Sorry for my absence and lack of support this last month. Ive hid from computers, mobile phones and television in the back of my volkswagon passat. Its becoming a birth of spring ritual for me and sets me up for summer. Took the wagon a bit further south this time, down to sennen and back up the coast(avoiding bank holiday Newquay) to my regular haunt of saunton/woolacombe. Stoked up on the cameraderie and friendship of the whole surf community, skated with old friends, met some new ones at the seasons first beach bonfire down in polzeath. Here's to long evenings. Heres to watching the sun go down after closing time. Heres to Mutual respect for the dedication of getting to the beach from wherever u are. Festivals, barbecues and competitions in the sun. To duneboarding. To being warm at night. To northern girls. To my fellow longboarders. We dont need description, catagorisation, sorting and filing. We see it in each others eyes and share a secret smile. This is what we've been waiting for. This is what makes the last 6 dark months worthwhile. My advice? Dont miss a God damn minute.

Longboard, Shortboard, the important part is the board. All forms of skating are positive. Today- 70 plus degrees, warm sunshine, birds chirping, smooth carves, my 42" street-machine revving at max rpm, shaped a new 47" hotrod after the session, Definately NOT a wasted day! This is in partial response to jeremey cooper. I also started riding a shorter board recently and it's great, very soulful, like I used to skate. It's a new school shape, but 34" long and 8.75" wide. I have it set up with wide Indys and Bones Cruisers. The interesting thing is that I find myself taking this board to the grocery store, that used to be a run that I favored my 44" Comet for. But I can pump this board, do fast ollies up curbs, nollie over cracks, and just make more mayhem, while at the same time feeling quite the soulcarving rider. No flippy tricks, just fast cruising with a more aggressive edge. I can slide this setup well, and do my old favorite, "driveway hopping". Soul Carving isn't just for longboards, it's what you feel comfortable on.

Wow, good girl Sarah! I never had a dog that nice. Allthough it DOES remind me of a simielar story...
Several years ago, when I was about 12, there was a kid down the street who had one of those nervous little beasties that look like tiny greyhounds. Well, he was fond of putting on roller blades, and letting the poor monster drag him (she loved it). Well, on this particular day, he got almost thirty feet before he fell and scraped his knee pretty well. His mom had see all this of course, and instantly came out to yell at him (I remember very little, seeing how hard I was trying not to laugh at the line "You said you were taking the dog for a walk! We've been through this before! That's not called taking the dog for a walk! That's called 'dog on rollerblades'! You got hurt last time, remember?" (she went on for some time this way)). Anyhow, that was fairly humerous. But it got so much better later that day, when a construction worker from a nearby construction site dropped a bucket of red paint, which splattered all over the sidewalk. This bright red memorial reminded all the kids of the street that this was indeed "Drew's Corner", the corner that Drew ate asphalt on the second time he tried "dog on rollerblades"

I am the dog of MissouriMatt. Walker Hound and Pointer. Ten years old, and two years out of my pulling prime. Usually I don't even get up when he rattles the harness. I don't know what made me get up tonight. I just felt like a run. He grabbed the 58" and off we went down the drive way, around the corner and down the quiet, tree lined Lakeshore Drive. I pissed every where I could. Let those other bitches know I was there. It felt good to get out. I drank some water and chilled.

It is refreshing to "hear" about people talking about true spirtuality(not religion)when regarding their varied longboard experiences. By reading the many posts, I feel as much at one with those who have wrote them, as I do with the Creator when I soulcarve on my Lib Technologies longboard. About a year ago, I took up skating to pacify myself until I was able to surf on a regular basis.I visited my brother in L.A. last year and can't wait to go back. This time for good I hope. I live in upstate New York and the ocean is not readily accessible. Although I do enjoy watching the new school trick skaters do their thing, I agree that what we do is for the sake of skating only. In the movie "Point Break", Patrick Swayze's character said of surfing(which I agree holds true to longboarding)"...it's a state of mind. It's where you lose yourself and find yourself." I skate everyday. Where I live, people think that I skate to exercise/train or to impress folks. Although vigorous exercise, through skating, is part of my daily routine, I skate only to skate.I don't train and I sure don't do this for anyone else's benefit but my own. Nothing else matters. Shane Dorian said it best in the surf movie, "In God's Hands." "...Everything.Whatever I'm doing. Why I'm doing it. At that moment, it all makes sense. Most everyone wants something from it. I'm afraid if I ask for more, it'll all disappear." Shane was talking about a tube, but I'm sure you can see where longboarding is synonomous here.

Andy, Cool beans! I'd be very curious to see those, actualy. Not having a video, and being a college student (i.e. dirt poor), I don't see much of a chance to get one any time soon. But no matter. I'll get do something like that at some point:)

i recently sold my longboard and my freestyle board and i gotta tell you, it was one of the best desision i have made in a long time. for like three days i just sat around and watched skate videos and looked at old magazines, it was fun. anyways, on the fourth day i was thinking about what kind of set up i should get this time and i couldn't make up my mind. then i found these old pictures from when i started skating and it was really cool, i had forgot all about them. i had a shortboard when i first started, it was a santa cruz with unit trucks and some 60mm bones wheels. i loved that board, it was so smooth and it could get going pretty fast for a shortboard. as i was looking through the pictures i remembered how much fun i had back them, just crusing around and popping fast ollies and just carving. that was when i decided to get a shortboard again and get back to real street skating. i'm not talking about all that flippy stuff and going to skate a spot or anything, i mean skating the streets, the streets are my spots. so i ordered a new set up that night and i've been waiting for it to get here and if finally did, i was so stoked. i got a natas kaupas element with tracker trucks and some 60mm spitfires. it is seriously like one of my favorite rides i've had, really radical. i have just been on like a high for a couple of days, just super happy. it's cool because i don't have to pick which board i want to use and stuff like that, i just wake up, grap my board and just go. i think having one board is simpler and it makes everything else simpler. life is good...

Hey, regarding the UK part of the Z-games. Did you all catch the news that there are now flights from Stanstead to Newquay? Would certainly save us South East types a 5 hr drive!
Given that the travelling wouldn't be too bad now, I'd be well interested!
Enjoy the spring sunshine everybody!

Andy, you hit it on the nose. It's not the length of the board as much as soul and style of the skater. My favorite thing to do is grab my short 29" Flexdex Slater deck on smooth flats and carve and "surf" the pavement with cool lines. It's the best way to get a carve fix in Miami where we don't have many hills. I don't like that trick stuff either unless it's in a flowing style like you see on the Sector 9 vids where they are cruising at speed and using the tricks to jump over obstacles in a stylish way. Newschool skaters tend to skate without much flow. But...it's all good. I always enjoy myself when I see the trick skaters throw tricks around my job. You can pick up some great ideas from everybody.

Hey Speedy. I have done that. Video is exactly what a soul carve is about to me. Or capturing you riding anyway, if you know what I mean. I have been a skydiving camera flyer for about 14 years now, and I bolt my video to anything I can now. I have a sony PC7 that I use for rough applications, and it is small enough to mount on the front or back or off the side of a deck. I use the truck holes to attach a plate and bolt the cam to the plate, in any position I want.
If I had a web site (or a faster connection) I would show you some clips. Ah, but it is always better in my mind not to see other peoples stuff first. It clouds your own creativity.
There are also all kinds of spycams (whose ads you can hardly avoid on the internet pop-up spam scene), that work off a camcorder. That is, you can attach the camcorder to your body, and mount the smaller "lens" to what ever you like. The resolution isn't as good, but you may like the results depending on how critical you are of your work.
Definitely worth the effort for the cool P.O.V. shots you get.

Rob, Great shots! I like that idea... like you, I ride a SuperCruiser, and am (or should I say, was and will be) into photo. I've been toying with the idea of mounting a video camera on the nose of a longboard and carving a hill. You ever try this, or know someone who has?

I've been shooting some photos for a Lomo show on the theme of "flow" (Lomo is a small, old-skool Russian point-and- shoot camera with a rabid cult following) and of course, when I think of flow, I think of longboarding (who doesn't?) so I hopped on the board, lomo in hand, and hit the street- the results, so far: http://www.interlog.com/~robcruic/lomo/longboard.HTM

andy, I think alot of us here can relate to what you're feeling. I've been divorced for over 10 years now, and in that time I've had relationships with numerous women - some wonderful, some not so good. My relationships with my boards, however, have been nothing but rewarding. And, I might add, with the performance of the new products on the market (some are just new to me), that enjoyment continues to increase AND keep me young. Even when I slam, and hurt for days, I get something positive out of longboarding. I got it bad, and that IS good!

i found my soul on a shortboard yesterday, i just happened to be skating street with a few buds, busted out some mean stuff, but the thing i remember the most was how when i was just rolling slow, i stretched up, eyes shut and then gazed into the sky. out of everything i did that day this was the greatest feeling and stuck in my mind the most. I think alot of the time with shortboarders tricks are done for the sake of doing them and not because of the beautiful feeling of skating. now when i carve (or jump around), short or longboard, i don't carve for the sake of it. its just for that indescribable gliding, flowing feeling. i love skateboards, and have done for years. they make my life so much better:- i went out a'drinkin last night, and instead of waking up this morning and feeling sorry for myself 'about a girl' i woke up and laughed for hours. This about sums up what skating does for me. (or am i rambling?)
im in love with skateboards. i just needed to say this, as if i told my non skater friends i might get some odd glances. now i just feel like i need to let others feel the same. but how can you teach soul?

That's my kind of math, Speedy. If only they taught it like that in school. I have also been watched over by the "Wipeout God, or Goddess, and haven't been served in a while. Knock on wood. And we'll figure out a plan for the Z-games, it'll come together, we just need more input. My board is calling...... ..........cheers................ ...bObO.....................

Yeah, it IS a bit west, huh? I hadn't thought about that... too cought up in the excitement, I suppose. And '03 sounds like a much better idea to me. The thing I liked about Ashland was a) cool people, b) longboard-friendly, and c) ALL downhill.
-Speedy 2 miles a day (average) 5 days a week 10 weeks per quarter 2 quarters down since September 2 major wipe-outs I'm averaging 1 fall every 100 miles:)

I've been chatting with folks as well and it seems like most could'nt swing it this summer, (myself included). Next year would give time for all the enjoyment of planning and such. Also got some input on sites: Most people thought Ashland to be to far west for the east-coasters, a few said Indiana, or Iowa,- someplace central, in the middle. (Cheaper airfare as well!) But if only 4 people are interested it seems kind of futile to get much done, oh well, back to the drawing board. ************************************bOb O********************

i had a nice chat last night to a fellow who promotes custom car shows who may be able to accomodate the z games in next years show itinerary. this allows insurance matters, security, toilets, and some aspects of advertising to be sorted out...so whatever happens i have to sort out loads yet(as i'm smack in the middle of a phd)...but the z games will happen next summer 2003 definitely with slalom, high jump, barrel jumping,360 comp, longboard slalom, loudest shirt etc.
