I`m with the protection theory. Maybe not so needed for the way we old farts skate but those that do a lot of flippin of their decks probably assume a fair amount of whacks on the top of their foot.
Ankle pads....two pairs of old socks cut to tubes and duct tape....about $.50
No swollen ankles......priceless

hugh, i can't stand pain either,
some recently saftey stuff i found useful for park riding,
1) ankle supports with spenco padding around the joints, protect you ankle bones from board whacks. (sportsmart)
2) salomon wrist guard - sort of like a slider glove, does not limit wrist movement like regular wrist guards. (word is they sell them at SOH in SF)
3) baseball slider shorts - double layered lycra at the hip, slice a slit open and insert some high density foam pads, $20 for a pair. (sportsmart)

Most of the Vans that I have bought in the past few years have had the padded tongues... for my old dogs, they are far more comfortable than the old skinny style.
I have never had a problem with them flying off my feet... but I tie my laces... HR

Puffy tongues help prevent pain when your board hits your foot. makes sense doesn't it? like pads! --> padded tongues!
Of course puffytongues are for sissies and whimps and of course I would NEVER ever wear shoes like that! NEVER!
To hell with all padding! Long live PAIN!

If you have a longboard with a pointy nose that is prone to being bashed up in crashes or anything then... it's best to get some of them high density rubber guards that you place on the corners of shelving to stop little kids from running into em and puncturing their eye... all u gotta do is glue gun it to the nose... and... it also looks pretty snazzy. But with the nose guards... depending on the sharpness of the nose... u'll have to cut the center to make it more pliable... also... u could just get a nose guard for a surfboard from a surf shop...

i thought the hip hop guys started this trend....
john, you can add extra style points by leaving the laces loose. Don't attempt bowtie your laces, this will 'depuff' those tongues, making you look uncool.
Also kids have told me that you can kickflip better by not having your laces tied down, but there is a good chance that your shoes might go flying.
John, next time at vans, i will show you how to run your pants saggy to expose the proper amount of boxer shorts.

most of todays skate shoes have the tougue of yesterdays running shoes cause they are yesterdays running shoes....
with the huuuuuge rise in skateboarding there has also been quite a rise in shoe demand.... soo, what do large shoe manufacturers do???? put their old tennis and basketball designs back in service, give 'em to a few paid pros and voila!!!
i'm not saying this goes for all shoes, some company's realy design good stuff... but most are out for the quick buck.

I have asked all the kids and people working at the
skatepark but nobody knows! it's a mystery.
protection I assume, but from what? droped soda cans?
don't your feet shift around in there because the tongue
padding let's them move? isn't that padding kinda hot?
doesn't seem necessary for comfort. I don't get it.
but every single shoe has it!
can somebody explain the reasoning behind it? thanks.

I have no matter where I was found places to skate,
be it indoor or outdoor, I guess I've never been in the snow with a skateboard, But I'll place in a bet my favourite pair of boxers and my lucky dreadlock that there is an indoor parking lot nearby that you could skateboard in, or a high rise building with a rad bunch of corners winding down it or something to skate down.
But that wasn't really my point, my point was that those block things are useless and all you need is a set of frozen bearings and you have the exact equivalent and that this is just a quick fix for a fool and his money to get rid of each other.

this is definatly the worst thing in world EVER to EVER hit the market EVER.
all you need is blocks of wood and an 8mm drill bit with a drill on the other end(and THAT would not be worth the time spent tightening the bolts on your trucks).
here are some more options.
instead of becoming the best carpet ollier alive go out and SKATEBOARD.
put glue in your new ceramix-lighter ollie blox(ollie higher on the carpet than ever before)
you could always hurt yourself whenever you even thought of beggining to think of purchasing such a scam.
because you needed to practise ollieing on the carpet because it was raining outside you could practise outside till your bearings froze and tada(you get to get wet AND get the exact equivelant of FREE ollie blox)
I like the handle idea
you could scratch your head trying to figure out the message I am trying to get accross here(I figure if you bought into the ollie hoax you wouldn't have the brainpower to see what I was saying to you)
you could tighten your wheels without spacers or speedrings and see if that makes you better carpet ollier.
you could be like that chris chaput fellow and just never ollie(jeepers, if I NEED ollie blox and a carpet to learn to ollie...)
you could ...(oooh I love this one) take your wheels off and tada free ollie blox(latest version lighter with extra pop)
I could always tell a pretty clued up skateboarder that he is a know it all and that in order to learn to ollie on a skateboard higher you need to stop moving and take off two of the three main components in skateboarding wheels and trucks.
It's like telling me to become a good surfer I must stay in my pool and bounce around on a plank that doesn't move or turn.

go down to the nearest laminating shop and ask em to run some of their thickest laminate through the machine tilll it is perfectly clear and then rip off your old visor pull out the pencil and get tracing. tape it on with electrical tape. total cost. about a dollar max.

rj, try steve pearl at wildfro.com, he might have your shields.
i gonna get an azonic azx to replace my current vigor bmx helmet. The azonic is one of the few bmx/mt bike helmets that have a small chin guard that is practical for buttboarding.

I am looking for a good full face helmet that is pretty aerodynamic. I have a bell wedge helmet but i don't like the face sheild. I tried landluge but they don't sell the after market sheilds anymore. Anyone know where i can get a sheild or a new helmet? Thanks
