Keeping with the flow. Having spent my formative years skating in the inner city's of the Midwest, I never had an example to follow or someone knowledgeable with experiences to share. Pumping and self-propulsion came by naturally though and the lack of hills or transition seldom seemed to limit the ride. Many miles of riding has passed since then and now I have a nephew who seems to share the interest. Yesterday we rode together for the first time since I handed him a slalom deck and cones (sending him home w/o instructions). It was apparent that he couldn't navigate the course I had set up so I told him to join me at a nearby tennis court for a lesson in pumping. Watching him take those first awkward attempts to coordinate the turns w/weighting and unweighting brought back some of the old memories. Then seeing the smile of realization as the fleeting sensation of the energy produced by decompression through a turn signaled that another generation will know the power of sustaining speed!

Bozobit: the 6 stories garage in Purdue... that's where I did my first carves! It was Xmas nite last year, 8 degrees with strong wind. Salt all over the place. I drove there alone. I got this 47 inches longboard for $50 and couldn't wait to try it. Ended up getting salt all over my board. No one taught me how to do it, I just decided to slowly carve down the garage.
I never found partners in Purdue, but now I got one young fella to skate with me at UIUC.

Just discovered you and would share an OLD soulcarver experience! In '78 I built a 43" longboard in shop class replete with Alvas and Bennet Pros and painted it bright yellow. Got an A+ and still have it! Many late nights carving in a big parking garage at Purdue in the early 80's. I would get there at 1AM and ride 6 levels down until nearly dawn. Got my friend hooked and one night he went without me and broke his two front teeth! Will never forget it! Now I have a 48" Hypercarve, moved to Singapore, and just turned 40. I just got it back from my sea shipment. Need to find a place to ride! Take care.

Hi everyone, my first post to this group. Borrowed a old family friends long board. I have ridden a few longboards before (36-42"). But this thing was LONG. Never seen anything like it Greg Knowll 58" Maui. The time was 11:45pm on the eve of my 30th Birthday. Walked to the top of long sweeping local hill and started my run. Scrubbed a little speed on the first corner and headed into the valley. As I gained speed into the dip a car approached from the other way( 2 way traffic on our little English roads). At the same time a speed wobble started coming on. Nothing to do but clench the butt and ride on. Powered past the car lost thge wobble and threw my arms up in sheer delight. Checked my watch 12:00, "now your 30 old boy" I said to myself. NEVER FELT BETTER IN MY LIFE...

Speedy, youre more than a skater dude. You're not out for kicks, to cause aggro or impress. Youre there to feed your soul. The best rides are always when your on your own. Sometimes i think its good to be out with a few friends. And dont get me wrong i have no problem with our stumpy cousins. Me and and a couple of mates stopped on our way past the local skatepark. The kids were blown away by the 6 footers, they all had a go, a few were walking the board pretty good by the time we left. I had a go on the half pipe much to everyones amusement. i only wiped out a few times! Even the bmx lads were stoked, we swapped steeds there too. it was real nice, we fed off each other and left with mutual respect and more rounded skills. If youre happy inside with what you do, people with open minds will warm to that. Lets represent and be proud of what we do.

The Tuesday ride to Chemistry, on the other side of campus. All downhill. The rain starts and the sidewalks clear. It starts pouring. My Vision and I carve our way through the water. I get to class soaked and beaming. I'm new to longboarding, but now I'm hooked. It was a religious experience. Praise the Lord for His beautiful creation.

Just got in from a midnight session out here in the Desert of AZ... for about the last 10 minutes of carving the coyotes were howling, could not have been sweeter... Perfect weather, perfect hills, and hearing the coyotes sing for the first time in a good two years... Cannot wait to go out tomorrow after I get home from work and the traffic dies down.

Black Hill regional park, it even has hill in the name. Skating just before sunset bombing the steep lakeside run over and over. A short trip through the park trails to the backside hill and back around to the lakeside hill. We form a train of 4 cruising buddies goin down the mellower backside hill, just pumping, cruising and bombing. We get in our cars as the sunsets over the lake, another thoroughly satisfying weekend of skating.

Here's to you, Ken Kesey, I don't know if you skated or not, but your books sure took me on some great rides. I still pick up "Sometimes A Great Notion" once in a while, open it at random, and read a few pages. I hope the world you've gone to is filled with love and adventure.

Speedy, I've just recently got back into skating after a long lay off, I'd never even heard of an ollie, tried practicing them for a few days and after numerous nasty little falls and achieving giant ollies all of a few inches off the ground whilst stationary went back to enjoying what I really enjoyed doing.... skating. If you get off doing flip tricks great, all respect to ya, it sure needs practice BUT skating's about doing what you want to do whether tech stuff, vert, cruising etc.. and finding the soul in that. Keep skating fella !

Wow, soul, brothers, soul! At this point, I only have a speed board, though I am seriously contemplating plopping down the money for a Sector 9 cosmic. They're just too smooth. I rode one years ago when they first came out, and fell in love. Maybe... just maybe I'll have to get one after all. I really don't have the money (college and all that good stuff), but still... that would be too cool. You know people, I never considdered myself a *real* skater because I was never part of the culture, never could rail slide, kick flip and shove-it. But I've been skating for longer then most of my friends, for a higher percentage of my life and I came back to it with more regularity. I'm starting to think I can claim the title of a skater. I can hold my own in a conversation, I know what makes a board good for what, I know tips, tricks and how-tos, and I'm a decent longboarder. It feels good to be a skater.

i am priveliged. I own two boards. I have one set of truck and wheels. My first board is a 38 sector 9 cosmic2. it is like shortboard surfing, pump for speed, loose as hell only happy when its on the edge of traction. It slides for me, i dont force it. screaming 360 slides, grabbin a rail and leaning. its natural. Priveliged cos its signed by nat young. Dont ride it in the rain. Swop the hardware onto board two. Shaped for me by my best friend. his name is perry, he makes surfboards. Its 6 foot long, a real noserider. dont carve for anything just glides. crosstep. hang 10, lift the tail up. soularch.admire the effort that went into it.stroke the floral nose, the dark mahogamy stringer. Yeah im priviliged. And im happy too. dedicate. represent. Glide and slide with pride.

"nah he'll let this one go mate, it's just too big..." All zoom lenses are on me as I pump up for the ramp. "He's going for it, I don't believe it...!" A helicopter circles, taking big wave footage. Jetskis droning a safe and ready distance outside the imact zone. "He's making it..." Big backhand drop, full style points for a soularch under 100000 tons of lip, then back off the shoulder for another. Commentators go ape. All just part of the session for the h0dad.

I'm 48 yrs old and it's really great to be skating again after about a 10 yr layoff! We should be buried in snow by now but today was 60 degrees, clear mountain sunshine, with a dozen skaters out and hardly any traffic. After brooming some curves we skated all afternoon. We pulled a guy uphill behind the car on inline skates 35-40 mph, he loved it. Several people passing in cars were clearly stoked! Riding down at sunset with the snow-clad high mountains glowing pink I finished the day with 24 miles under the urethane.
The other day while walking back uphill (no traffic) this raven was cruising overhead, circling and checking me out. Several times he'd zoom up and run out of speed, flip over on his back, fold his wings, and drop maybe 20 feet, then flip back upright and fly along for awhile then do it again. I think he was stoked by the skateboarding and saying "hey this is fun, too"!
If you ever quit skating, don't be afraid to give it another try. It's got me feelin' fine!

Full moon, halloween night, all the ghosts and goblins have gone to bed, I hit my favorite skate spot, smooth long mellow hill. Visions of Alva at Wallos, Cross at the any Slalom competition dancing in head. Just attacking the smooth asphalt, going for run after run. Night skating by the light of the moon.

Happiness is letting a kid who's never seen a slalom deck try to run some cones.. Unhappiness is watching your new Comet get kicked out and plow into a curb Happiness again as no damage done and seeing the grin on their face as they try it again.

Haha congratulations, that is sweet. I have a friend who gave up freestyle due to knee trouble. After exams, he has agreed to accompany me to a very very nice local 9 storey garage for an evening of carves; I'll take a speed deck, a pintail and maybe a small slalom board, in an earnest effort to get him hooked.

Had a rad session at a local parking garage in Glendale Ca. Invited my normal longboard skate friend and he invited two other guys.
One guy hadn't skated since the 80's, only on shortboards. The other is really into snowboarding but had nearly no skateboarding experience.
I brought a quiver that included an Ed Economy Bank Rider, a Afroman Big Worm, G&S 38" pintail, Deplo 40" Calimari, and a 47" Gravity Classic Carve. The new guys got a chance to pick and ride any deck they wanted. Every run was a different deck.
The 80's skater said he hadn't had that much fun in ages, and said didn't realize what he's been missing. The snowboarder was stoked, and wants a board now.
It was a rad day, breaking in some new longboarders.
Oh yea, and found a cool 100 yard long ditch perfect for doing lipslides, grinds, and bank carving too.
