isn’t right. Not to say I am a fan of Corporate America because I am not. Though, Indo Boards is hardly a big bad company. Oh and I also was once a starving student so I understand your need to keep it cheap but not at the expense of others.

I made my Indo board...it cost me $15...thats $85 less than the *REAL* Indo board...and that guy didnt invent the damn indo board...balance trainers have been around for a very long time...I recall a product called bongo boards (an all wood construction) and as for supporting a company...Im a college student that doesnt have much money...Im sorry for trying to get around the system.
Also if we need to support the whole skateboarding industry by buying overly priced products from big companies...ask the webmaster of this site to delete the whole homemade boards message board...dont you agree?

Day 3 went real well... I am waiting to get the review forms back from the riders... I just jammed one of them up right now (actually it's their dad I jammed)
Freebord sent down a very cool guy as did Carveboard... I am also waiting on some super 8 helmet cam footage and such to turn into web vids.
My fav of that paticular day was the carveboard... set up properly (right flex and tire pressure) and on a steep enough hill, and it was a blast!
Watching the freebord rider rip was amazing too... if I could ride like that... then I would! Only thing is, is that he crashed a lot too! But he did get really close to 40mph on a few of our hills... which is only 10 or 15% slower than the speedboarders where hitting. He was pulling major high speed slides (using some homemade sliding goves he brought with him)
I have been slow on web updating lately... I'll continue the jam sessions until I get all my info back and then I'll post it up.
We are going to try and do our final ride day this sunday if the weather permits... only rained here a dozen times in the past 5 years, and it seems to pick days that matter!
It's been a real eye opener for me... I have always liked the flowlabs (easy to ride) and I like the new ones even better... I still don't care much for the freebords (but many of the guys do... they don't mind falling to learn... I heal slow now that I'm old!) The tierney rides was very cool also... different than the proto I tried a few years ago... also capable of wobble free speeds in the 30's. The carveboard was very surf board like... super deep cuts... nice flow... bitchen soulful rider.
