Missed my chance to go to Falling Water, I'll see if I can go in the spring. Design classes are awesome. CMU is a longboard friendly campus, and girls are always curious about my longboard- "ohh Henry it's so big!" "Can I ride it" "What can you do with that thing?" etc. College rules.

Falling Waters is way coool! Been years since i've been there, I know they've been doin' lotsa work trying to save it, so definitely check it out while you can. The road into it would be a killer "in the woods, carvy road to skate" That F.L.W guy was way ahead of his time.

Lizzie,
Just missed the SAA crew 'cuz we mixed up cell phone and home phone and work phone numbers. I was so ready to bomb the mountain with them and knock out about 20 miles pushing. We were in contact through most of Virginia on the cell phones anyway. We got some cool publicity for them in the Harrisonburg, VA paper though - they made the front page (you should check out the link the guys posted on the SAA website). I'm trying to hook up with them on their way back west. They rocked. Everyone is real proud of them.

Henry,
I love you man. I hope CMHU is all you hope it to be. Please let me know when you are coming home for breaks and get to Falling Water before it falls down.

College is great, lots of parties at the frats and sooo many new faces. I have been working on spreading the love of slalom and longboarding by riding my Bozi around campus during orientation today... it turned some heads. It's 1 am... do you know where Ickboy is?

Webmaster Adam, Since last night, I have been unable to reload/refresh the Summary page that is stored in my browser’s history. If that is becauses of something you programmed into ncdsa.com, let me say that navigating this site is now much less intuitive for me because of it. Rather than reloading the part of the browser which has the Summary page to see if there are any new postings, I now have to bring up a new Summary page. That defeats my purpose of using the Summary page.

Tesi, The ABEC rating is how bearing companies rate their bearing tolerances. It is only important for people that use the bearings in machines. For skateboarding, the ABEC rating is irrelivent, as the bearings simply will never reach the speeds in which the ABEC rating will matter.
The number in the name of the truck usally means the width of the truck’s hanger (however, not for trucks made by the company called Independent AKA Indy). I personally feel that 180mm is too wide, unless you use center-set wheels (wheels which are the same no matter which way they are put on the axle AKA symmetrical). Flywheels and No-Schools are center-set. For use with end-set wheels (wheels of which the bearings are situated at the side of the wheel), 160mm or narrower will be more appropriate. Flashbacks and classic Kryptonics are end-set. If you compare Flywheels on 180mm trucks with Flashbacks on 150mm trucks, the setups will measure the same in width from the edge of one wheel to the edge of the other.
Harder wheels will be better on smoother surfaces and softer wheels will be better on rougher surfaces. The higher “a” number will be harder, the lower “a” number will be softer. A good compromise might be 84a.

So I receive this fancy 4-color mass mailed brochure at work from Seybold Seminars inviting me to a desktop publishing conference in San Francisco next month. The entire cover is a (stock) photo of a longboarder caught mid- kickturn on a steep SF street titled "Get to Work Creatively". There is a Solidskate.com sticker on the bottom of the board that I can't otherwise identify. Who is this rider?
A smaller version of this pic is on Seybold's web site: http://www.seybold365.com/sf2003/

doug, do you work for a company? I hav no idea what all those #'s mean!! Is there anyone that could explain to me all the parts of the longboards...I might as well buy a complete longboard, but i figured if i bought a sector 9 deck, they'd screw me with crappy trucks, wheels or smthg... =)

I'm 5'7" and weigh about 120-130. I have just been learning to do small hills (barely) and turns and stuff and learned a 180 on a longboard. I definitely want a Sector 9 longboard deck...several friends use Sector 9 and I know that they're good quality. Does anyone know about Sector 9's and the different shapes they come in? I learned on a Pintail but I want a rounded curved up tail to turn easier and do more tricks with.

tesi, heres some more information if you decide to put your own together:
Trucks: Randal R2 180s seem to be the standard for general use longboarding. I love them. I have also been using Tracker Sixtracks and although a completely different truck I like them as well.
Wheels: Kryptonics classic K 70mm diameter - 78a durometer Abec 11 70's Flashbacks 75a durometer
(durometer is the hardness of the urethane wheel. The lower the number the softer the material)
Bearings: Pleasure Tools sealed Abec 7's. Great bearings at a great price.

tesi,
What type of riding are you interested in doing and what is your height / weight?
These are some things that will narrow down your search. For example, you would use different boards to bomb hills than you would to compete at slalom.
I dont have any experience with sector 9 but from what I have read on this forum, I would not get a complete with their pivot trucks or their wheels. There are tons of bad reviews on this forum. It almost seems universal that the trucks and wheels are sub-standard quality and performance. I cant speak to the decks.
Also, get a copy of concrete wave magazine and read the ads. there are a lot of other companies out there you may want to check before going with sector 9.
