Tail drop into the 7 foot end, my tail is about 5 inches long, I put the front foot WAY up near the nose and drop. Once I cross the tranny I scoot my rear foot up to about a foot in front of the rear truck. Pumps like mad, turns like a dream.

i have mostly ridden a sector 9 slalom board with harder wheels to carve parks over the last few years and i am always looking for a way in when its just coping - part slide, part nose push are you sliding in on the pin tail or does it have enough tail to drop in off a coping?

All this talk of more board length is getting my interest! My park and park pool board is a 44" Dregs pintail, it grinds smooth and clean with Randal 150s in both the Clairemont bowl and the new pools at Encinitas. Really, ask Arab, the trick isn't the carve grind, it's the drop in.

The Rebirth of Skateparks promotional DVD includes footage from the 2004 Huntington Beach Basic Bowl competition, the Encinitas Skatepark Grand Opening, and of course The Rebirth of Skateparks trailer. Video is great on the web but better on the big screen. Enjoy!!
Over the past 5 years skateparks in Southern California have been opening on almost a monthly basis giving the swell of new skateboarders a new place to call home. The Rebirth of Skateparks has inspired veteran skateboarders who were part of the first wave of skateparks from the 1970's to start skating again.
Today when you go to a skatepark you will see skaters of all ages ripping it up just like those of us who were involved with the first wave of skateparks. On any given day, at any given skatepark, you are bound to see something special going on whether it be a new kid learning the basics of skateboarding or a seasoned veteran busting out tricks that are blowing away the current generation of skateboarders.
Our film, The Rebirth of Skateparks looks back at the skateparks of the 1970's including the Concrete Wave, Skatopia, Big O, Colton Skate Ranch, Del Mar Skate Ranch, Upland Pipeline, Oasis, and many others. The film will then capture the flavor of the current generation of skateparks that are available to us today in Southern California.
In reality, skateparks are but a small slice of skateboarding and skateboarding culture. However, skateparks always have and always will play a huge part in the world of skateboarding, Skateparks have given us some of the greatest skateboarders of all time including Tony Hawk, Stevie Caballero, Bob Burnquist, Ryan Sheckler, and many others.

I have the Afroman Hustler and the Numbchuck. Both are nice but what I find myself reaching for every time is the Dog Town Skater for Life board. (39"). It's 7 ply (unlike the 8 ply Afromen) and a little bit narrower (9"). I don't know the specific reason but I just like it better. It just looks better and feels lighter maybe? Seems I can throw it around a bit better and with the extra length and reduced width seems more...I don't know....Surfy maybe? Might be worth checkin out. Although at 7 ply it might get a bit soft after a short while. (I've had mine about 3 months with medium/heavy use and it does seem a bit softer in the tail but just barely).

I really like my Comet Proflex Park 36, but it's just slightly narrower than your 9" wide requirement. I'm looking forward to trying the Hustler sometime soon. Skaterbuilt, I thought, had just come out with a 36" model ("Skatercult?")in the last few months, but I don't see it now on their website. I'd like to try one of those, too!

Ok, Just got back from scoping the park out....Didn't make it yesterday cause I got too busy. Today I took a friend to have a second opinion and these are the conclusions we came to
* Good Things* 1) The bowl fricken rips!!!!!!!! 2) You get a nice view of cows grazing in the pasture in the valley. 3) It's nice that the place is as large as it is. 4) The park rangers who were babysitting were actually nice and kindly reminded people to wear their helmets. The best park babysitters I've ever run into.
*Bad things* 1) It is not possible that this park was designed by anyone who can actually skate. I skate street and bowls and everything but the bowl is retarded. 2) There is no flow. Everyone and everything run into each other. 3) I haven't been to a park designed this poorly since I went to Anaheim. 4) A serious crash will soon occur causing a lawsuit due to the design problems. 5) I am waiting to see what happens to the bowl once it gets to be the rainy season as it looks like it's gonna head down the hill and crack when the ground starts shifting.
Like was said above, go for the bowl. Serious jam sessions will be happening there!

What's up guys, Just looking for a few opinions here. My bro who currently rides an "old school" board, is looking to get a park/pool/street longboard around 36"-39" long and around 9" wide. He likes the 36" Alva Caddy that I ride, but he doesn't want to get the same board. Any suggestions of good strong boards with good POP.

Other than the 10' bowl which i really like, the rest of this park is bad. tiny, kinked, "WTF were they thinking" as far as the clover "bowl" and the washboard. The top part wasn't finished yet so noone got to skate it. The tech/flip/ledge set seemed to like that part of the park.
Go there and skate the bowl, nevermind the rest except for warming up.

NEW PARK IN SAN RAFAEL OPENS SATURDAY
|
On 8/13/2004 ERIC 31
wrote in from
United States
(63.202.nnn.nnn)
Check it out guys and gals...a Kevin Thatcher designed park is opening this Saturday in San Rafael (Marin County, Nor Cal). FYI
San Rafael's long-awaited $1.6 million skatepark is ready for prime time. Come Saturday, the park, which is nearly finished, will play host to kids and adult skate enthusiasts.
"It will be about 90 percent complete," San Rafael Community Services Director Carlene McCart said. "What will be left outstanding is landscaping, installing pavement, things the kids don't care about. They care about getting in and skating."
The imminence of the opening already has attracted people to the site. Officials are warning fans to stay away until the big day. Until the park is officially open, the new cement and other infrastructure is still too fragile and could be ruined by unwelcome guests, officials said.
The facility, a 25,000-square-foot, multi-level park designed to cascade down a hillside overlooking the St. Vincent's and Silveira properties, is a long time in the making.
Last fall, wet weather delayed construction of the city and county project at McInnis Park on Smith Ranch Road.
The project resumed this spring, but the ground had not properly dried, further slowing efforts to build the concrete park set in the hillside.
The park's placement, extensive drainage work, the location of underground utilities and the discovery of a tree buried beneath the earth drove up costs and made the job difficult, contractors said.
The work, performed by San Rafael-based Ghilotti Bros. Inc., was challenging mostly because of the steep grade, foreman Mike Alten said.
"Tough job," he said, crediting the use of global positioning equipment to get the job done. "Unforeseen conditions throughout. Details that take a lot of thought. It's just tough access. It's a new twist every day."
Officials said now that the unveiling is near, anticipation is mounting.
"We're really excited," county parks planner Steve Petterle said. "The kids are excited. We have visitors every day."
The park will be open from 9 a.m. to sunset daily. There will be a "zero-tolerance" policy for vandalism at the park, meaning that if it is defaced, it will be shut down, officials said.
Inline skates and skateboards are allowed. Bikes are prohibited, but county officials said they are looking into providing an area for BMX riders somewhere in the county park system.
The park, the county's largest and with varying levels of difficulty, will be able to handle 75 to 100 skaters at a time.
Architect Jonathan Hammond of Davis-based firm Indigo/ Hammond & Playle, with help from local landscape architect Brian Wittenkeller, a former county parks aide, went native with plants, shrubs and trees mimicking the natural oak woodlands of the area, along with natural rock from the area. Reclaimed water keeps the landscaping healthy.
"One of the things we tried to do is get this park so it had a really good ecological fit," Hammond said. "We set this baby so it really fits."
Park designer Kevin J. Thatcher, a professional skater in the 1970s and a founding editor of Thrasher Magazine, stood the other day at the edge of the 10-foot deep end of the main bowl shaped like a figure eight.
He said he's psyched.
"One letter. G (for) G forces," he said. "It's a big, gnarly bowl. A lot of places would be afraid to put in something like that. I can skate it and have fun, but when the real skaters skate it, they'll know."
With easier areas such as the clover bowl, with three intersecting "leaves," and "the warlock," with its volcano in the middle, the park is designed for any age or experience level.
Two paths leading down to the main bowl are an example.
The "gauntlet," which runs along the northern edge of the park, is challenging, while the "nature trail" is a bit tamer, at least in the summer. Come winter, seasonal creek-like drainage running directly through the trail will require skaters to navigate a waterway.
"There's no two square feet of this park that is the same or repeated, and this is important - the variety," Thatcher said.
"Yeah, this is one of the better parks," he said. "I just hope the skaters dig it."

Yes, you are correct, Sasha. The powers (in their stupidity) have decided to move the bowl only 50 feet. They have used various excuses to justify their position. From saying the bowl is temporary (It was a temporary park, but the bowl isn't by any means), that the bowl is too close to the property line, or it's on a sewer line they need access to, or it's just too close to the new appartments that will be built at the QFC (Which the developer has stated, moving the bowl ONLY 50 feet doesn't help them one bit!).
Bottom line, we are rallying the troops for a big bowl bash on the 21st of August. But, I'm a realist, It's most likely going to be destroyed and replaced.

Dan-I read a couple of weeks ago that they had decided to tear it down and build a new one about 500 feet away. Are they stupid or what? Is that what's really going to happen?
Also, to anyone near San Rafael, I hear the park is opening Saturday. Anyone know if that's really the case? Any demos of anything happening that day? Thanx

I just learned that the Ballard bowl will be replaced (meaning destroyed) with a new bowl. If this isn't bad enough, Purkiss Rose has been hired to design the new bowl! How bad is that? Like slap a guy when he's down why don't ya!
IF you haven't been up to skate the Ballard bowl, this will be your last chance. I think the deconstruction starts in Jan. '05.
