Making UHMW stick

Problems gluing Velcro to your slider UHMW material ? This method will help. Nothing sticks well to UHMW because it is chemical-resistant, and has very low surface energy (low polarity). But this can be changed. Cut the shape you want, and sand the surface to be bonded with medium-fine sandpaper, 150 or 220 range. Wipe surface with clean, oil-free solvent such as toluene or laquer thinner (no Varsol, kerosine, etc). Let dry. Go outside if you aren't already and ight up a torch. Propane or Mapp, not oxy-acetylene. Run the torch quickly over the surface, a few times, so as to heat very rapidly but not melt. Those who have produced the perfect browning on a souffle or merangue will have it down pat. This "flame treatment" will produce hydroxyl groups, and a few other assorted polar groups. Wipe again with solvent. You now have a surface with several times the original surface energy, which will bond to heavy duty Velcro adhesive with a very good result. You can see how you did by using a drop of water. Originally, the water will bead up as if on fresh wax (which it is, essentially). After, the water droplet will spread like it does on tired paint. Try it, you'll like it.

I try to avoid Home Depot or other big box hardware stores. The quality is always low and I don't like how they tend to drive the good ol' Mom-n-Pop stores out of business. I'll give my business to the little old guy who's spent his life in hardware any day rather than some pimply kid in an orange smock who doesn't know the difference between grade 8 and stainless steel.

My plan is to find the material that is close to 1" thick. I would then counter sink 4 holes so I can use 1/2 machine screws with oversized finish washers on the palm side and then attach to a leather glove with shoo goo.
That should give me about a 1/4" wear until another puck will need to be put on.
With very little hills, and my weight of 160#, it should last a while.
Also, I might knotch out an area so I can wear a wrist brace.

UHMW will be the best, it combines low friction and low wear. Lots of guys who aren't impressed are using cutting board plastic, etc which is not UHMW. Nylon will work fairly well but some surfaces may tear out little chunks. It is possible for nylon to fracture bust not likely. PP and teflon will be poor materials. You cannot securely glue UHMW, some will disagree but if it gets cold, the "good" glue job may suddenly fail. Ask me why the sliders I have in the car right now are missing a puck.

I see all kinds of materials from nylon, tp polypropylene, the teflon.
Is the UHMW the most preferred or will the other stuff work?

I have a couple pieces of black 3+" by 1/4" thick by 3 feet or so. I also have more of the red tubing (lots), and a couple 3' pieces of "Tracker black TK-051" bushing stock, also known as 1" diameter 75A neoprene, with a convenient hole in the center. Offers considered. The black UHMW is good for sliders, I've melt-bent some of it to make sort of a slider-wrist brace combo, that straps around my wrist with velcro straps. It would make good rails or tail blocks, too. I also have somewhere in the neighborhood of 2 million Legos in the shop, but that is another matter

LMK if you've got any extra chunks of UHMW you're not gonna use; small or large, it doesn't matter.
I still have a chunk of the magic red nylon tubing used to make Duane D's killer Tracker Small Pivot Bushings if anyone wants it. I'm experimenting with a larger blue nylon tubing with larger pivot trucks.

We use UHMW in many places in our brewery, and from my experience the pigmented green pieces we have hold up equally as well as the natural uhmw, it just costs more..

Geezer: What's been your experience with pigmented UHMW? Do you know if the pigment has an adverse effect on wear as in other plastics? I only use the natural UHMW in my profession because we are more concerned with cost than beauty. Professional Plastics in Phoenix, AZ is fairly economical for custom work if you're dealing in any kind of volume. This is providing that you only have them do right angle cuts. If you have them doing curves they'll rape you. What is the final piece that you guys are making? I might have some insight.

Marine Board is usualy not UHMW, but rather extruded high density polyethylene. it will wear about 5x faster than ral UHMW

There's a number of places which deal in scrap and cut-off materials (Aluminum, Delrin, stainless, Teflon, etc.)which sell blue UHMW as "Marine board". Google Marine board scrap and you should be able to score loads cheap. eBay is also great. I'm building some prototype instruments and needed chunks of Teflon, which is hideously expensive, and I bought $750 worth on eBay for $130. That's a savings of $620, which by my reasoning can be applied to skateboarding related purchases...

Steven: I have a tough time listening to Agent Orange since they were here several years ago and were preaching from the stage how much they hate punks. A lot of their stuff is old Dick Dale music, anyway. I don't see him in my face telling me how much he hates me after I lay out cash to hear his music. (He has been touring recently.) Even if he is an old codger he is a serious part of the surfing community and I would lay out cash for his music over Agent Orange any day.
