Will & Ryan, good practice yesterday. Was it hot enough? Will, I can't beleive how fast you were going. Ryan, I guess you did kinda OK too.
Hey Joe, do the pro & open categories at Sandia carry through to all events? Will there be 2 divisions for the banked slalom, slalom challenge, cross town, etc?
Is Ryan going to quit sandbagging and race Pro?

Is everyone getting as excited as I am?
I'll be flying into ABQ @ 1:50p on Thursday and am looking for a ride. Will anyone be arriving then or later? I will gladly kick-down for gas or buy the first round.
Is this the proper location for All-Around s#!t-talkin?

Killer day out in the Jemez mountains Sunday July 30th. GI Joe came out, Will Brunson, Chris Miller, Evan Ricker, Chuppee and me, rippin all day. Lots of hills, lots of fun! No one got hurt, all in all a good time!
Then Tuesday August 1st Will, Seth and I went up to Sandia. Will and I rode it from top to bottom in the full on rain and fog. Killer session! That road is amazing, everyone should come out for the All Around Challenge.
Wednesday the 2nd, Seth and I wanted more. We road the SF Ski Basin road from top to bottom for the first time...once again, in the rain. The road is rough but we had a killer time anyway.
Downhillin in New Mexico is growing. Hit me up, let's go ride!

The North American Speedboarding Championships brought out 77 racers for 2 days of highly competitive racing under hot conditions along the Columbia River Gorge. The weekend of racing was rounded out with plenty of off site riding and ripping. Friday morning before our crew unloaded the straw onto the hill, we met up with some of the Ratz and were treated to a nearby hill that was a butter smooth drafting drag race for a couple of miles dropping down the Gorge to the river. It was so smooth it seemed that we weren’t even moving (near 50mph). At the bottom we were greeted by another dozen or so racers that had just dropped this fresh hill.
While we tried to arrange who would drive the next round and in which cars, I jokingly turned to a few skaters and said that back home in NM we would just start hitch hiking and usually get a ride in a pick up truck with out much wait. Right then a gigantic RV pulling a large boat pulled up and when asked if he was going to the top he replied “You can all fit in, jump on up!” Much to our relief we all locked the cars and no one had to drive. We sat on their bed, counters, sofas and stood in the aisle as the RV effortlessly climbed the hill. As we unloaded everyone thanked the vacationers and Ryan Ricker caught it all on tape. We then bombed down en masse to the delight of everyone, the RV folks cheering. This was a great start to an epic weekend.
710 bales of straw later, the hay crew was now hot and sweaty, but with a dozen helpers it went fairly quick, and by the end the rancher had some new friends and some of the first timers now were bucking hay like pros. Cowzer corner was thoroughly lined and re lined in anticipation, but it turned out that it was the final corner under the trees that took it’s toll in crashes. I counted 20 just on practice and qualifying. Then on race day, it was less as riders dialed it in. The afternoon was spent getting the U-Haul and last minute details, then off to ride Rowena Loops Rd and the Mosier Tunnels. See the new Concrete Wave mag for details on these super fun roads that you MUST hit if you’re in the area.
Rowena Loops has an overlook to view the Columbia River Gorge as well as the road below. We were treated to some extra excitement when a large group of DH racers passed a local Sheriff on his way up the hill. Ethan Lau from Hawaii was filming with a boom, no pads or helmet, and out of his lane, coming too close for the cop to look the other way. Lights, camera, action! He spun his rig around and chased the skaters down the hill with lights flashing and siren screaming. From our overlook at the top we could see skaters sliding, foot braking and jumping off the road and into the bushes. Red took a full on Superman dive off the road and across the gravel for about 50 feet. Again, Ryan caught the whole thing on video, and the excitement grew!
Turbo Tad hobbled over to his suburban and embarked on the ‘Rescue’ mission down the hill to see how many skaters he could pluck from the roadside while the cop held a few skaters midway down for a lengthy lecture. From the top we were yelling directions to help them find each other for evacuation, and in the rush a GPS unit was lost (later to be found). By the time the Sheriff let the few skaters go to go look for the rest Tad had already escaped with them over to Mosier. We made sure that all of our skate gear was in the car, so when he got to the top to ask us if we had skates we said “Yes, we do, but we’re not riding them”. He said he was still looking for 6 or 7 culprits and we explained that there were almost 100 skaters in town for the race at Maryhill, etc. etc. He tried to smooth over the tension by saying that he used to Inline Skate, but that now he gets his adrenaline rush by being a cop. Enough said! He did not cite anyone, though continued looking for the disappeared while we rode through the Mosier Tunnels. I hope Ethan got footage at the other end of this tale, I’d love to see the look on the cops face as he passed you guys!
Saturday morning racers we’re checked in at the gate receiving event shirts, stickers and being directed to the top where the food truck was cranking out breakfast. Tech inspection went very smooth as everyone knew what the requirements were and was ready to go. Thank You! A 20 minute riders meeting covered rules, questions, procedures, questions, format and more questions. Practice began and waves of racers flowed like ribbon down the hill until noon. I watched from the last corner as Brianne crashed hard and broke her collarbone putting her out for the weekend.
Qualifying began in a light to medium head wind. Many of the more experienced riders opted to wait until later in the afternoon in hopes that the winds would turn to tail winds (like last year), but they never did and may have even increased making for times that were very closely bunched. Some timing errors resulted in some riders getting a rebate and improving their times while others proved to be too weak in the legs to take a another run. At the end of the day it was Danny Connor with the fastest time of the day at 199.55 seconds. Derek Brown and Noah Sakamoto were good sports about their missed times, and TimeShip Racing will waive their entry fees at the next TSR race they attend.
Race Day had the same light to medium headwinds all day making for very close tactical heats. This also showed the value of doing timed qualifying runs to determine brackets which seed racers of like ability into meaningful heats. After the quarter finals we took a 1 hr lunch break before returning to racing. Benny Boyd took a crash to the impact rated helmet and needed to visit the Paramedics. He was spun, but was later released to his comrades. In the Semi finals for the A group Chris Chaput threw his shoulder out of socket with 2 monster pushes off the start line. As he kneeled on the road in front of us, the heat continued on down the hill. He looked like he was in terrible pain as he was helped to the tree to try and relocate it. Luckily only a few minutes passed and it went back in, but he was done for the day.
The finals for A and B Class were awesome, and the view from the top at Maryhill is unparalleled for racers and spectators alike. NOWHERE else can you see nearly the entire race course from one spot. As a racer you usually are eliminated and then you find a single spot to watch from the finish, or a fast corner. Watching each race with dozens of other screaming skaters is such a blast. Add to that Matt ‘Hoodie” Shaw turning our bracket boards into wagering tables with piles of cash held down with rocks and play by play commentary for each heat. “How about a tri-fecta?” I was laughing my head off. In the end it truly was a North American Championship with the Canadians dominating, the US representing many states, and lots of smiling first timers that I’m sure we’ll see again.
The awards were held at nearby Stonhenge which offers the perfect ritual place to hold an awards ceremony. This full size replica overlooks the Gorge and has excellent acoustics and a nice podium. Big thanks go out to K-Lee our Science Officer for timing and bracketing, and to Long Board Larry and his wife for working tireless hours both days. Check out all of Lauras’ great pics at http://www.longboardlarry.net/slideshows.html
Worst Crash……….Brianne Davies broken collarbone
Snell Award………..Benny Boyd fully cracked his head for a concussion
Criddle Award………Jeff Woodfine for running down the hillside to re-join his heat minus a corner or two.

Dead f#@!in Last…..Brian Nez for a sleepy qualifying run and going through the wrong side of the timing gates.
