Whats up?
Recently my friend Andrew and I went longboarding down this road called Randolph. The road starts with a pretty flat stretch with a mild steepness, then turns sharply into a pretty steep very long hill. We call this steep hill Big Gulp.
Well the sun was shining the breeze was light, perfect day for some hard skating. Andrew and I reached the turn and headed for Big Gulp. Andrews boards trucks are farther apart than mine, which I assume makes him go faster. So he was beatng me as always, but I decided to race him. He followed my lead and we began bombing the hill. Like two jets.....swoooosh. The both of us were hitting thirty, maybe thirty five. Near end of the hill there is a 90 degree turn we usually turn into (Andrew went straight), probably as a result of being stoned I tried to make this turn at my high speed. I swerved to miss one pothole and swerved to miss he other and realized I was going straight for the curb. I was going to fast to make the turn and rather than bail into the soft grass I tried to complete it.
BAM! I hit the curb did a front flip, landed on the curb then slid into the street gutter and messed up my arm with like seven nine inch cuts in my right arm, some scratches near my right eye, I banged my shoulder which ripped my shirt, had scratches on my stomach, scrapped my right knee which ripped my pants, and messed up two of my toes cause I longboard in sandals. After crashing I picked myself up, surveyed my wounds and pulled out my crushed cigarettes. I lit one up got my board and check it for damage, it was fine, so I sat on the curb and enjoyed my cig. It took Andrew only about two minutes to get to me but when he did he looked shocked and said, "Are you alright?" and I just looked up and said, "That...Was...Awesome!" He laughed and said, "Only you would say that." Then Andrew walked and I limped home, it was a good day, I walked away with one more crash and my baby suffered no damage.

I think longboarding when it is windy could be a very good idea. Just a couple of days ago it became extreemly windy around my house so me and 2 of my friends went up to the top of the hill that we usualy do. The hill is not very steep or very long and at the end it has a slite up hill and then another downhill which on a non-windy day we could never make it up the short uphill. So we started by pushing as hard as we could. We started to gain speed when a gust of wind hit us from our backs. By the time we got to the bottom of the hill we were going soo fast if we had not have turned of wee would have launched over the next drop. I think it gives and added rush.

when i was first getting into downhill i had a 25in. 80s board with all Wal-Mart hardware. ( WD-40 on the bearings) and tackled the biggest hill in the neighborhood. got horrible speed wobble on the second try. i tried to jump off and just run down the rest of the hill. big mistake. first step i trip and try to tuck-and-roll. i get up and walk home only to find that I RIPPED MY UNDERWEAR! next time i'll wear Kevlar undies.

this is probably lame compared to the rest of the stories, and definitely stupid, but Had to share. I am just getting back into boarding after several years, and a couple years of snowboarding and blading. yeeeeeaaars ago, I was a little kid, who thought I was evil kanevil sp?, and I was fearless. I think I was around 8 or 9, and I had an okay, 80's fat board. I'd been riding for a couple of months, and lived in a flat area, so never really gone too fast. Seen "back to the future" and wanted to always skate behind bikes and cars, dogs, anything for speed and a rush. anyway, went to visit grandma in another state, and soon remembered all of the hills near her house. Immediately jump on my board, no pads, no helmet, shorts, cut off t-shirt and plastic sandals, started hauling ass and got a bad wobble. fell....... rad rash bfrom forehead to knees, all doen stomach. bad

Yeah, accidents suck. I will not go into details other than to say that everyone must (not should) wear a helmet. I binned hard and now the iris in my left eye will never work to open or close ever again.

Aight some of you folks may have never even seen snow but that white stuff saved my ass today. I was boarding down a pretty steep little section of hill thinking I would cut into a side street. As I round a realtively blind corner I see a car sitting on the wrongside of the road and I'm too far into the turn to get out but I cannot get around the damn car. I freeze up and hit the curb right on...Slid in the snow about 10 feet and continued to roll across the sidewalk. Not a scratch thanks to the curse of my longboarding...snow. :-) Not a very exciting story but I thought this board neeeded a little maine flavor.

A friend and I were cruising the local subs and came across an awesome hill. It was steep enough for us to hit about 35-40 after the chicane. We scoped it out for about 10 minutes in my car and decided to take a run. We got out and I put on my pads and helmet. When we started we were a little nervous, but we went at it anyway. My friend made the hill fine, only picking up some wobble at the bottom. I was on my Gravity with Randals. No wobbles, it was the ride of my life(only been riding for a month or so.) It was all fine and dandy until I got to the end of the "up-hill" that was supposed to stop us. My friend slowed enough to put his foot down and stop. But I had my PT Abec 7's in, he had only Abec 3's that came with his Sector 9. I got to the top of the hill and quickly realized that I was unable to stop, and the uphill was quickly becoming a huge downhill. my only other option was to cut a corner onto another side street. I was unable to make the corner and headed straight into a snowbank. I live in Michigan so this time of year the streets are clear but there is always a huge snowbank at the end of the road. I hit the bank going about 25mph still. When I hit the bank my board dug in about half the way, and I flew about 15 feet and did a flip and a half. landing on my neck and shoulders. luckily i had my helmety and elbow pads on, and i did not get hurt. but man what a rush. I would recomend that everybody crash at least twice. this was my 2nd time. it takes alot of fear out of riding big hills. plus the rush afterwards is great. next time I plan on filming the whole thing so i can watch and laugh. thanks

It's one of those things that everyone really fears... going down at 50mph plus, Myself and stuart where practising during the practise seshion, I was up against the first place qualifier and it was a complete psyche out sesh, I followed him through the top of the course and I knew that he was invincible through the shicane but If I wanted to catch him in this race I would need to go in almost full tuck through those bends, I basicly copied his whole stance and watched in horror as he wiped just ahead of me and I literally got myself stuck in the hay, my front outside wheel nicked the hay and I slammed... note not fell... SLAMMED, I went straight into the tar from my back and then moving onto my shoulder and then my head, A very hard slam on the noggin proved my helmet to be sufficient but man It felt like the worst dead leg of my life when I tried to stand up and My board was a good hundred meters up the road.... damn I fell hard, I can't even begin to stress how much pain my safety equipment saved me. People watching the opti screen said it was one of the more hectic wipes of the day, apparantly I fell and bounced a couple times and then slid a good hundred meters, It was a definate shocker for race day, it really sucks when you slam that hard, It was cool 5 minutes later adrenaline had blotted all pain away, till monday morning when I woke up with a shoulder that was as stiff as a board and an ass that hurt to sit on,
unfortunatly they put the speedo in the wrong place(apparantly it was 50 meters after the S bend) but we have clocked(into the shicane) speeds up 59mph by car so dude I'm hurting still three days later, whenever the pain kicks in again I think of the pass I made on chaput in the quarters and I can taste the red bull again. what a race!

I was skateboarding in my town of Ceadar Grove and me and some friends had a ramp at the end of this big hill. Me and my friends went down and we hit the jump going 10-15 mph. On my last time i wish i would not have gone down because i hit the jump and went flying forward iwasen't able to get my board back under me from a varial and hit the groung hard. I broke my left arm and right leg. i had road rash on my back and you can see my jaw bone. I was rushed to the hospital and had a succefull plastic surgery. Now i where leather and a helmet. it was a valuable lesson learned.

as for the mt. trashmore skatepark, nothin left of it. they took out the small halfpipe, which was the only thing left a few months ago. most times they had a chain on the flat of it anyhow. the transition was crazy, and the whole pipe was pretty beat up. not one of my favorite rides, and i've definitely lost some skin there. the snake run was probably gone before i was even born. i wish i could have ridden that.

Hey Mikey!
By using the jacket you were wearing for a sail, the wind was pushing you UPhill at 30mph? dang, that's a STRONG wind!
and Luke,
Mt. Trashmore used to have an asphalt snake run/skatepark. any remains of that there?

I had a nice tumble down my hill the other day. a true 25mph roll. my black leather jacket saved my back.
and I ALWAYS wear a helmet...

ok, first off longboarding when it's really windy can be a very bad idea. i'm riding a sector 9 super cruiser completely stock right now, but soon to be getting some randals because of some speed wobbles i got the other day when going up a hill actually!! it was a really windy day and i thought it'd be a great idea to use my coat as a sail, and well i got up to about 30mph give or take when my board started to wobble and by then it was to late to jump off so i was hoping to ride it out, but to no avail. a big gust of wind came and blew my off my board! i hit pretty hard and rolled a few times but luckily the jacket that made me wreck saved me from getting too scraped up. my board went about a quarter mile down the road and i came out with three small scrapes on my right side. let's just say i'll think twice before boarding when it's windy again.

in virginia beach, va, about the only hill we have is Mt. Trashmore, a landfill covered in grass. a pretty steep short run, definitely covered in ruts. one misty night i headed out with some friends, on our walmart specials (s#@!ty shortboards with 1" risers and big gushy rubber wheels, probably around 100mm-needless to say not the most stable equipment in the world, but modified with xtreme feet clips.) i took a couple runs, trading of my board to other kids, and then we switched to an unlit side of the mountain. my first run down, i trip up 3/4 of the way down, probably going 20 or so. i spread eagle into a mud pit, land mostly on my face but also pushing my shoulder back, resulting in a fracture and a separated muscle. i got up and laughed it off. the next day i wasn't laughing. wen't to the doctor, and i was pretty pissed. thank god for health insurance. was out of commission for about 2 months.

its mostly pavement for me these days.

They need to have some training/guidelines or something. it's ridiculous!

Snow time up here! Had a head cold last few days & antihistamines were a daily fix. Not sleeping well. My Bud's got new boards so I spend all morning chasing him. Finally he says, I'll follow you. So I turn up the gas, rock down a chute and just as I'm about to emerge onto a wide blue slope I see a drainage ditch like hollow sideways right in front of me! I extended down into it and contracted on other side...the up-slope lifted my legs as the G's compressed me down. I thought I was gonna really get something permanently bad! My Bud caught up with me and confirmed the red spots in the snow were mine. Nice run down...last for the day! I call 10 stitches in the chin easy considerring the possibilities!

p.s. - I had a helmet on...its buckle added a laceration to my neck & probably some swing weight to my head...my goggles ended up on top of the helmet...skis did not release as all force went down into sole plate. MAX

I have not been on this site for a very long time, looks like alot to be said for LUCK !!! I must have a lot of it because crashing is riding very hard and I do it alot !! Just got back from the death valley area trainning with a friend Danny C . We road his trainning hill , a right hand turn into a hard hairpin right into a hairpin left into a hairpin right into a hairpin left into a hairpin right into a hairpin left down a straight to the finish ! WOW!!!! 1ST RUN WHENT INTO THE 1TH LEFT AND CRASHED , GOT UP AND TRIED AGAIN AND CRASHED. Have not road for 4 weeks and it showed. Trucks where to tight and my mind was NOT in KLUDYVILLE. The last crash was bad ,I spin I turned and slide into , the rock of all rocks, that hurt. I did get the hill later in the day but the following day I ended up with a badly springed thumb , rebroke the knuckle on my other hand and broke skin on my back.I guess what I am saying is that I am a very , very lucky speedboarder that I hope will stay with me for a very long time ! I have crashed at 35 , 45 , 50 , and close to 60 mph and came out with just a little bit of nothing as far as hurt goes. The slower speeds seem to hurt more then the faster speeds.I always wear leathers , slidegloves and a great helmet.THAT COULD HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT !! I have hit hay face first at close to 50 mph broke my facesheild and lived to tell about it!WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
