Thanx to everybody for their thoughts and advice on safety, Kids are really important, It is the responsibilty of us as parents to insure our kids health and safety.
Experiance is the best advice, learning from your mistakes can be a hefty price to pay!
Bink-What are the right wheels? whatever I'm not riding useally!
G7enn-You have a responsibilty to take care of your kids. all it takes is one stupid fall.
Patio-please feel free to tell your story here for those that dont know it. you were a big boy who knew better, didnt you? thanx for sharing.
MSK-Look at Termite skateboards, kids 10 and under riding rails without helmets, Some parents will do anything to see that their kids will become famous. What a joke! and there is people that want to shoot me for being the parent of an all star little leaguer, I think these parents should be jailed for child neglect and abuse. There is a law in california that any kid under 18 yrs of age has to where a helmet when skateboarding, skating, bladeing, biking, scootering etc. What are these parents teaching their kids? that its OK to endager yourself and that it is OK to break the law.
Sasha-I use to think it was weird when I first seen you wearing soccer shin guards? Then I realized how cool they were to beable to learn flip tricks without the pain of board rails beating on your shins all day, I dont know how many times I have had to pick Nathan up Crying from taking one to the shins.
Wes-Nathan got takin out by a rollerblader at the skatepark and recieved a broken collar bone, he was also knocked out for a moment from the collision and the impact from hitting his head on the concrete, Imagine this: 70 pound 8 yr old full blast down a 10ft roll in, 150 pound 16 yr old blader full blast down a 8ft transition ramp, they get introduced in the middle, NOT A PRETTY SITE!!!!!! (Bladers arnt a pretty site to begin with)
Davebuilt-Can I have my own forum on your site?
Stevie-Good on ya! I dont let my kid play on the freeway because its not safe, neither is skateboarding, biking etc without a helmet for kids. He doesnt go to bat without a helmet on, why should he skate without one?
Dan-I have never seen a picture of you without a helmet, good example.
Ben-You get hurt even wearing your gear! even I know that, anybody that skates as big and bad as you do is destined to go down, I went to the doctors yesterday for my back, elbow and thigh yesterday, I havent been able to skate but about 5-6 times since Oct because I have been in so much pain, I wanted to heal up for the 2003 season, well I didnt heal and the season is upon us, I figured I better at least see the doc and maybe I could get some relief, I told him I race skateboards and I have a race in 2 weeks and I need to get in better shape, He told me I'm not 20 anymore and I shouldnt be trying to do the things I did then, I just looked at him and wanted to say FU! This is what I have done for almost 40 yrs, its my exercise, its what I do for fun, damn its not like I'm some old man like Cliff Coleman or something!!!!
Mike-It aint easy being the mean dad, Father knows best though! Did you ever pay him back?
MG-Aggreed!!!!!!!
HAMM-"He's only going to remember you couldn't go out and play with him." That is scary but true, I cant run, my legs just arnt there, I have had problems with my whole body the last couple years, it hurts that I cant do some things with my boy!
Judi-Sorry to hear of the unfortunate accident, it only takes one time! Thanx for hooking Sasha up! I think she is gonna rule the Womens Am div this year. lookout because she could be nipping at the pro womens heels real fast. have you seen her skate street? When I was the team manager of Webb Trucks, I put her on the team site unseen from the good word of a close friend, He was right! and we had to of the hottest upcoming girl street skaters on our team. Mom Nicole is as cool as they come for supporting her daughter in what she wants to do, and Sasha is one smart girl for having the brains to wear her helmet!, I was bummed when I seen that the other girl on our team isnt wearing a helmet in pro Competition anymore, I was so stoked that a 13 yr old Pro Female who finished 3rd overall in the world last year was one of about 3 girls that wore a helmet, Now she has caved to the peer pressure and doesnt wear it anymore, I thought, what a great example to all the little girls out there that want to become a pro skater.
Glenn-doing it for others! how selfless of you.
Dokie-I had a 3 legged dog named Tripod, he could out run any dog around, less friction I guess?
Brady-Well since you asked for it! Again you have shown your ignorance and stupidity, You dont get the whole slalom thing, you dont get this forum thing, you just dont have a clue do you?
Maybe you should have worn your helmet, then you wouldnt be such a Moron!
You have bought more slalom equipment then anybody, you would think you would have learned to slalom by now, I guess I have been wrong all along, Equipment has nothing to do with it!, its all in the rider!!!!!!!

"Brady" just go away. Didn't you read these recent Serious and Heartfelt posts? A FATHER JUST DIED YESTURDAY leaving a young wife and child! Who cares if this discussion is in the proper category for your pseudo-life sitting in a chair at a computer. Sasha, I felt your post regarding this stupid trend about it being "uncool" to wear a helmut was courageous and full of the truth. And then that HORRIFIC death resulting from a helmutless head injury made it so much more poignant. Ben

What happened to this forum?
There`s already 3 forums that deal with safety equip, riding safety, and Dr Daves head Injury forum. Most of these posts might do good over there.
I asked early on what this forum was all about...and no solid answer. Especially with the title "The Gong Show with Arab", would one think it would be spot where the kooks could post and see the reaction from the audience just like the original "Gong Show". Or maybe a spot where A-rab and his attendees (protagonists and antagonists) would have a free place to roam? Heck with all the stirring of the pot that A-rab has done in the past, the latter just seems like a natural for a Gong Show.
If it was to promote slalom or longboarding to youngsters, the title surely doesn`t fit.
perplexed...Brady (here is where Eric takes another dig at me and maybe put this forum in gear)

that news is sad.
I bought a couple giros from bike nashbar online today. they have some older extra small ones on sale which should fit my kids. great prices.
if they have a couple helmets to choose from maybe they will find one they like and wear it.
I actually wear a 1990 giro hammerhead for skating. I guess it's one of those you have to chuck after an impact but it's so lightweight and comfy.

Sasha is a girl who rips! Who I just happen to have a new helmet for. (I'll be bringing it on Sunday.) Yesterday one of our team riders on the Giro bike team died from a head injury. He wasn't wearing his helmet. He left a young wife and child behind. As far as helmets go back in the late 70's and early 80's you couldn't be filmed or photographed in any commericals or ads without wearing a helmet. We went backwards again go figure.

I guess one comeback to people busting on your pads or helmets is, "nobody loves you do they?".
sasha, I didn't see you at vans on the weekend. in case you out skated us too much I had a lot of teasing remarks prepared about Tony T, to try to slow you down and put you off your game. If I have to race you this weekend I am busting them out tho! but I won't make fun of any protective gear, ever.
If I ever race arab I am going ask him why he flirts with brady so much. they are so cute.

Sasha, That's just an epic post. You are my new hero! I can't wait to meet you. You are one level-headed chick!
As a parent of a 5yr old. I wear helmet and pads for my son. Not just to set an example for him, but because of the quality of our relationship. Nothing sucks worse than telling your son, "I can't chase you, my ankle is sprained", "I can't piggyback you, my back is all roadrashed", etc, etc. It sucks and in 20years your kid is not going to remember your ankle was sprained, he's only going to remember you couldn't go out and play with him. Thats all the incentive I need.

i will have to agree with dan. Dad pays the bills, kid wears the pads. i have broken my leg three times, suffered various internal injuries, and blown a knee and a half out during my teenage career as a ski racer. me and my father had the same altercations regarding proper safety protection when skating and freeskiing. he showed me the bill from my first broken leg. $6,000 out of his pocket even with insurance. when i thought about how long it would take me to pay that one back, we came to an agreement.

Who has skated for any period of time and NOT gotten hurt? Know of anybody? When i was a kid I broke wrists, ripped knees, shins, ankles, hands, chin, got concussions, stitches in face & head, bruised *& locked-up hips, tailbone, shoulders. Hospital umpteen times.
Since I restarted skating as a grownup I can't risk injury. I've hurt my hand and ankle only, minor injuries. Wear good quality gear. My kids have lots of pads and good helmets and have gotten used to wearing them from day 1. They don't have a choice
So who HASN'T gotten injured that has skated for any length of time? Anyone?

Dan,
Although it's impossible to argue with teen logic, there is sort of a way to counter your son's assertion he'll never get hurt. It's the same way I feel about driving in the snow in South Carolina. Sure, I'm an ok ice driver and I know not to slam on the brakes or hit the accelerator too hard. Simple stuff.
The only problem is the OTHER IDIOTS who have no idea what they're doing. They are the reason I never get out in my car if there's even an hint of white stuff. Same is true with your son's skateboarding. Sure, he think's his skill at sliding, crashing, recovery and such will protect him from slamming his noggin on the concrete. But what about the newbie who has no clue that loses complete control and slams into your son at 15 mph when no one is looking? What's going to protect your son when that impossible scenario becomes reality? Maybe things have changed a lot since I was skating parks in the '70s, but what always scared me more than anything were things like loose boards rolling around and a general sense of nobody really paying. That's a recipe for disaster.
Plus, I'm sure there's still some jerk out there who thinks they are god's gift to skateboarding and decides they can snake anyone in any bowl or any ramp. What usually happens is a classic demonstration of the physical law of nature that demands no two objects can occupy the same space at the same time. Something has to give. It's usually the skull.
Sure, your son is a good skateboarder. Is he absolutely certain, though, that he's surrounded by nothing but excellent skateboarders? For some strange reason, I doubt that will ever be the case.

I have a 17 year old. He doesn't like to wear his helmet, at all. Although, I tell him all the time, that if he skates, he needs a helmet (even sliding rails in the driveway). We've been nose to nose at the skatepark one time. And I was bound and determined to embarass the heck out of him, if he didn't wear it.
His basic arguement is that he's not going to get hurt, and that all these people who have gotten hurt (I read him Patio's story) without a helmet, that wouldn't ever happen to him he says. I told him various stories, and explained what can happen with head tramma, bla bla bla. He doesn't care. So now, I say, here's the deal. You get hurt, and I have to pay the bills, therefore, you wear the helmet. So far that works. Whew! (parenting wears me out!)
Pads keep you on the board. Helmets save your life.

Regarding the pads and helmets topic. I can't tell you how many times I've been told by my sponsors that I should not wear pads or helmets in photos or contests for street because it is not "cool". Me and Lyn-z are now the only two people at the Triple Crowns (guys or girls) that wear helmets on the street course.
Talk about retarded. I did a Swatch Youth Development program thingi with Andy MacDonald in 2000 and he was preaching to us kids about always wearing out safety gear when we skate, but guess what? He only wears it when it skates vert not street.
I have been frowned upon by a lot of people and made fun of by Slap magazine for wearing pads. But I don't care. I have hit my head enough times that I'm not going to skate without my helmet. I have kind of compromised with them by not wearing pads when I skate street, but I wear them when I skate pools. One concussion while I was WEARING my helmet was enough to convince me that safety is first regardless of what the media and companies are pushing....Wear you helmets!!!!!!

The biggest problem with getting kids to wear helmets is that virtually the entire mainstream skate media/industry is against them. I actually saw a recent ad in one of the magazines that said "We don't condone the use of helmets". Great message for the kids...
