Bushnell Speedster Radar

Just picked one of these units up. They are fairly new and becoming popular with baseball coaches (inluding majors) for tracking pitching. It is real K band radar in a battery powered unit. This thing picks up just about anything. It should work great for determining speeds of skaters / lugers, we'll find out when I go to Pittsburgh for the skatecar race, and also when GSI opens the racing season. But for now I've tried it on cars. Said to be accurate to 1 mph. You can gauge your own speed if you have the balls to hold it while skating, and you shoot something not moving. I'll try it out a little more when our ever-snow-covered streets dry out. Should be great for determining the best gear for a particular hill.

david- I've only gone like 19mph down Park...but I'm sure longboarders would go faster, cuz I'm sliding to scub speed when I make that run
I get The Fear at about 20MPH, I got in a nasty wreck last fall at about that speed. Stitches in my face and stuff. Now I've got a bit of a speed phobia :(
Trying to work my way thru/past it...working thru your fear seems to be half the thrill of downhill

I've got a gravity speedo and the thing works great when calibrated properly. I too was surprised at how fast 25 mph was at first.Then I got used to 30, 35 and have even topped 40 a few times - mind you these speeds are all basically straight line bombing. When you start throwing in corners or cones 25 is pretty damn fast

Hey Ratty... pretty funny stuff about real speeds huh? Happened to just about everyone of us whoever started to use GPS units to tell how fast we're REALLY going!
I haven't seen the unit that your using, but I will be going by Walmart to check them out... sound pretty cool. I have found GPS units to be very accurate (within a couple of tenths at any given speed I have checked them against "corrected" units)

Bought a Timex Speed/Distance System, which is a GPS based speedometer/odometer. I'm using it to measure speeds while snowboarding, freebording, and riding/modifying gopeds. It measures current speed, average speed max speed and distance (and it measures pace for runners). It consists of a watch (which displays the data) and a GPS unit which straps to your arm or belt. Data is passed from GPS unit to watch via radio transmission (3 ft max range).
So far I've tried it on sunny days, cloudy days, and under the cover of trees in the Presidio. The GPS link doesn't seem to do so well among skyscrapers... when I was testing it in the SF financial district it lost link with the GPS satellites and gave me erroneous data. It doesn't seem to work well indoors (not suprisingly). It worked fine in the forest on Park Blvd in SF's Presidio. Doesn't work in MUNI busses, doesn't like being surrounded by metal.
I gotta say that according to this thing I'm not going as fast as I thought I was.... my top speed so far has been 23.6 MPH going down Teresita Blvd on Mt Davidson in SF. I used to brag I was doing 30 :/ LOL
I'm not much of a skater (got into downhill on concrete on a freebord last year only after falling in love with downhilling on snowboards), so I've never tried those magnet-based speedometers cause they wont work on my snowboard. I'm not sure whether the Timex is more or less accurate than those systems, and dont personally care since it wont work on my snowboard.
Anyway, i've been loving my this new toy. If anyone knows anything bad about this product tell me cause I only have 1 more week to return it. Thought you all might be interested...and that I might contribute something to this site instead of just gleaning downhill ride locations from y'all.
PS dont pay full price for this item, I got mine at Walmart for almost 1/2 off MSRP.

How could I forget??? It reigns right there w/ the easy solution to cutting out the tops of soccer cones!!! (involved something like ..uh,a 1" sharpened pipe/a hammer, and I think...your mom's new ceramic tiled kitchen floor!!!!

If you want to save money, you can always hurl that deck into the wall and call it art."

easiest way is picture nail in the wall, loop fishing nylon through the top 2 truck drillings, tie at back, hang on picture nail ....... invisible from the front and no board damage .... sorted.

The first of the two Roarokit kits is done! All in all this was an eye opening experience for me... vacuum bagging with this kit was quite simple and effective... the materials are high quality and reusable... the bag and pump should last for many more decks.
Pressing the decks onto a styro form worked very well and the plys used were a very nice maple veneer.
The building kit is very complete... all I needed to add was the grip, mounting hardware, and trucks/wheels.
Great parent/child project and clean enough to do indoors at the kitchen table if necessary.

I am lucky enough to have seen some proto-pics of this contraption. I must say, I had heard rumors about an adjustable wedge, but even this math nerd couldn't figure out exactly how it would be done until I saw the pics. PURE GENIUS! I plan on getting myself a few sets at least. Keep your eye out for these, it's the ultimate example of artistic engineering, and that's when you know when you're on the right track, when you can't tell if it's art or science, and have to call it both. There's good things brewing up at SlideGear, mark my word.

i dislike carrying skateboards around. short boards have the advantage here for being small and light, long boards are a pain in the butt to carry, i never carry mine, i just tow them around by the tail. (can't do this with double kicks)
did anyone see the 300th simpson episode?

Got the final steps done and all is good... did the hand rasping and sanding last night... I'll be spraying some clear laquer on it (hopefully tonight, and then in a day or so gripping it and mounting up some trucks/wheels.
I learned a few things about vacuum bagging on this project and had a real nice time building it with my kid... more to come, and then the longboard kit... HR

it seems that the bucket is the problem. With a flat section you could possibly aangle your foot. Then again, if it has some sort of snakeboard style turning up front, heel and toe may not be important.
What about a folding platform with conventional equip?

why would you possibly want your front foot parallel with the board..that must feel so uncomfortable.
the fact that it fold down must make it worse. looks like if you acually tryed any seroius skating with it, it would fall apart but then again that thing does'nt look like its made for serious skating.

"The most awkward part was the fact that your front foot has to be basically facing forward all the time. This feels especially awkward the first time you do a backside carve. Although it wasn't natural, it didn't prevent normal riding and like anything, after awhile, you get used to it. "
who rides a skateboard with front foot facing forword at all times? why is the front foot sitting in an encased basket?
this thing is an accident waiting to happen.

If your not looking to make a fashion statement and you want to keep the costs down...
consider using those metal strips with all the notches in them... the ones that are for cheap shelving... buy the long hangers (I think you can get 10" or 12")... they stick into the notches in the metal strips. Strips mount to wall with whatever type of anchor you need to use.
You can duct tape socks or cloth or whatever onto the hangers to keep them from scratching your boards... HR
