I notice that there are a lot of 30 something guys getting back into skating after stopping some time ago. I suspect this is due in part to many of the new skateparks being built. With round walls, long snake style runs, and deeper bowls skating can once again be about turning and not JUST flipping. I say it many times each day, "skating is so rad right now" Many of the modern street and vert pros are making a decent living from contest earnings, the number of skaters continues to climb and parks- some great, some good and some not so good, are being built each month. My point? I'm not sure i have one i just want to let all those who are getting back into or thinking about dusting off that old Powell board and trying to see if they still "got it" , to go for it! Get out there and enjoy what is being built, try slalom, try freestyle, try longboarding, build your quiver of boards and enjoy each one everyday. Skate for Life, Buddy Carr- Tracker Trucks

I think I'm the kid of the room at 28 (I just never got into the switch kickflip nine million stairs thing and always preferred to carve and grind). Usually when I hit a park (the closest one is 2-3 hours away), the fact that I teach high school comes out and I spend my time between runs answering questions about skating back in the 80s and telling tons of "when I was yer age..." stories. LOL
As far as equipment goes, I'm currently morphing from short to long boards. I ride a custom done by factory 13 with indy 215s and big fat 65mm 78a wheels.

That's pretty funny. Now how about some directions to that pool?! It looks like it could use some more skate action.

there are many different ways to approachit, the bast is that it is a journey.i never qiut, but have have found my self prefering different types of equipment thru the years.i started longboarding in 87 with the SMA's that were available at the time and have been going long and short when i feel the need to since.currently i am riding a popsicle stick but totally diggin it.i think in the long, mid range wes humpstons decks are killing it right now,the shogo is one of the few decks that really have the old feeling.the alvas i find my self re drilling the wheel base but like those decks too.trucks, one word, indy.wheels for hard i like the spitfires, medium, alien workshop clearlights, soft, black road rider 59,s.also the key is to drop the dime on the bearings, bones ceramics when you can,but never less than bones swiss.this alone puts the fun factor in for me because it translates directly into speed and ease of pump, and for this middle aged, outta shape ,fat man i'll take any help i can get,cf

Welcome back Otis. As far as getting back into it, just ride everything and anything as often as you can. Whatever you ride, just concentrate on drawing out the cleanest lines possible. Work on clean FS and BS turns and grinds on tranny and let the rest take care of itself. Have fun.

Hey Otis,
There are a great number of set-ups for park riding and pools to be had. Try some of the sites in the links section for boards/trucks/wheels, too.
I've got several setups that I use. I've got a Gravity 40 park model, a Powell Stealth, and a G&S 38" flat nose (this board has been altered for park use). All setups are made mobile by Powell Skatepark Formula w/ hardcore hubs.
I prefer Indy 215's for trucks. But, 215's are harder to do 50/50's on because of their width. They aren't as quick-turning as a narrower truck. But, they are very stable at speed. And, they look a little cooler on lapovers.

I ride one of these:-http://bokasmo.com/pages/mall/alva/decks/ (the yellow one) and the Sector 9 'The Nine'. They both rip in the right environment. The Afroman Numbchuck seems widely accepted as a Rad oldskool pool deck too.

Thanks for the encouragement guys! At 34 I feel like the youngin' the room. Now back to my question about boards. Can you all recommend a 36-42 board and hardware for pool skatin'? Those shots of folks tearin' it up on longboards look rad! Much obliged.

A year and half ago, I started back at it. Got my old board out, hit the local park at 6am. Had the place to myself for a couple of hours. Did that each weekend for month. I upgraded my equipment (which I'm still doing), and safety gear, and haven't felt this good in a long time. dan

Gaz,
At 43, I've been a returnee for about 3 years now. This first year was the worst. Ice, ibuprofen, cold brews, and a heating pad have been part of my equipment lately.
As far as the ankle-chompers, I go in the early morning before work to our local park. And, on Saturday and Sunday mornings before the place fills up. Also, try finding other spots to skate, like pipes and pools. I also go find downhill areas to carve and run cones with.
Check out all of your options.

Riding the Afroman Numbchuck with old Indy 169's and 96a (soon to be 98a) ABEC11 No Skoolz. This board is so functional for it's size. 19.75" wheelbase is perfect. Do you miss those functional square tails of the 80's? This is an 8 ply board and rock hard. I am 6', 210 lbs and there is no flex on rock n rolls or any other trick. Afroman just changed the graphics and have the new ones in stock now. Definitely my favorite board.

I just started going to my local skate park myself about 3 months ago with no prior park experience. I had talked to Glenn at www.solidskate.com and he recommended an Afroman Numbchuck (38x9.5) with 166 Indies and 66mm 97a Gravity Street G’s. For me this was an excellent setup to learn on and as I got more experience found that it continued to work really well.

New Skatepark just about ready to open in Berkeley, CA. It's at the corner of Harrison and 5th. It even has a pool. It's supposed to open The beginning of September. Has lights too for night sessions. Take the Gilman St exit off I-80 and go up to 5th street. When you see The North Face, make a left and go 2 blocks. Park is on the left.

I'm back to skating after many years absence. What's a good longer board (36-42) for poolskating? Also is the best way to learn starting at skateparks or just diving right in (pun intended)? thanks.l

Great thoughts there. I have to agree totally. I recently got some PowerPaw 74A wheels for my 9 x 30 pool board, and it's made all the difference! Rough loading dock banks, barely skateable ditches and raw streets are now all available to me! Not to mention the stealth factor. They don't make any noise so you can creep up on people and zoom right by before they even notice. Haven't tried the No Schools yet.

Yes, it's sad about Magic Sk8 Park....sure those after photos are hard to look at...but the memories will last forever....we had some great sessions there this past summer...now a thought for the day...the whole world is a skate park again now that No Skool soft wheels are here....just ride right over potholes, through manhole divits, over cracks, root and frost heaved concrete, pebbles, stones, and sticks, branches, and acorns...ahh, those bastards. This wasn't meant to be a commercial but these wheels open up a lot of terrain that was otherwise tough to ride especially if you don't ollie!Enjoy all!
