My computer is now up and running. Happy Birthday to Judy Oyama, belated, Happy Birthday to one of my Idols, Hackett. Wish I had the extra cash to race you and others at your bash. Happy Birthday to you Rickey. Everytime a year goes by, we earn the new number, we're still alive. Enjoy it while your here. Look at the good side of life and let the bad go.

Dan,

Thanks for the information regarding Dale's coaching of El Gato. Coaches can be a very important part of the learning process.

Elguera etc.

Cliff, I'm shadowing you everywhere you go on this site!

Let's not forget that it was Dale "Sausage Man" Smith (1970s freestyle legend and leading collector of skateboard memorabilia) who first worked out the mechanics of moves like the frontside rock-n-roll and frontside invert and then coached Elguera into mastering them.

Great triv, Cliff! Here's another question, and I don't know the answer. Who is credited with the first frontside rock and rolls? (a far more insane trick, imho.)

Tim Marting
On 10/23/2004 Miko wrote in from United States  (66.81.nnn.nnn)

Cliff, was Tim Martin part of the Alot-A-Flex gang? I remember running into them at a couple pools and some races and they were a kick-butt crew. Where are they now?

Rock and Roll
On 10/20/2004 Cliff Coleman wrote in from United States  (68.127.nnn.nnn)

Hello Joe,

Tim Marting has been credited with inventing the Rock and Roll. Tim was the first to showcase the trick at one of the Hester series events. Tim is a great guy and never said he invented the trick. It was actually invented by a skater who I think went by the name of Justin. Sorry, but I don't know his last name. This is a trick from the 70s. Justin was trying to do successful Rock and Rolls at Rohnert Park skate park on a day that Tim Marting, myself and other friends went there to skate. Justin could do one or two out of the fifty plus he was trying. A few minutes later, Tim Marting had the trick wired and was pulling off Rock and Rolls time after time, effortlessly. Tim got the credit, but it was this other guy Justin who had the creative idea.

True story,
Cliff Coleman

I spent my 51st this year at Breck on sunday racing ts in the pro class for a 16th and remember having one killer run against Barker that really made my day. Happy birthday bro! BLR... the true soul of slalom racing! (Among many soulful brothas and sistas)

Thanks Rene!
On 10/15/2004 Cliff Coleman wrote in from United States  (68.127.nnn.nnn)

Rene,

You have been waiting for the day when you could race and BEAT me in slalom. You did it in the tight slalom. Congrats for your effort! You practice and it has made a huge difference in your racing. Thanks also for the photos and cartoons that you post for all of us. The greatest skater of the 60s in my opinion, Rudy Esquer, 1965 Northern California Skateboard Champion, is also very talented as a cartoonist. He worked with Charles Schultz for years and also with the creator of "Wee Pals" the first integrated, sindicated strip. He now lives in Maui. He, myself and two others that skated together in 1963 have a reunion about once a year.

You are a class act, as are all of the Carrascos!
