gloves and guards?
On 9/7/2004 boyd wrote in from Australia  (203.23.nnn.nnn)

hey there, i have made some slider pads on straps to go over the wrist guards and some slider gloves , which don't really
i really prefer the gloves but i am always cautious about skating without wrist guards, (up to 3 wrists now)
i am reading a few people saying the gloves are safer for non transition, any thoughts on this?

Hey all you Stoppers... how's it going here? Myrran... quit picking on these guys and get back to work!

Don't think I can make it to the S.F. Grav Fest, dammit, but I'm rootin' for you and David Price! (if he can mange to get there).

I envy you getting new leathers... My leathers are from hell... At the Vail downhill, I realized that I had trouble pushing, crouching, tucking and everything else. They're the evilest leathers I ever seen! No wonder I never wear them.

ObStopItem... When I need to stop fast I just head for something solid... that stops you the fasterest. That BMW I hit head on at Tunnel Road was REAL solid! I showed that car a thing or two... (mostly my ribs, hip and knee... good thing it knocked me out, otherwise I would have had too much terror-time).

Yo ICE, MJ and my other bros.

I'm back in school full time this year, so it's going to be a real panic getting time to ride. My big night until mid-December is TUESDAY night. I can get over there any time after 2pm though, so if we can get an early start all the better. I work at 7am the next morning so it will be hard to skate past 10pm. All other skating for me will be quickie hit-and-run stuff around Santa Cruz.

So TUESDAY, TUESDAY, TUESDAY is the call... I'll probably try to do slalom until after the Worlds the second weekend in October. Then it's time for sliding, parks and downhilling!

Wu, Everett and the ICEman...
On 9/3/2004 Miko wrote in from United States  (69.19.nnn.nnn)

Wow guys... my ears were burning, then I pop in here and see you all talkin' trash!

ICEman speaks the truth about Brittany and Melody, (the two hot babes of slider hills), in Redwood City, CA. Unbelieveable surface and grade. Brittany is the shorter and *safer* of the two, but Melody is amazing. Caveats... Melody charges past many driveways, through at least 3 stop signs (w/fairly visible side entry, so you CAN anticipate stopping). It seems to go on and on, but might be around 1.5 miles long. Check them both out at your own risk and stoke.

Everett! No car in Santa B? Ouch... Make friends with someone with wheels quick! You'll probably laugh to learn that I'm shopping for an ideal deck for sliding like you guys. I think I'm looking for something with a w/b between 19"-24", any suggestions? I figure it's about time, and you can do it on shorter hills etc.

Steven Wu is a young buck dying to break into the speedboarding scene, and with a couple races (and placings) under his belt, and a LOT of SoCal riding with the big boys, he's getting very fast. I'm stoked he's in Santa Cruz... he's probably going to be dragging me out for a good deal of high-speed action this year. We plan to develop the Bonny Doon Road run and get it WIRED. It has to be a 50+ hill once you've got everthing dialed. It's that left at the bottom that scares me. What's up with the *legal* probs? Email me offline... Benji misses you bro.

Hey steven,

HaHa, thats so funny that you know Miko. I remebering him talking about you non stop so i figured you have to be pretty good. Well Miko always said that you learned very quick and went pretty fast so knowing what a nut he is i would have to believe him. Dude i went to UCSC years ago, saying that like i am old or something, but didn't get into the whole slalom/speedboard/downhill scheme that they did. I mean ask miko i was about twice to three times slower then they would but look at the setups. My oldschool Santa Cruz 31" with 61mm 99a to their comet and ick stick boards with gumballs, flashbacks, and 3dms. a bit different you might say, but i sitll was stoked that i got to skat with miko so much, he does bust his ass for speed and i do it for sliding. Unfortunatly do to my current eco-saving mentality (and mounting legal matters) I don't have a car nor a lisence. I mean Ventura is not that far away but the hills here are way different. you have a super small road with traffic doing 40 and you got to do what you can. having this going-straight-down-a-hill diability i just slide all over. other lane, in the middle, under bumpers of cars in front of me; whatevas. but i would love to skate with you, especially after Mikos hype-he speaks very highly of you.

so let me get my situation in gear and i will be able to give you a better answer to that in a bit. but am so down to slide in the l.a. area, just got to coordinate.

and i'll ask for the billionth time. does anyone besides me practice the two hand toeside w/one footed bluntslide. or am i just beating a dead horse more dead?

hey slider look up the post that is titled "slides gloves" and check that out from there. http://www.geocities.com/toothlesslongboards/page25.html is a site that will show you how to make the woodbacked gloves. these are great. they work and will teach you the fundamentals of sliding. are they the top. no. the best are the ones on the aforementioned "slides gloves" post, as far as plastic and epoxy go. but the website i gave on this post will show you the basics of glove design and you can take it from there. its all up to you......and have fun!

NC LBer

yeah thats way rad bombing in front of the kiddies. i do get some of the same looks myself. not really having the street, pool, park, or vert style the kids at the skatepark right next door to my house give me the oddest looks. especially cause i mainly do the whole bonless and 360 slide thing but whatever. i mean those disciplines are very technical but i surf so doing flip tricks is not helping me on a 9'4". don't get me wrong the santa cruz kids like cj, tanner, and carl are all boosting airs on thier lonboards which is phenomenal to me. especially cause so many shortboarders say that we can't do airs. trust me doing it on pavement is way easier. surfing throws so many more variables in the mix that boosting is gnarly. but all in all most of us longboarders who surf that way, i guess you would call that the more progressive style, translate it to our skating. i mean why not. powerslides from skating were just huge rail burried hacks on a wave. and after seeing guys like cliff do sliding i went from there. and its super fun. although street sliding, or downhill freestyle sliding (whatever you want to call it) doesn't have as much of a direct translation to surfing but it helps in situations you wouldn't think so. thats why its good to ride everything. it makes you better. and being on a longboard is a very good start if you're already pulling some fatty slides. i know a bunch of my buddies who snowboard want to get into it as well.

so keep it up. bomb them hills. slide them wheels. and stay safe. and keep surfing. i mean it skating didn't originate from surfing but it was quikly adapted by it as another medium to enhance balance and timing. so whatevas to those kids who don't understand. besides most of them get out of the sport once thier friends say its not cool. keep it real.

oh i would order that plastic 1/2inch thick. it seems to be better.

The other night was funny. The kid wasn't even a skater. The skaters he hangs out with are pretty cool. They basically just look at us like we are crazy, especially when they see this 41 year old do pulling a major power slide at speed on parking lot ramp and then bombing across the intersection and tearing through another parking lot. Surf styling it all the way!

Thanks for all of the info. I am going to be making gloves soon!

whats up NC Longboarder

man i read a post of yours on another forum and i was laguhing my ass off. the one about kids hassling about the surf style. its funny cause just moved from santa cruz (surfings original capital in CA) to ventura 300 miles south, which is also on the coast. the thing is people always seemed very positive about my style which HC says is more of the surf style. sorry that they were hating like that. i mean i am 22 but i still slap around the groms that like to talk s#@!. overhere most of these kids surf as well so i tell them if they want to challenge me to surfing good luck. not to be cocky but its life to me, i have been doing it since i was twelve. which gives me some clout to say i really don't suck :) so beleive me when i say surf style is cool no matter where you are.

the part you are looking for from mcmaster.com is 8765k32. its ultra high molecular weight plastic with a rubber backing of neoprene to bond to other rubber or cloth surfaces. its about $22.87 for a l'x1' peice which should give you more then you would need. 66159A13 ($11.43)is a good epoxy adhesive that will give you a bit more stability then typical neoprene glue which is more flexible since its primarily designed for wetsuits that need to bend. you can use acrylic bonds if you want but they are not as stable. the impact resistance is found to be significanlty higher in epoxys. hence thats why surftech uses them for their boards, light and strong. for the aforementioned part number you might need the applicator gun as well wich would cost you more, an additional $20 duckets.

page 3166 of mcmaster.com's website will give you all of the information on this but that rubber backed 8765K32 UHMW plastic is the way to go. i mean i use kitchen cutting boards at the moment cause i just have the luxury that they are comming out of my ear but they are not the best! its just something you can whip up out of any hardware store but the only thing that will cause is a surplus to be owned by you because they wear too much. trust me. UHMW is the best bar none. you can get increased stregnth with those but the rubber backed is the best for direct glueing to your gloves. if you are useing the woodbacked glove system with screws into the plastic then there are the static disapative uhmw and the TIVAR, which is for super high temperatures. But these are really dense so you might need power tools to drill them in.

but i still recommend the rubberbacked because it will give you a slight extra padding while being able to glue instead of bolt. and this will cause creative shapes to form. i mean you could cut them all and have just a palm puck and individual finger pucks if you do it right. but its all up to you. all of the part numbers i have mentioned are for their site only, i beleive, so just type them in on the search and you will get it all.

these are all alternatives, better in my opinion, then just roughing up the leather and plastic and trying to apply it from there. i mean these things cause badass tricks and can get you out of a sketchy situation so why not invest in your safety? just like a helmet and pads right.

and let your glue sit overnight at least to completly harden. its better in the long run.

Slide Gloves
On 9/1/2004 Olin wrote in from United States  (198.81.nnn.nnn)

I make my slide gloves by connecting Seaboard to basic gardening gloves using Gorilla Glue. Seaboard is a very hard plastic that they only sell at Tap Plastic (I think). They sell it 4x4 inches and 1 inch thick which is perfect. The guy at the store told me that no glue would stick to it, but, if you rough up the side you glue to the leather a lot the glue will bind the two together. To rough the plastic up i use a saw and cut 15 deep rivits in the plastic and then use a file to rough it up even more. It does take a while to perfect the art of making these gloves but it is well worth it. I learned of this technique from Patrick Rizzo, JM Duran and, Noah Sakamoto(Some of the best sliders!) I have five friends that use this technique and the gloves usually last 6 months of heavy sliding.

dude i dont know who told you that one but it is pretty wrong to say the least. sergio can flat spot his wheels going 30-35 like its no ones business. it all has to do with rotation of your wheel in respect to what angle you are sliding. for example, sergio does a lot of those laybacks but if you do that for about 35-40 feet you wheels are bye bye. its just a fact. the only factor speed has is how fast they wear. you go slow you can wear them pretty good. but if your going 40 and do a slide with out a pendulum,360, or some angle in it your wheels are done period.

north carolina longboarder just ask the guys at mcmaster.com they would know cause they sell all of that plastic so if they don't carry something i am sure they would know the company who would

Slide Glove Adhesive?
On 9/1/2004 North Carolina Longboarder wrote in from United States  (63.167.nnn.nnn)

Sliders and Slide Masters: I am looking for suggestions on the best adhesive to connect slide pads to leather gloves. Any suggestions out there?
I have purchased a couple of different brands of slide gloves including Bozi's and the pads themselves are good but the fingertips are not holding up. I want to make my own using military leather gloves. Any other suggestions would be great. I wear my slide gloves for almost all types of road skating with the exception of the bowl/ramp riding. My biggest use for my gloves is for scrubbing off speed in hard switchback carves on some of the big hills we run, hard heal side and toe side turns, and for power sliding. I am big skater so the gloves will have to tolerate some heavy pressure.

Thanks for the suggestions...post them or drop me an e-mail.

to all the sergio slider haters,

do i say they are "poop" no. but i have said it before and i will say it again. with those wheels most people tend to go rediculous with their slides. so much so that they over throw slides and come to complete stops not knowing how to control them. its hard. the wheels are super hard for a reason so don't get too discouraged about them. its just that whole human error thing that comes into mind. you get wheels that are gnarliest and you yourself start to do some s#@! that will blow your mind. its not uncommon to learn a completly new slide every time you skate with those wheels.

and i think people like olin are right. you get too carried away so mix up the slides. doing colemans all day is fun but its kind of pointless for your wheels. do some toesides. i mean you can use one or two hands throw a blunt slide in there for variety if you want to but the point is to mix it up. 360s are a plus and so are fakie slides. so f#@! why not try it. i mean doing different things are going to make you a more versatile skater so you really have nothing to loose. if you are running good bearings (and i will just promote oust on that one) and really watching your slides and mixing it up you shouldn't have a problem. but if not don't blame the wheels. however, if you have done all of that and it still happens then hey you have a valid opinion and i can't take anything away from that argument. its just most of us don't do it all. but hey what do i know.

and cliff the aforementioned comment was not trying to take away from what you do. i mean i bow down to the master and thats just that. hope oz treats you well. stay safe.
