Mercury: Yep. A went down on the pavement in a big slide. I was working on sliding with more speed on my 38" Think w/Indy's and Comet Game 90a slide wheels. I was specifically working on going toe side 180 into fakie out and straight into a heelside pedulum to straight. I ride regular footed and at the point that I was fully extended with both palms down, head up the hill, board and feet traveling in a slide down the hill, my right arm buckled at the elbow slamming down on my right elbow pad. This pitched on my side and I basically ended up sliding on my right hip for about 20 feet diagonally across and down the road until the curb brought me to a stop. My board was still under my legs and I couldn't get rolled back to my knee pads (which is my usual technique to control the crash...basically on knees and slide gloves..4 points down until I can get my feet in the act).
I basically slid butt first on my side diagonally down the road with my right hip being the main contact point.
I am trying to find out alternatives for hip protection. I plan on buying leathers in the Spring after I have saved my dough (dudes, I am deep crap with the CFO of the house as it is!)...but I doubt leathers would be my clothing of choice for a normal slide session, just downhill.

Did you receive the hip scab from a fall at high speed? The only time I’ve ever had hip damage was from riding vert. On high speed falls, my elbow, knee, and shoe (and sometimes shoulder/helmet) take the slide abuse.

I am looking for hip pads that have a hard shell. I have seen alot of options on hip pads but they are all cloth and soft and one crash doing a high speed slide would totally shred them.
Got any suggestions?

It has been a couple years since I ordered from ECS, but -- at that time -- I didn't have a problem contacting them (by email or phone).
Did have a minor problem with the resolution of a purchase (out-of-round wheel), but this ended up not being worth my time to pursue (didn't care for the wheels anyway).
The PD stuff I order arrived without a hitch.

General retailer issue of place selling safety gear - guess I picked wrong forum, sorry. They're one of few places selling Pro-Designed. Anyway, I've been calling and emailing for a couple weeks solid now - no response. I'll buy P-D direct, next time.

Has anyone ordered Pro-Designed gear from eastcoastskates.com lately? I ordered the wrist guards and over 4 weeks have passed without them coming. The company doesn't respond to email or vmail, so I filed a complaint with PayPal. Their response was to provide a tracking number showing shipment and delivery. The problem is, the delivery was not even to my town or county (though the state was the same) and now the complaint is stuck in 'pending' status. Is this normally a reputable company?

The Boeri Steez definitely comes down the back muck farthet than a bicycle helmet. It covers the occipital bone. There are other Boeris that do this too but they also cover the ears like a full motorcycle helmet. The Myto actually has a face guard like a Motocross helmet.
You might wnat to check out Leedom helmets too. Their XXL supposedly goes to 64cm.
I used to use a Team Wendy before switching to the Boeri. It has an adjustable fit that goes up pretty large but it is dorky looking and sits up real high like a bicycle helmet.
Having been born in the 1940's I remember clearly when ALL men wore hats ALL the time. This really didn't change until JFK didn't wear one to his inauguration. In addition to circumference, hats were often classified as long ovals, round ovals, and rounds. If you frequently get pressure on your forehead when trying on hats or helmets you probably tend toward the long oval size. You would favor Arai helmets over Shoeis as they tend to be more oval and the Shoeis more round. except for the Arai Quantum series which is Arais helmet for round heads. (as opposed to Cavaliers... never mind)

I'm looking at that Boeri Steez with great interest.
Question: Does it come down on the back of the neck like a skateboard helmet, or is does it fit high like a bike helmet? (hard to tell with the front view only, but since you have one, I figure you will know)
Measured my noggin again, and it comes up 24-1/2", so the XXXL will more than likely fit.
The SnowShack site is pretty informative. They even mention the head shape on their sizing page. I've been told (here) that I must have an oval noggin. I didn't know that head shape was a common consideration when selecting a helmet, though.
I may finally get rid of the red spot in the center of my forehead...<g>

Ethan, I am like you, I need to be able to hear. I have been deaf in my right ear since 1981 when a lady in White Ford LTD decided she needed a then 18 year old road cyclist as a hood ornament and slammed me into a telephone pole at 40 mph! Fractured skull, two fractured verts in my neck, 5 broken ribs, cracked hip, major concussion (dudes, I still hear the ringing to this day in real quiet places), and a broken jaw was the result!

Well, I have a Mad MaxII from Giro. I wish I hadn't bought it, tho. I can't hear anything when I wear it. There are no holes near the ears. I hardly ever use it unless the road is empty. I NEED to hear audio cues, its a safety issue.
I used to have a Giro Switchblade. I didn't trust the 'face protection" part of it. It felt flimsy, like it wouldn't hold up in a crash. Maybe I am wrong, I sold it instead of testing it.
Right now, if I had the cash I would just get serious and forget bike helmets and get a DOT/SNELL certified motorcycle helmet.
Timeship Racing sells a DOT/SNELL rated helmet with a custom face shield. Check it out...thats way more prtection for 100 bucks or so than you will get with a bike helmet.
PS I got a cracked cheekbone from a faceplant onto smooth skatepark cement. Luckily the bones held (doc said sometimes they dont hold and your face kind of deflates when your cheekbone caves in). I cant (dont want to) imagine what a crash like that would've been like at speed on rough road.

Hey gang. AFter much thought and contemplation (and yet another crash that took my face pretty damn close to the pavement) I have decided I need to purchase a helmet with face protection for some of the downhill bombing we have been doing lately. I have a great Protect Helmet I wear carving, sliding, and riding transition, but I need a helmet with some face protection for bombing because my stance puts my hands behind my back and my head directed forward. In a forward fall I may not be able to get my hands with my slide gloves out in front of me fast enough.
Please post links to websites or the name of the helmet you would suggest. You can also email me. I am looking at downhill mountain biking helmets and a variety of other options so please if you have any thoughts hook me up brah!

After continuously searching for a decent skate helmet in XXL - XXXL for the past couple of years I have hit upon a really good model: the Boeri Steez. It is technically a snowboard helmet which meets both the ASTM and CE-1077 standards.
The good points about this helmet are its ventilation (if you rip out all the winter earflap stuff) and the fact that it is styled like a skateboard helmet, which is no small thing when trying to convince my sixteen year old to wear it at all times. Comes in reasonable colors like gloss black, silver, etc... too.
The quality seems top notch, with an easy to use and adjust chin strap, and it has a plethora of velcro adjusting pads inside, which combined with the generous number of sizes that it comes in, let's you fit many different size heads.
My hat size is a round 61 - 62cm and I usualy wear a 7-3/4's hat and the XXL fits me fine with the side adjusting pads removed. My son uses the XXXL with all the pads in. It seems to me that the XXXL ought to fit size 8+ heads especially if you remove the adjusting pads.
Anyhow, those of you frustrated in your search for a decent large helmet should definitely check them out.

Yes this method works great. I hold the plastic over the eye on the oven to melt it. Just put a screw in one side and hold it with some pliers.

PD's are the best, custom made, last long, cool colors....I slammed last Sunday while skating during a very light rain.....I was wearing the wrist guards and I'm sure they saved me from causing serious pain.
