park preservation
On 8/23/2002 chris wrote in from (63.242.nnn.nnn)

hey guys I would gladly back an organization to help preserve these historical sites, if it would help one person from having to bare the pain that many of us here in the southeast of PA. are feeling this week. Sadly I believe it usually comes down to money ,as it did for MAGIC, which was offered to the township to take over in multible ways over the years.(buy, lease, ...).The current owner/developer even offered the land to be used as a recreational area. A prebuilt area at that. But instead the township took somewhere around 750 dollars per home from the developer in place of the developer providing recreational land. We may have tried to little to late here in Reading, I'm not sure ,but I do know that I have learned from this loss and like I said I will back any organization that will help to preserve these places. Now go skate something

Scabs, I'd be way interested, but like you said, very few can bankroll something like that.

On a slightly related note: An hour from my house is the old Falcon skatepark in Huntington, WV (I found a couple pictures of it on http://criticalthrash.com/skatespots/ ). I'd freely donate time and energy to try and get it somewhat skate-able again. I went there last spring and it was in pretty bad shape.

Park Preservation
On 8/23/2002 Scabs wrote in from (66.21.nnn.nnn)

I would gladly join a foundation that preserves old skate sites.

Keep in mind that it would have to garner a fair amount of financial backing. If you`d want to preserve an old park, you`d probably have to either purcahse the land and or cover the operating expenses, including liability insurance. The latter being the biggest obstacle.

Isn`t that what closed all the parks in the early 80`s? Lawsuits are inevitable. Having an airtight disclaimer to protect the park and it`s insurer isn`t so easy.

Still, I`d be intersted if others are too...

A horrendous scenerio like the one that those pictures convey ought NEVER to be allowed to occurr again on this planet! Skateboarding is a hugely valuable part of the this human phoenomena- little two legged creatures walking around & held down to the surface of this planet and should be celebrated & preserved! There are groups to protect old houses & landmarks & bla bla- there NEEDS to be a group formed to protect the origins of skateboarding! We are letting the history of this young, beautiful thing be annihalated by these ignorant, money-hungry abominations! We MUST stop it!
I appologize for this tirade. Those pictures really got to me. They attacked my very being.

Here are to more picts from Wally's site of CCSK8Park

To check it from RT95 DC Beltway go south on Rt 5 to Rt 301 in Waldorf. Go through Waldorf to White Plains and make a left at Demarr Rd (Where the old Atlantic Cycle Shop was). go to the end and cross over St Charles Parkway and into the White Plains Golf Course parking lot. Bear left and you will see it on the left.
Say hi to Wally's crew and please dont skate the surface until it is ready... We have come a long way since the county kids protested on the court house steps to get his park
Expect a mid to late fall opening.

R.I.P. READING/MAGIC/SPINNING WHEELS...
On 8/22/2002 CHRIS wrote in from (63.242.nnn.nnn)

Well we all knew it was coming, although most of us kept thinking we'll get at least one more run in.I arrived at the park last night for what has become a almost daily ritual for the last month and a half, skating with lee, tim, t.z.,john f. etc... .When I saw the heavy equipment blocking the entrance I figured , no problem I'll just park at the garage and walk back. When I turned the corner with board in hand ,ready to ride, I could not believe my eyes. Shredded , That is the only way to desribe the shape of our beloved park. Words can not desribe what this place has meant to many of us ,and although this is a time to remember all the good times we've had, I beleive it is also a time to evolve, seek, build, take over new grounds. So never forget Magic, and now go out and use the lessens it has shown us to skate and detroy everything. R.I.P. MAGIC

re: Wally's latest

Here's the correct link to the Monrovia park:

Link

Today I checked out another one of Wally's projects: the now under construction Upland park. Unfortunately, while Wally's company is building it, Purkiss Rose designed it. Mostly street, but in keeping with Upland's heritage, there's a full pipe leading into a vert bowl. Hard to tell from where I was standing, but it looks like the pipe will only be about 15' diameter. D'oh!

On 8/20/2002 Frank Henn wrote in from (24.164.nnn.nnn)

I just heard about magic getting dozed. I used to live in reading and skated there in the late 80'. Definately one of my favorite places to skate. Checking out the posted pics brings me back. Its a shame such an awesome place to skate will be gone. I wish i could skate it one last time. if anyone has any more pics of the place i would love to see em. Sorry for the loss. I remember Bill Danforth skating there doing laid back smiths in the pool and cement chunking off from his trucks. That place rocked.

NW Parks

Washington parks to hit:
Orcas Island, the place is sick. Best park in Washington.
Ballard Bowl. It's one of the smoothest bowls ever. It's in the ballard skatepark, and is supposed to be torn down after two years, to make room for civic center. So, hit it while you can.
Sumner skatepark, Huge bowl, real pool coping.
Bainbridge is good.

Classic is Seaskate, near the Seattle Center (east side).
Raincity skatepark is indoor, Big half-pipe, mini also.

Couple other "OK" parks.
Burien Skatepark, Renton Skatepark, Kent (fenwick park).

Many in Oregon that are a must. Like Newburg, Donald Aumsville, Burnside, Lincoln City, Port Orford.
