Speedy, you brought back my memories of collegiate (and ex-collegiate) life in the city, young, broke, and free, 25 yrs ago. All day at the midwestern "cow college", endless traffic, noise, dust, exhaust, everyone in town getting in each other's way. Finally, after supper... We'd hit the "pedestrian mall" behind the closed shops, deserted and quiet, run up the fire escape to the roof where we stashed our plywood. Cover stairs, planters, bike racks, etc. with plywood ramps and start rolling down the slight incline, from ramp to ramp, grinding, spinning 360's, sliding Bertlemans, whatever else we could think of, just a few friends. There was also a parking ramp there, empty at night, for downhill rides, or dropping into the five-level spiral, sliding catamarans. We rode there most evenings, never hassled, seldom watched, finally putting the plywood away and rolling home to bed. My rear foot always ached from the sharp transitions, couldn't get enough. Never slid on cherry blossoms, though! I finally made the break away from the midwest, pedaling the bike across the Great Plains, hundreds of miles of wide open country, into the badlands, washes, and canyons of the West, climbing into the mountains, feeling like a strong healthy animal, swooping down passes through the piney forests, and finding a new home.

Mat (lushlongboard dude)only just saw your post(16/2) just moving in at sleepy Wareham just outside Poole, your welcome down anytime to skate and relax listening to me system. Bring some tunes, hey how about getting something on down South as they say Poole its a beautiful place... hehehe (when its not raining that is. Sorry speedy and just after you rekindled the soul. How about all these beautiful warm summer evenings I'am gonna be spending cruising the Dorset sea front, the caress of cool gentle sea breezes against my face(although at the moment probably be buffered by gale force winds, sand and sea!!).

Damn. I destroyed the mood. I shall now attempt to replace it:
Last week, I left my dorm at about 7:50 to get dinner at the cafeteria. They had closed for dinner, but were about to open for their "late-night" thingy, where they serve nachos and swill like that. I decided to head out for a bit, and grabbed the long board (the only other longboarder in the dorm said "Dude, you're pretty determined", then mumbled something about a midterm and closed the door with a frightened look). Anyhow, I headed out. Nice, warm night, bright moon, smooth pavement... ah, yes! Found some cherry trees blooming behind the Engineering building. To the best of my knowledge, I'm the first person in history to do a powerslide on fallen cherry blossoms. Oh, it was wonderful! I cruised about for about 15 minutes, then came back, winded, cold and exhilirated!

a dream of summer: It's 11pm, at the top of a mountain pass in the American West, with a few friends. The sound of a buddy's car disappears into the depths of the valley. The moon's almost full and halfway up the southeastern heavens, giving the pavement a soft glow and drowning most of the stars. The lights of civilization sparkle on the valley floor, far below, lines of headlights and tail lights going there and back, but none of the noise reaches this high. Up here, a soft hush of wind through pine needles and quiet, friendly voices. The air's sweatshirt cool, long pants cool, and the asphalt's warm under your palm from the day's hot sun. A delicious smell of lupine, juniper, and sage drifts by. There's at least a thousand turns on smooth, clean asphalt waiting beyond the first drop, around the first bend of the road. Five miles of arcing, soaring, dancing flight. It's time to roll...

In the car, headed to the hill, Aqua Velvets, Los Straightjackets, BT, 40 oz. to Freedom, Dixie Chicken, Gary Hoey, Jon & the Nightriders, any ska, Bob Marley, Carlos Santana. On the board, the winds, the birds, urethane on asphalt, the rest of the natural world, with an ear cocked for the sound of a front bumper headed my way.

Hey you part-time-punks, here is my “soulcarving weekend”:
Thursday- skateboarding the far back corner banks w/ a friend at the Potomac Mills' Vans Skatepark.
Friday- carving the local hill on snowboards with a life long friend and my youngest brother.
Saturday- taking 2nd by edging out Badlander Curt Kimbel at the DC Outlaw Series Race #3.
Sunday- giving thanks, hanging with the wife, and possibly race some more slalom.

I'm with the hOdad on this one. Surf guitar and soul carving, to me, open views of the same psychic landscape.

Reverb surf guitar gets the h0dad firing, it's a soulful epic soundscape that has him attempting cheater-5's in the hallway, then one last blast of Miserlou and nothing can stop the session.
Anyone here heard of the Plugz? Man they are cool city.

Punk is the mind food that births the most epic sessions. Always happy with Ash on the walkman and smile on the face. Finally the weather has calmed, down here in somerset its been dry enough to skate for a solid week, and its light enough for a post work session. We found a real nice hill a couple of weeks ago, steep sections, cruisey bits. Craigs named it Pluckies. Its been our temple of worship. We have us on film throwing ourselves down it, it is a funny thing watching yourself skate. But after so much time in our worship, Pluckies seems tame, cuddly and warm. I think it may be time to move on and find a new form of enlightenment for the summer ahead. Here's to you Pluckies, thanx for the memories and the things u taught us. Good spots never die.

i agree with t and repairman cam, devo and the ramones are both some of my favorites but if you want to just get pumped up and all that good stuff i'll listen to the misfits (with danzig, of course). i don't know what it is about them but they are just the greatest band. most of the new misfits stuff is not anywhere near the calibaur of the fits with mr. glen danzig, he had all the great songs, and that voice...
