if i may interject my experiences...june 1979 pebble mill studios in birmingham, a bunch of us from arrow skatepark and a few of the new skateopia "team" were appropriated by the BBC and indeed held a barrel jumping competition with "rules" made up by some old git from the Perry Barr athletics association, the barrels were the old wooden ones from Mitchell and Butlers brewery...we had an unlimited run up and the winner was an asian kid from handsworth called "bally" who cleared 8 barrels clean....i remember that the skateopia lads had nice clean new t shirts and we were immensely scruffy and we were kept out of shot most of the time, Tony Bastable (magpie) was there and some woman called Jenny who presented the thing. the whole prog aired for perhaps 5 minutes and we were there all morning in the rain, wet and cold.......we kept calling tony bastable tony bastard (as kids do) and he got the huff, we also met the grumbleweeds :) ( we only went because the Damned were supposed to be on) which was the high point of the whole thing really

Hey David, My old band Arab and the Suburban Turbans played all the local OC places, Our first gig was opening for El Groupo Sexo, we were a perfect compliment to there Sexofied funky thang, Safari Sams in HB was home for both bands, along with Fenders,Bogarts,Night Moves, Meadowlark and several other clubs of the day, Jason the lead singer found a home in the Porn industry, The Horn section was BAD!!!!!!! I cant remember the guys names but I thought they started a band after El Grupo. Do you remember in the early days of Sexo they did this song abouty Kareem Abdul Jabbar, it was fricken genius, the back up vocals were hilarious. What a great band they were.

We used to just set a board on its' side, as the jump-by board, and then measure from there and then just set the landing board in the properly measured spot. So, we weren't actually jumping over any obstacles. What's bugging me now is that I can't seem to recall the distances I was jumping. As a high jumper, I'm very certain of my personal best, but I just can't seem to recall my long jump marks. It seems to me I was jumping somewhere in between 14 and 15 feet. What I do remember about long jumping was it was all about getting as much speed as possible.

Cabbage,
I don't know where you got the flower pot idea? I did beat John O back in 77 in a long jump. We jumped over Slalom cones placed back to back. I don't know what distance we jumped. The foam sounds good to me also.

Who knows the whereabouts of El Groupo Sexo in the here and now; ie. 2003? These guys were the best band to come out of Orange County, Ca. by far. I found their Up Periscope album in my vinyl collection and was wondering if they did any more records. I am a drummer and was in a band called "IXTLAN" back in the late 80's. I got us booked at the Meadowlark golf course rec. club in Huntington Beach, CA and the horn section of El was sitting in with another band and these guys blazed. I also used to attend Bogarts in Long Beach regularly and showed up one night when El was appearing in the lounge room. They were playing School's Out and it totally blew me away. Any info on these guys and where they are now would be greatly appreciated. As an avid fan and believer in the preservation of live recorded music for historical purposes, I have been recording jam sessions, rehearsals, auditions and live gig performances of virtually every band I have ever been in since 1974 and would really be stoked if any given member of El recorded any of their gigs, rehearsals or left any studio cuts behind. My current band is called "LIQUID". www.thebandliquid.com. We are footprinting in the vein of the Grateful Dead and the jam band genre with traces of blues, jazz, rock and improvisational crescendos. If you are in the southern California basin please keep an eye open for us and see us live and stay in touch. We need the support for the present day status of the recording industry and major label execs are no longer interested in promoting and investing in concept bands but would rather invest in puberty rock with no substance or longevity prowess; someone with another pretty mannequin face to fabricate, manufacture and mold into a singer who is clueless about compositions and real art form music. Cheers and happiness to all. D.C.

Good luck with your efforts Cabbage, I'll try to get our event scrutinised by the UKSSA, so that we can get some sort of benchmark for you. This could be a fun challenge. The foam barrels I am using will actualy be rolled up 2" thick sheets of foam that would collapse easily. I will also use a plank for the jump board to hit in front of the barrels. The 3 jump things good too. From what I remeber it can lead to a lot of fun and a lot of spectators cheering the longer ones on. Also I think the whole board needs to cross the finish line, but perhaps it doesnt matter how long the board is, it could just be the riders choice. Sound like simple fun, but with an edge. I'll keep you informed Cabbage.

cool, nice to hear this for an eyewitness. Right on Jack, was this a popular event? because you don't really hear many details of people that did it. After TA jumped 19 did it fade out, or did the birth of vertical kill it? also on a different note, nice to hear lil' jack's surgery went ok. Your the man, stay strong, words from a father with pain of his own. Your an inspiration..nuf said
was your footage ever put out? and how can someone like myself who is seriously thinking of trying to step up the current record see footage from that event? is it available somewhere?

I was at the Long Beach Arena when Alva set the record. I even have Super 8mm footage of this. The skaters could take as much run-up as they could handle. I think they were given three attempts at each distance, barrels were added one at a time. They started with either 10 or 12 barrels. The event rules were like that of a high jump or pole-vault competition. Three consecutive misses and your out. The control line after landing was around 10-15 feet.

Good point about instant acceleration, and i'd like to see a long as you dare run up. Luckily we will have a choice of boards. I think we might do High Jump too. Can't wait to see the videos, they go down really well over here, its inspiration for us. The "Sicknote Session" has taken off like a Rocket, who would have believed that a weekday, daytime session would be so popular. I guess thats why our economy is bad.

opps...I'm a freak, I'm on the damn bulletin board, funny, anyway
foam sounds good, Cliff told me those black plastic flower pots, that small trees come in, but your onto something with foam. I think ed's board would be good, but I have found that when flying through the air, when your feet stick the board, a heavier board is harder to get the instant momentium you need to make it 15 ft out. I might recomend something that would not tend to want to stay stationary when you land on it. A longboard for sure, but maybe not quite as big. remember this is just from my own knowledge.
next I think TA rolled in on a wooden roll in for speed. I'm not certain, hopefully, Arab can come through with his fact machine on this one... so I think if you are planning on pushing you might need more then 15ft, but, that is only if your going for the distance, you could have a start rule, but I think this event should be as fast as you dare to approach the 1st barrel, and the 15 rule rid awy is good..... Hope it turns out to be fun for you all. thanks for ridding Gravity, make sure you get some of our new videos.
i plan on attempting 19 at some point, I think to train for it, I'm going to the local hs track, and practice jump into the long jumping sand pits....
come on people let get longjumping a discipline of it own, more long jumper's need for discussion.....

Cabbage, Longjump...hmmmm, we are doing that event in Birmingham for a laugh, I am getting some foam barrels made. 1 foot circumferance, I'm not too sure on any 'Rules' so if you have any input please let me know. I'm think a 15"ft run up, and a 15 ft line after the last barrel that you must cross to count. We are thinking of using The Ed Economy deck as a landing platform, as we are using our Gravity stuff as prizes (we import Gravity with Oaklnad Imports) Any ideas and help let me know.

any longjumpers: just wanted to share notes and ideas. I'm interested in try'n to get something going. I have only done it a couple times, but with moderate speed, and no pads, jumped preaty far. I know 19 barrells. Can some of you guys that were there when TA did it, give me some advice, as to what type of barrells to use. I think Cliff told me they are like big plastic flower pots that you can get from a lanscaping place, I'm just wondering, when is one of these sk8 companies, gonna make barrells. Are they like 1 ft in diameter? so basicly is 19ft the world record that has stood since the 70's? wow, must be a little crazier then i envision......any thoughts?

Yeah, that was a pretty hectic weekend. With Hey Punk at the EMP and the Red Bull race downtown, not much time left for sightseeing. In the museum they have a good display of old school skateboards and skate music. There's a video with Olson, Duane Peters and some other guys, plus you can listen to interviews with riders. The website is kind of a pain in the ass to navigate, but there are pictures of the skateboards and other skate stuff.

Chris I was there in August with my son who rides for Deathbox Skateboards doing a demo at the Hey Punk festival, I was so wrapped up dealing with the demo that I didnt even get to experiance the museum, I was bummed to say the least! But EMP put on a killer event that made the trip worth the while, The architecture alone from the outside was unreal.

A man of many Champs!
Nice lot of guits A. But when the crunch is on those Marshalls must get some use eh?
Nice choice of vintage reish's too.
If I can't get ahold of a certain piece of gear I wing it too. But right now I have it all.
To be honest my fave piece of gear is a Peavy SVT60 in front of a Crate cab with 2 Celestion 35's and 2 JBL 50's. I mic the JBL on the bottom and hope for the best. Being a lumper you know what I'm sayin. The JBL's always sound so clean.
I almost never use Fender for Metal gigs, but for everything else it's all I use. Funny that eh?
To record I use my JCM800 50 watt for rythym and my boogie for lead. For "Just Die" [On the Unreal soundtrack}, I used a "Pod" from a maker I'm unfamiliar with.
To get this track email me and have 5.33 MB of space to deal with it.
Be the first on your block to have a piece of music others will pay for.

GBJ, Troll Doll, thats the Rude I know!!!!Tell him I said Hi! if you cross his path.
BoBo, I had my share of vintage guitars for years, Strats,Teles,Les Pauls,SG's.
Right now I have a 54 reissue Strat "Clapton Blackie", it had the V back neck that I couldnt stand so I took a belt sander to it and reshaoed it, It now feels like my favorite old Les Paul jr neck. Also have a 62 reissue Tele and Epiphone Les Paul, Wish I could afford the real thing but I just dont play enough anymore to warrent expensive guitars,
As for amps I collect Fender Super Champs, I have 5 of them, they were designed by Paul Rivera for Fender in 81-82, it was Fenders answer to Boogie, Its a 1x10 20 watt little beast with all the trimmings, I hook up 4 together and it sounds like a 59 Bassman on Viagra!
I borrow Marshalls if I need the goods!
Been to the Living Room many a times, always stayed at the Biltmore Downtown, Greasy Burgers from the Hanson bros mobile soup kitchen late at night after gigs, Prov is one of my favorite towns, Just far enough from NYC and far enough from boston, There used tobe a Killer Guitar store up the hill from the Capitol we used to buy stuff from?
I toured with the Ramones for 3 weeks, what a great bunch of regular Joes, Johnny knew more about baseball then anybody I have ever met in my life, I miss them dearly they changed my life forever.

I'm curious Arab, what method of destruction do you wield?
Seems like we each of us have some cool stories. I have more than I can relate by typing as I'm sure you guys do as well.
Currently I wield a 70's Gibson Explorer modded by me [I have teched as well]. My backup is a 71 Flying V with PAF's.
Amps are a Mesa Boogie Mark 3 and a Marshall JCM800 [50 watt]. Effects are a MXR EQ, Blue Tube overdrive, Digitech RP5, and a Morley Bad Horsie Wah.
I also have a 75 Fender Black Face Twin I pull out when I need a blues tone. Oh yeah, a 78 Strat [silver Aniv model].
I can play mad Dick Dale tunes with the reverb fully cranked. GBJ has heard me play. What was it you said Andy? "Guitar as a sport?"
Sounds like a skating reference to me!
Rock on.....

Cabbage, I had several bands throughout the years, Love Canal was a punk band that toured the western states, We had an album out and songs on a bunch of compilations, The singer of the band Kerry was in the Skoundrelz with Tony Alva, He quit that band and joined Love Canal, the earliest incarnation of Love Canal featured the original guitarest for Suicidal Tendencies singing before Kerry came in.
After that I did stints in some other bands, "Doggy Style" which had Brian Baker from Minor Threat,Dag Nasty now with Bad Religion in it, I replaced Brian but was by no means as good of player as he was.
Between all of that I had a band called "Arab and the Suburban Turbans" featured Nick Adams from MIA, Don Wrap from Plain Wrap, Ron Emory from TSOL, Bob Gnarly from Plain Wrap&No Crisis, UseGuy from Baltimore, and Rudy from Baltimore, and a bunch of other local luminaries.
Chuck Biscuits the former Drummer for, DOA,Black Flag,Circle Jerks,Danzig,Social Distortion and I started a band before he played with Danzig called the "FLOOR LORDS", Ron Emory was an early part of that band with us also.
My bands always sucked and I could make a living working for other bands, I have worked in several capacitys for a sh%tload of bands, from Promotor, Production/Tour/Stage manager to Sound man, Guitar Tech, Bass Tech etc.
I made a living on the road for the best part of 15 years, I've been in the business since 1979. today I'm a union stagehand and do everything from, Ballets, Broadway Musicals, Rock, Symphony, you name it I do live entertainment!
