riser and truck set up
On 9/19/2005 Jason Bakes wrote in from Canada  (24.207.nnn.nnn)

Hey Cliff, this is Bakes from British Columbia.I just stepped in from building some decks,I would like to send some pics to get your thoughts, but not ready to go public.I was wondering if you had some prefured truck and riser set ups, particulary for sliding.I biult some pretty wild aluminium decks my best yet a rigid down hill racer. The deck sits lower than the trucks pivot point, with my old school medium hite 11 1/2 inch wide trackers its stable as hell. The rear of the deck turns twice as hard front,I broke into my first controlled slide last night and was stoked. If you have a e-mail thats not public I would love to send some pics.Send some thoughts on what set ups you like,in return i'll custom biuld you a deck to your liking.I know your old school, but you will like what im mixing for the new. p.s Your truly skin doner #1

Hello Matt

Ghooste is right. But You can slide any board. The longer, the harder to throw around.
Don't know what board You're riding. I started to slide on a 44" lush bahari with Flashbacks 78a. Thats kind of heavy to slide, but once You get it, it's easy. I'll change now to a gravity 39" with two kicktails and harder wheels, to have mor fun.
Take a look at the gravityboard.com homepage. You'll find a lot of sliding there. See Sergio Yuppie, this guy is nuts. He uses about 1 to 5 set of wheels for a single sliding session.

Hey Matt
On 9/16/2005 The Ghooste wrote in from United Kingdom  (193.113.nnn.nnn)

Hey there, couldnt help butting in on this one! Go for a board with the wheelbase about the width of your shoulders, it is all preference tho, go for one with a concave and possibly double kicks. Wheels should be as hard as it comes/ish 90a+ and if they're 66mm or bigger you'll easily get enough speed to slide. Randals are perfect but you might want to flip the hangers to get them lower as the lower the set up the easier it is. Enjoy man, and welcome to a world of safty where you can push the envelope and still walk away afterwards!!

wheels for sliding
On 9/16/2005 yoyo schulz wrote in from Germany  (195.243.nnn.nnn)

I just recently built myself some slide gloves and sliding is so cool...and FUN!
So far I just took my wide street deck (8.25x32) with some loosened trucks and put some old worn wheels on.
With the old, hard wheels, you can learn to slide without spending a lot of $$.
Just gotta find a steeper hill after learning the basics on a flat/moderate steep hill.
The footage in one of the old Powell vids was very inspiring.....

Learning to stop
On 9/15/2005 Matt wrote in from United States  (24.180.nnn.nnn)

Hey Cliff,

I do a lot of downhill skating but I'm at the point where its getting way to dangerous to bomb hills without knowing how to stop. I went and talked to Big John at CCS in San Luis and he recommended I get a new board to learn to slide on and pointed me to you to figure out what kind to get.

Here's my question: I'm about 6'2" 170lbs, so what should the wheelbase be on the board? Can you recommend any brands or places to look? How big and how hard should the wheels be? Any recommendations on where to get those? I've got a pair of 180 Randal R-II's, will those be alright for trucks?

My plan is to make a board so that I can learn to slide and be able to apply those skills to my longer downhill board. Any info you could give me would be awesome, thanks.

Yeah man, the only way is to change your slides and pendulum when you see or hear a flatspot comming. dont slide with board at 90' to the direction of travel

How to remove flatspots
On 9/13/2005 Derik wrote in from Germany  (193.7.nnn.nnn)

Morning Julien,

I will try that. Does anybody of You sliders have a good method to remove the flatspots? I thought about screwing the wheel on a drill and grinding it.

Nice ride!

learning slides
On 9/12/2005 Julien wrote in from United States  (129.133.nnn.nnn)

hey man,
if your learning to slide and are finding that your wheels are too grippy on dry stuff then you might want to invest in some harder wheels. This makes the board less fun to ride around on (you'll lose the plush feel of a soft wheel) but it will be much easier to break into a slide. I would say just go to a skateshop and buy the biggest blank wheels they have (should be under $20) . That way you can get the hang of it first and not have to worry about chunking or flatspotting your nice longboard wheels.

Sliding on wet roads
On 9/12/2005 Cliff Coleman wrote in from United States  (68.127.nnn.nnn)

Derik,

Don't learn to slide on wet roads! Any kind of turn or stand-up slide on wet roads is dangerous. Crouching slides are not as big of a problem after a skater has learned to slide on dry roads. Then after learning a decent set of slides, many choose to slide on wet roads. The risk factor goes up, but it can be done safely doing only hands down slides. It will ruin your bearings however and your slides will be about 2 1/2 times the normal length.

Sliding on a wet road?
On 9/12/2005 Derik wrote in from Germany  (193.7.nnn.nnn)

Hello Cliff,

Is it a good Idea to start liding on a wet road? I had the Idea, because I thought than I then could slide with less speed.

(Saw You in gravity flow, hope I'll be in Your shape at 55)

Best regards

Derik

i grew up in ob so theres to many to say, but cabrillo elementry is alright for a good bank but as far as downhill,1 hill st, 2 newport st, if you look around from right to left there are alot on good hills+ they all have alleys!!!
if you go to robb field sk8park, get in shape first cause that place will ware you out. theres so much flat bottom that you have to pump really hard. poway huh, my dad sold most of the houses at sunrise ranch, oh ya you know were snoppy's rock is at. there used to be devil worshiper's that would do some weird s#@! up there. so happy hunting and bring your helmet, i have lost some friends on those hills!

Jared

Jared,

A good deck would be wood, long enough to accomodate a shoulder width stance and have a kick at both the nose and tail. stay away from flexy decks for the very reasons you mentioned.

Whats a good Slide deck
On 9/6/2005 Jared wrote in from United States  (66.75.nnn.nnn)

I was wondering a good deck for sliding i right now ride a S9 Cosmic trylam but i find the flex makes the wheel base change and makes slides less predictable, so can any one suggest a good deck?

Footage
On 9/5/2005 Cliff Coleman wrote in from United States  (68.127.nnn.nnn)

Nick,

When my foot was finally diganosed as broken, the Dr. at the County clinic said, "Yes Mr. Coleman, the foot is broken but it would be more dangerous to take it out than leave it. So have a good day." He didn't even show me the x-rays? This is the state of our medical system in the USA. If a person has great medical coverage, then they can try for a better fix/result, medically. Now if a Dr. out there thought that fixing my foot pro-bono would be good publicity for their practice, then I would be happy to try and fix my foot. Otherwise, I grin and bear it. Why not enjoy myself as much as I can.

Cliff Coleman

P.S. Watch me deal with the foot and race anyway at this years World Championships of Slalom Skateboard Racing! It's one week away. I'm really looking forward to it.
