Ssssssssooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuullllllllll!!!!!! On my board I transcend everything negative going on in the world. I become a free floating manifestation of my soul dancing with gravity and flirting with the reaper yet never giving it to him. Even if I lose some of my flesh to the cause, my soul only grows stronger for my body is a mere tool to free my soul!!!!

I hit a rock but I still did roll. I hit a stick but no skin my toll. I hit a crack but no crash occurred. I hit a bump but my pain deferred. I hit a curb but no scrape I made. I hit a grate but I did not fade. I hit a bug but I did not smash. Then I hit a hole. I busted my ASS!

Off topis but who cares, I recently got into speedboarding after years of carving and slalom, and of course some street. I was riding my new Kebbek flushcut with randal dh and 180 hangers, and 75a gumballs. I have a huge hill in my town that about a mile long with a hard left at the bottom that your flying through. I finally broke 50mph on that hill. I have since purchased leathers, dont wanna fall on skin at that speed. I felt such a rush cornering at 45-50mph, I know its not really fast but it sure felt quick to me, hell its over 80kmh here in canada. I thought there was no way I was going to make the corner but I managed with about 2 feet of room to spare on the outside. Anyway, just wanted to share a little story. Speed rules...Top Challenge here I come....I hope.

Wacky: Dude, you and I have so much in common living here in NC! The bull crap in my league has been ongoing. Dude, I have yet to figure out what the deal is...both guys got their ass kicked! Ha ha. The average age in the league is about 28 so I guess they like going after the "old man".
I am going to finish the season and will hang up the boots and the gloves. Going to skate going to skate going to skate!

hey skatecats...
it's such a stoke to realize that skating is a viable "sport for life" the old school crew is setting the path to make skating stick around and become firmly rooted into american culture ...we are the first generation of skaters to make a significant effort to put skating on the map to stay!
we are passing the stoke on to our kids who can continue to build upon this great heritage ...it's such a rush that we have in our ranks skatecats throwin' down and stokin' it up into their 50's (and i'm sure their are skatecats out there representin' the sexagenarian crew as well)
i still play soccer as well and haven't yet found as much "aggro" behavior in the 30 & older league ...but skating is way more important because it is a year round stoke as opposed to a 3-4 month season once a year.
skating isn't as much a sport as it is a lifestyle and mentality and it's something you can share w/others by simply skating past them and making them stop and pause...
share the vibe & keep the stoke alive! ...monson

Hey NCL, glad to hear you're going to skate instead of being abused by others and your own anger at soccer. Yeah I used to do a sport or two that would just start getting me frustrated and angry. I kept thinking, "why am I doing this? its my own free time, it SHOULD be FUN!". So I dropped those activities and now only play at what I enjoy and makes me feel mellow. I can be totally stoked from a good slide session or an amazing carving run but never mad or frustrated. Yeah man, life's to short to spend any of it in a funk or angry at someone or something.

NCL, i think its a good idea to quit your soccer team for skating. I never liked team sports so much cause it's all about that 'win or lose' thing. When i'm out riding my board, i always feel i have won something so much bigger than every match or prize could ever keep up with.

Dudeeeeeeeeeees! Talk about stoked! Damn, you boys have got me even more motivated about skating! That, and the fact, I got into yet another shoving match last night during an adult league soccer game....dumbass took a swing at me after I made a save (I'm a goalkeeper) and my foot hit him in the chest. I didn't mean to kick the guy but he came after me anyway...I backed him up when I came up and headbutted him in the face...too much freakin' testosterone flying around and guys trying to "feel young" by mixing it up....as soon as this season is over I am going to stop playing and just use that time to skate! I was so pissed at myself that I just didn't get up and walk away. That jerk is known in the league for crap like that and you know it is just not worth it. (Many of the other players on the field on both teams came up to me afterwards and actually thanked me for putting that dude in his place but it really didn't make me feel better.) Skating never makes me pissed. Skating never makes me angry. Even when I crash I don't get mad. I know it is just part of the sport. Flowing down a hill, riding a bank, or even just cruising down a sidewalk just makes me smile. And when I need to feel "macho" or need an adrenilin rush I can aways drive up and speed carve Highway 421! I will be so glad when we finish up the summer league because I am going to make Wednesday nights skate night and just schedule it in place of soccer. At breakfast this morning I told my wife what I decided and she thought that was a great idea. Skating makes NCL a much happier boy! Roll on Brothers and Sisters! Roll on Roll on! (No headbutts necessary).
AdamH: Let me know if you buy that bag. I want one but I have busted my skate allowance for the next three months already....got to roll some more change.

NCL: That bag is perfect. I could definately use that not only for travel but to take all my boards and pads to KONA or wherever. Thanks. Wow, all this talk about youth and skateboarding is really bringing back some memories. Stealing cigarettes from my Mom and hiding in a secret spot only to hack , choke or even throw up. Every fourth of July my neighborhood would have a mini parade where all the kids in the neighborhood would decorate their bikes(for a prize) with Red White and Blue Streamers , ribbons etc. We'd put Baseball cards in our spokes to make the bikes click. I remember bombing the big hill in my area(Bedford Rd). A really steep hill with a left curve at the bottom. I remember getting about 3/4 of the way down and hitting a damn rock or something. I went flying and landed on my shoulder. I stilll have a scar from the road rash I got. I think the skateboard was a Plastic job from Sears called a Shark with a decal on the top that looked like the cover of JAWS. This coming weekend we are going to my father's house for a pool party /slide show. He's going to break out the slide projector and have a show. Most of the photos are pre 1980. I'm hoping to see some skate photos. What you guys were saying about skating being like flying is right on the money. It's such a sense of freedom, it's hard to explain to someone has never or ever will be on a skateboard. I got the Stoke!!!

Full on stoke and toke, right on!
Yeah, that's it, it is flying. That's the feeling. Other than the flashback to the 70's, the flying feeling is the reason I skate!
I so want to fly down that hill I grew up on. It's on Long Island, NY and I live near Boston now. Long drive, but I will get there.

I live in the same hood I grew up in. Homeboy style. Ride'n it all again, but as a kid I was riding it on a bike or hitting hills in a wagon. I didn't start skating until my 20's. Lots of memories come flooding back living in the same neighborhood you grew up in. Football games, kick the can, playing in the creek, playing doctor in the new house that was under construction. In my youth I had flying dreams all the time. Some were full on soaring, but many were just above the ground, steering with my feet. When I started riding the longboard it gave me chills as I had vivid recall/de ja vu. The board is my wing, and I love the flight. I used to have dreams about the railroad tracks we'd walk. Lots of time hiking down those old tracks, flattening quarters and dimes (real silver) and crusing to the abandoned house were we kept the playboy stash. I'd dream about the tracks - only they were gone and all that was left was a gravel road, as I went further down the tracks I'd run into houses and businesses and stuff that wasn't there. Its all there now. No track, jogging path, new homes. All came true. Freaky.
I'm listening to Muddy Waters sing I Feel Like Going Home. I'm there with ya Muddy. I may go home and play my guitar on the back porch, sing some blues and blow some harp. Blow some smoke and take a flight on Redbud Hill. No, that really is the name of the I live on.

NCL - I'm 41, too. I think that for a lot of us skateboarding is a way to return to our youth, in more ways than one. I think it helps to keep you young. It's certainly great excersize, and you have to have a young state of mind to even think about getting on a skateboard. In my neigborhood I am the only crazy adult skateboarder around, although I do have a buddy who comes over and helps me terrorize the neigborhood sometimes. The kickflipper kids don't exactly know what to make of me, although they do ask a lot of questions about my boards, ect. One kid on a bike wanted to trade his bike for my long board. Of course, I had to turn that one down.
Has anyone else returned to the skate spots of their youth after a long absence? Or are you planning to, like I am?

Silversurfer: Great post on the going back home thing. It is so funny that this topic has come up. Father's Day weekend I went back home (1 hour from where I live now) and took my Dad to a baseball game. On the way back from the game I found myself taking a "short cut" through the old neighborhood and by the house where my best friend and skate partner use to live. His backyard was a dream for skateboarders because it was actually a paved parking lot for his Dad's business. There was a loading dock we could drop off of, 50 gallon barrels that we could slalom around, and we even had a small quarter pipe back there. I use to hang out at that house all of the time and when it was time to come home I would skate back to my house via a route that I figured out that only required a little bit of pushing through some flat and up one hill. The distance was about 1.3 miles (according to the odometer). The other night with Dad I drove the exact route back to his house (still the same place), paying close attention to the pavement, any changes in the intersections, etc. I have been daydreaming ever since on making that run again! One of these weekends if any of you happen to be in Concord, North Carolina and you see a 41 year old bombing Winecoff and Allison Street hills and tearing down Brookwood making a sketchy blind turn onto Harris Street and sliding to a halt at the corner of McGill Ave in order not to get run over by all of the freakin traffic that is on that street now that dude will be ME!
Roll on Brothers and Sisters! Roll On Roll on!

hey skatecats...
here's my own "70's flashback" i recently went back home for a visit to seattle i brought "the gear" ...my 5 yr old bowie & i spent a couple of days cruisin' my old skate haunts which translates into streets & banks from back in the day (the ramps are long gone!)
we had a gas and it was particularly nostalgic when we ran some gs slalom course w/pinecones on my street just like i did for the 1st time as a 10 year old back in the summer of '75!
talk about a huge stoke... sharin' the vibe w/my son ...tracing the shadows of my youth ...seeing it mirrored in the elation of bowie's face ~ now that's a true "kodak moment"
share the stoke!! ...keep the vibe alive!!
peace ...monson

Yes! I want to go back to the street that I grew up on. It's a dead end hill, and it was the first place that I ever skateboarded. If that street is still there, it will bring back a lot of powerfull memories. A big part of my returning to skateboarding seems to be reliving my childhood, I guess. Going back to where I grew up will be wierd and eerie, but fun. We used to go straight down that hill and jump off when we went too fast. Who ever got the farthest down was the winner. We did'nt know a lot about carving or foot braking back then. With my new equipment and skills I should rule that hill now. Just have to find those kids I used to skate with.

I'm with ya on that one IC. I plan on taking my skate with me next time I head to my hometown of Wilmington, Delaware. There's a V shaped ditch there that I need to re-aquaint myself with. Do they make travelbags for Skateboards like they do for surfboards?
