Kid's helmets
On 3/11/2003 G7enn wrote in from (195.92.nnn.nnn)

The problem is that our local park is full of 'street' skaters who never wear helmets, even the young ones who show up with their parents. If I wasn't there to make my kids wear helmets, they wouldn't, though to be fair, they never argue or try to remove them. Yet.

Does Nathan ever skate with kids his age who don't wear helmets?

I'm not going to try to argue that i'm right not to enforce helmets in the driveway but I think it'd be counterproductive to try and enforce it now.

Yo Arab-

I will be free all day friday... I'll be at the Howell's house taking photos of ICKs and stuff but if we can slalom then that would be awesome. I don't have a ride to drive anywhere and as a new driver, I'm not about to start cruising around LA. But anyways, if we ca figure out transportation then we can slalom friday. Not sure what Rick's doing... I'll ask him. What did ya have in mind?

Kids and Helmets
On 3/11/2003 G7enn wrote in from (212.35.nnn.nnn)

They do wear helmets all the time they are skating with me at parks or on hills or whatever, to be honest i'm amazed I get away with it because they (or we if vert or steep hills are involved) are often the ones wearing helmets. I don't enforce the helmet rule for messing about in our driveway though, it'd be very difficult with friends who can't even stand on a board getting away without wearing them.

hey Ben-I remember back when you and MSK were talking about running slalom at the park, thats great you guys got a couple teenagers goin? try and bring them to JPL next time. Also you killed me at JPL when you rode Shermans board and increased your time by 3 seconds. See what a good board will do for ya! Ben you have to come to the first FCR race of 2003, it is at Elsinore skatepark, there will be Slalom, Vert, and Street. Crowning of the greatest skateboarder in the world, I think you stand a chance to do well over all.

G7enn-I hope you make yer kids wear helmets, the single most important thing when teaching kids to skate. Nathan has never skated without a helmet in his 8 of 9 years skating. not even just out front when he is messing around!
Its so cool to see kids get out an charge, did you read Fluitts post the other day about his kids? go back and find it if not. its pretty funny.

Hey yall - Arab to. that photo of the two kids wigglin is in the parking lot of the Monrovia park - a few months back we would bust out some cones & boards (with the help of MSK) after the SKATEPARK GATES WERE LOCKED at five oclock. Still can't get them to keep it open longer or even turn on the lights. Pisses me off after workin w/ the city for years to get the park built. Thats Jose and Joey - 13-14yrs old. I'll tell Joey to check this site.

Kids and skating
On 3/10/2003 G7enn wrote in from (212.35.nnn.nnn)

I Spent a large part of this weekend skating with my kids. On saturday morning we visited an indoor park (in Telford UK) with the smallest vert ramp i've seen since the '70s, only about 8.5' high. I took the opportunity to get back on vert (just kickturns...) for the first time in 23 years and was pleasently surprised when Jack (8), who's spent most of the last few months working on newschool tricks, got in the pipe and pumped himself up to the vert. At one point we were actually competing to see who could get highest.

Yesterday evening we were messing about in a car-park. Mikey (5), who's been trying to skate for six months or so but has only recently got to the tic-tac stage, took a break from trying to copy his brother's ollies and started turning the very loose slalom board i've set up for the kids, from side to side. This, and encouragement from Jack, took him through a confidence barrier and I was amazed to see him ride down a ramp between two floors and skate beyond his own running speed. He was incredibly pround of himself.

The loose trucks illustrate a point that I try to make to every parent I see with a kid who can't master the basics. Loosen the trucks, you can't learn to ride a board with trucks that don't turn. The big problem is of course when the board is very cheap and the bushings turn out to be made from the same plastic as the rest of the truck. Some parents don't like being told that bushings that will make the board ridable by a small kid cost almost as much as they paid for the whole setup...

Kids and Ladies

Sascha- No dispespect to Terri and Judy, but competing against older women like you do in street contest is one thing, but those older women could still be Terri and Judys daughters! And Terri and Judy could kick those womens butts in slalom!!!!!

Glad you and Bruce made it down to ride with the Bay Area crew, thats a great group of racers! Fish is one of the best all around skaters I know. I hope he comes to Elsinore to do all 3 events, he will do good, as would Chicken, Hackett, Olson, Holl. I'll bet Patch is comin!!!
he could win the Street and Vert, and probably do good in slalom.

I want to thank you Ladies for dropping in this weekend, I guess the rest of the kids were out playin!

How refreshing to see 2 days of clean fun here.

please feel free to drop in anytime, but its all yours and the Kids on weekends.

Where are all the kiddos today????? I would love to hear what you've all been up to this weekend. I practiced at GGPark today with Fish, the Comet Crew, MM, Norski, etc...JAMMIN"
We were takin that hill down!!!!!!! So much fun. Can't wait till next time.

Terry thanks for all the info. I'll check out the course when I get there and then decide what to do. Hills don't really bother me, so I guess I'd better get on practicing those fast turns....Also, I do have to compete against women a lot older than me all the time. I'm sure I could do it again if I had to. But I thought it would be nice to finally be with girls around my age for a change. Oh well, Guess I will just have to step it up again.

Best of wishes for a smooth operatin at Paso. I think you have a good idea and it's nice to see you encouraging others to skate. I have been trying to talk every guy I skate with into getting into slalom, but it's always the same. No money and their parents don't think it's important to support them. Sad. But- I do try to encourage them all the time.

Terry,
Thanks for the post. I don't have your email at home so sorry for the world wide broadcast. Thanks for organizing a race for the women and kids. I'll help you if I don't have both my kids to worry about that day.

By the way I like the pic's of those kids. I'd like them even better if they wore helmets of any kind.

Girls skate race
On 3/9/2003 T.Brown/Benko wrote in from (32.102.nnn.nnn)

Sasha, Do you have an e-mail? Think of the female divisions this way. One is for advanced (Pro)and the other is for the not so advanced (Amatuer). There are not enough females yet to have more age divisions in the amatuer division. My first race was when I was 15 and I raced against women of all ages. There is a huge advantage to skating at 15 physically. Take advantage of that. Remember the goal is to gain experience, to have fun, get more girls and kids to skate. The class of Amateur Women could be Amateur Female. No you are not a "Woman" at 15 in our society, but your a Woman skateboarder. You can skate Pro or you can skate Amateur, the choice is yours.
If you have more questions, e-mail me if you can.
Best regards,
Terry

slalom practice
On 3/8/2003 Sasha wrote in from (166.90.nnn.nnn)

I had a great day practicing slalom with Gary Holl, HC, Julius, Norski, John, the lovely Judi, and more at the Shoreline. It was a blast!! Thanks to all of you for making it a great day. On to GGPark tommorrow. Any takers?

Terry-thank you for the clarification. Still seems a bit wierd to me. I mean, I'm in 9th grade, can't drive yet, can't vote, can't drink, but I'm a woman. Interesting....So for further clarification, does that the no age limit you posted mean that the girls could therefore compete in the amature women's group as well as the girls group?

Woman and Kids Race
On 3/8/2003 Terry wrote in from (32.102.nnn.nnn)

Sasha,
Sorry I was not clear, but you would could race in the "Amateur Women's" division which has no age limit. You will not be racing the experienced Women as they will be in the Pro Women division. You will rock in the Amateur Women's division. This will give you more experience so soon you can charge the Pro Division. Hope to see you in the event and bring your girlfriends.

To summarize. The new divisions are 1)Kids 14 and under either sex. 2) Amateur Women (Girls, Ladies,Skatechicks, whatever)any age. 3) Pro Women any age. Catagories 1 and 2 race single lane, lower on the hill. Catagory 3 races on the Pro/Open Course.

We can add catagories as we get more kids/women signing up. Judi, Sharon, Isabelle, Sandy will be Pro. New racers like Paul Dunn's wife Michelle will be in the Amateur division. Molly, what about you? I've got two newbies here that are dying to race, but are not ready for the big courses. They are 19 and 21. It's for fun and it should be a blast!

As an afterthought, I was wondering where I actually fit in all this. I mean in reality since when is it fair to have a 15 year old who has only done one slalom contest to have to compete against you ladies who have been doing this for decades? Since I appear to be the only in between girl, Does that mean you will be willing to make a seperate category just for me or do you plan to reconside the girl age limit?
