I'll be heading coming out to this area (staying in Fairfax)for two or three weeks over this summer, from Sheffield, England. What's the scene like in this area, and any good riding spots to check out? Mainly after DH and sliding I reckon, and It'd be great to try and hook up with some people who know the area.

Hey Northern Va People
On 3/3/2005 Ben wrote in from United States  (159.230.nnn.nnn)

Hey i am suprised to see anyone post from Va. I know plenty of spot and really am trying hard to meet other people in the state that skate. I am located in central VA but my friends and i travel around alot to skate new spots. We are actually going to a gathering at Fountain Head this weekend in Northern Va. It is saturday around mid day. If you read this in time try and make it. I believe it is fountain head national park or something like that. Any VA speedboarders, sliders, longboarders post back and lets start getting some skate sesions together. Keep skating va and post back.

On 2/27/2005 alleycat wrote in from United States  (68.49.nnn.nnn)

Hey Daryl, top speeds are in the low 40's. It's the tight left at the bottom crossing a bridge that will make you pay attention. You don't want to come off your board because the bridge guardrail is adhered to very thick posts and there won't be any haybales. If you're lucky enough to avoid the posts, you'll end up 30 feet down in the water. We'll be a loooooong way from any help, so we have to be careful. Looking forward to riding with everybody and don't forget about the GSL fundraiser that night!

There are tons of hills in the NoVA/DC area. There's a downhill session @ Fountainhead Park on the 5th of March. There is a hill on the backside that's pretty suicidal but doable.
Bring your nuts.

Anyone know of any nice hills within a couple of hours of NYC? I'm trying to put together a downhill speed photo shoot in the next few months for a magazine when weather is good. Thinking foothills of Poconos / Catskills / Adirondacks... Thanks.

HEy man, whats up....can't help you with you hill search but iff you can make it to salem on saterday earl am, you can probably catch a ride with a few of my bros coming up from salem. Im comin down from seattle with some people and we are meeting at maryhill, if you don't know of it it is a world renown hill. +3.5miles of butter smooth pavment. you can bomb it fas or carve it up slow.. 22 turns in that 3.5miles. if you go to the speedboarding section of this site there is a video link of the hill. it is the mecca for longboarders up north if not all around. oh and one other thing its closed to traffic, because its a historic site thats open to the public.

heres a pic you can see the road in the back ground. only a small section but very good represntation of the whole thing. located in Goldendale, Washington

enjoy

Albert and the cops
On 1/24/2005 Mark Johnson wrote in from United States  (68.123.nnn.nnn)

Hay Albert Mark again
Elementary schools are known for new schoolers tearing up the campus and destroying any thing in sight. That’s a good chance why you got hassled by the Man
we have good luck with the SJ PD, we were sliding down this hella steep road in SJ when a cop pulled up, he pulled in front of us and saw us all do slides with control and slow down, he saw us and just kept rolling, this is the second time on this road that a sj Pd just went on by and let us keep skating, We have gotten the Ok from hiway patrol to street luge the back side of hiway 9, we also have had are local Ranger pull up at are slalom hill and check it out, Turns out he sk8's and has a long board himself, Next time you see a cop just show him your board and explain you are not there to sk8 and destroy just to carve and have a good time,Chances are you are older and wiser than the cop, also there is power in numbers, come out and sk8 with us, even if we do get busted there is always some were else to sk8.

FALTOWN SKATEBOARDS IN SAN FRANCISCO
On 1/17/2005 alex wrote in from United Kingdom  (81.6.nnn.nnn)

Yo yo, how’s it going every body, its Alex at Faltown skateboards,

I hope you are all suitably recovered from Christmas and New Year and are feeling fine!

Myself, Chris, Mark and Tom are all coming over to San Francisco and Berkley hills to Hook up with Cliff on the 20th to Skate and film the last section of our DVD. We will be in San Francisco for the first week and Berkley Hills for the second.

We haven’t booked any were to stay yet but I think for the first week we will be in the Green Turtle Backpackers I think it is in Fisherman’s Wharf. When we land and find it I’ll post the phone number up for any one that wants to get in contact with us.

We would like to hook up for a slide/skate/film with as many people as possible so if you fancy it send me a post on our website or this one or phone the hostel when I post the number.

I hope to see some of you soon

Best wishes

Alex

P.S. Cliff we couldn’t change the flights but hunts us out when you get back from Costa. I’ll post loads of contact numbers on forum so it shouldn’t too hard-I hope!!

cops on your tail
On 1/16/2005 peters wrote in from United States  (24.18.nnn.nnn)

Albert - those bike lanes should be legit but it depends how their original 'intended use' was codified - I just did a similar search for a local trail I've been wanting to use for a longboarding group event and turns out it is defined as any "non-motorized wheeled transportation" so that's pretty clear. Schoolgrounds / campuses typically no good -- they fall under the "fun until you get caught" clause. ;-) My experience is there's gonna be cool cops and those who hassle...its only if they are unjustifiably hassling where its really not cool.

You might want to do some digging... As Pat Chewning just recently posted in the skateboarding law forum, you can usually 'Google' some keywords and quickly find out your local laws on this...very effective. cheers - peters

Cops on my tail
On 1/16/2005 Albert wrote in from United States  (63.203.nnn.nnn)

I can't believe this I know cops are always out to get skaters. I was out longboarding at a local elementary school when all of a sudden a cop came out and told me that there are not skateboards allowed on campus. 10 mins later I came back I get stopped by cops all the time why in fact I go longboarding along the street bike lane and I still get stopped its insane and am sick of it so what I do is just ignore them and come back when they leave.
