I found out the hard way that the Gravity slide gloves are not as good as I had hoped they would be. I was tring out a new bike trail that runs thru a park. First lesson I learned was to know your run, it was alot steeper than it appeared and has some serious doglegs. I was tring for a hard turn, threw out my hand and had two of the velcroed pucks ripped right off, this left the fingers without pucks and this tore up the velcro and opened up the index finger.I had just bought them that morning needless to say I was very disapointed. I think I'll go back to tring to make my own.

Chris,
Come on down to the Slide Fest and bring as many friends as you want! Seriously, you don't have to ask for permission to watch. The following day, Sunday, will be a great Jam Session also.

Barton and Jestah,
I love to travel! My next trip is to San Diego, CA for the Gravity Slide Fest. Then in January, I plan to go to Brazil for about a month. Later I will probably return to the UK for another visit.
I have been to Australia, twice. Tazmania, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Darwin and both the Sunshine and Gold Coasts. I have also been to Okinawa.
I hope to someday make it to New Zealand! It takes more cash than I have at the moment :(
Regarding skate specs for sliding, I'm 6'1". I like a 36" deck with 150 trucks and a deck width to match the truck width with wheels mounted. A twin kick is nice, but a single kick is a must for me at the minimum. If I can get the double kick, then I do. I like hard rock maple for my decks and no flex or camber. When sliding, the deck will flex if not stiff and I don't want that! I like to be the factor determining how much my deck slides and how it reacts when I'm exiting a slide. I would say to try wheels in the 90 t0 100 durometer range for tricks and softer wheels if you plan to skate for longer distances.
Good Luck, Cliff Coleman

Gloves for start ramps

For all of you who wish to race from start ramps and still want slider gloves, make your own pucks or modify the ones that come with the gloves of your choice. Test them and then size them to fit, the pucks that is. I don't use finger pucks when I race from ramps. Be carefull if you choose not to use the finger pucks. If your gloves have Velcro to attach the pucks, and you don't use the finger pucks, then you can, and might slide on the unprotected surface of the Velcro and it won't work well after it becomes worn.
Slider Gloves still have a ways to go before the perfert gloves are introduced. At the moment, and also the choice for me is Timeship gloves. Yes Joe, I did recieve the new gloves. Thank you very much!

Andy,
I'm disconnected from the internet for a short while. I'm deciding whether to switch providers. I will call Darren Rathbone to get your phone number and then I will give you a call. Oter than that, you can go to Cliffslider.com and look at the bottom of the home page for my contact information. If you call me, make it in the evening West Coast time. Then we can hang up and I'll then call you on my dime.

The finger pucks on Timeship gloves work very well with a start ramp pull. I feel they even give me an extra bit of grip cause they hook around the handles nicely. I've never had them hang up, Will Brunson and I use them for every run. Look in the new Concrete Wave for our ad in which the Girls National TS Champion is pictured ready to pull out off the ramp in her TimeShip gloves.
Jonathan, you know we will hook you up with the best! The choice of more racers than all other slide gloves combined.
Cliff, have your new ones arrived?

Harms, funny you should mention just this very subject. I have been using slider gloves for along time now (from my downhilling and sliding background) and at the Dixie Cup I found it hard to pull off the start ramps because my pucks were too big to get a good grip. I am working on a pair of gloves now using impact tool gloves from Lowe's (or Home Depot) and smaller palm pucks. I will let you know how that turns out. My gloves are simple glue ons but Cliff may have a better solution with gloves that are already on the market.
What do you say Cliff? Got any suggestions.

Cliff, after almost three years of slaloming and falling hard only twice (once due to a preventable equipment failure), in the past two WEEKENDS I've managed to beef it twice onto my hands and elbows while riding slalom. Guess I'd forgotten how much it hurts!
Needless to say, the next item on my shopping list is a good, compact pair of slider gloves that don't interfere with pulling out of a starting ramp.

WE'RE OUT THERE DOIN IT AND HAVIN RIGHT? I'M PUTTIN IN A ORDER WITH SOLIDSKATE FOR GRAVITY'S JESSE PARKER DECK, INDY STAGE 9 149'S, SOME SERGIO YUP SLIDER WHEELS (99a), ANGLE RISERS TO STEADY OUT SOME SPEED, CROOK RAILS CAUSE I WANT 'EM, AND THROWIN IN AN ALVA BAG TO CARRY IT THREW A MILITARY LIFE AND STILL FEEL COOL. TOTALY AWAITING YOUR OPINION BEFORE CONFIRMING.... BACK TO THE AXLE ISSUE... NOW THAT WE GOT THREE SETS THAT ARE TWEEKED OR BROKE, WHERE CAN WE GET SOME REPLACEMENT HANGERS? AND WHAT STYLE? Hi all
THERES NO ONE ELSE ON THIS ISLAND TO OUR KNOWLEDGE THAT IS DOING ANYTHING LIKE THIS... WE'RE TOTALY ISOLATED OUT HERE, IT'S AWESOME IN SOME WAYS, BUT I WANT MORE KNOWLEDGE AND TO SEE WHAT THE STANDARDS OUR FOR COMPETING
I know how you feel. As far as i know I'm the only slider in wellington New Zealand and it fantastic in some ways, i will develop my own unique flavor of sliding but its crap to have to hit the hills by my self all the time. No one to push me or give me advice...
the only feed back i seem to get is from cars telling me to get of the @%$#@@ road etc.
I'm trying to get enough cash together to do a pilgrimage to Berkeley to skate with other plastic handed riders and i also put out the offer of a bed, food and a car with driver to take us to some of the most amazing UNRIDDEN hills in NZ ...... Go on cliff come down under. Think rolling green hills, sheep and the smell of hot 'thane
At the moment I'm riding a deck that's more for carving and longboard surf style riding (cross stepping, nose riding ,drop knee turns etc) with 180s and Gravity sliders which does slide 180 ok but its really hard to get back so i end up doing stand up 180s kick turns as by the time i have slid 180 i don't have enough speed to pull it back. I think its because of a too long WB and wide wheel width.
I'm working on my new deck which should be off the mold late next week. Kicks, concave and a 20" wb a tiny bit of camber so it will still carve well. What are your opinions of using glass/carbon around a wooden core? I know DH riders don't like it too much as it tends to resonate a lot more than just wood. Whats a good choice for trucks? i was thinking 150s so i can still carve etc but keep the wheel width within the deck.
Thanks for all the help Jestah

A FEW FRIENDS AND MYSELF HAVE BEEN SELF LEARNING SLIDES AND RECENTLY REALIZED THE AMOUNT OF WORK DONE BEFORE US. WE STARTED OUT WITH A JIMMY SLINGER COMPLETE I BOUGHT ON CLEARANCE FROM A SHOP IN O.B. (SAN DIEGO). I MOVED OUT TO OKINAWA JAPAN WITH IT AND WAS HAVIN SOME FUN BUT WANTED TO GO FASTER!!! THEN WE DISCOVERED LANDYACHTZ... STARTED OUT WITH ONE EVO ON RANDAL DOWNHILLS AND 97MIL FLYWHEELS. AWESOME SPEED... WE LOVED IT SO WE ORDERED 3 MORE. WELL... THE SPEED WAS GREAT AND WE FOUND SOME REALLY FUN RUNS BUT EVERY NOW AND THEN THERE WAS A NEED TO STOP. WE WERE EITHER COASTING IT OUT OR EATING $#*+ BEFORE WE TRIED SLIDING. STARTED SLIDING TO STOP ALL RIGHT AT LOWSPEED UNTIL ONE DAY MY BOY SY DOIN ABOUT 70kmh AND CAME UP ON A SEMI BLOCKING THE ENTIRE ROAD--- HE RE-EVENTED THIS FAMOUS COLEMAN SLIDE. AFTER THAT WE WERE ALL AMPED AND WANTED TO SEE WHAT ALL WAS POSSIBLE. WE STARTED RUBBER CEMENTING PLASTIC TO OUR LEATHER GLOVES... ALL THAT KIND OF STUFF. ONLY A FEW WEEKS AGO DID WE START LOOKIN AROUND ONLINE TO FIND OUT HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE OUT THERE DOIN THIS. THERES NO ONE ELSE ON THIS ISLAND TO OUR KNOWLEDGE THAT IS DOING ANYTHING LIKE THIS... WE'RE TOTALY ISOLATED OUT HERE, IT'S AWESOME IN SOME WAYS, BUT I WANT MORE KNOWLEDGE AND TO SEE WHAT THE STANDARDS OUR FOR COMPETING. WHAT REALLY GOT ME TO WRITE ALL THIS, I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE HAS BENT RANDAL AXLES? I GUESS IT'S DUE TO SOFT 97m WHEELS.... IT'S TIME WE INVEST IN SOME GOOD SLIDE SET UPS SO WE CAN QUIT HURTING OUR STICKY WHEELS AND PRETTY DH TRUCKS. WHATS THE SET UP? KICK TAIL 36IN, INDY 169, AND SOME LIKE 70m 100a'S? DELIVER US TO THE NEXT LEVEL CLIFF, BARTON

Good to hear from you! m I'm glad your on the net. I'm sorry you and the guys won't be here for the contest in Dec. Keep inventing those cool slides Mark.
For those of you who don't know, Mark Short is one of the best sliders out there. He won the Slide Championships this past Summer in Cornwall.

Hey Cliff,
Your new prototypes are on their way and we incorporated several of the suggestions that you've given me over the past year. We built them around an all leather glove with even more Kevlar protection and we moved the wrist wrap to secure on the top not the bottom. The double pucks were heat pressed in a vise and should hold up better, but I do see how the taller they are the more prone they are to tip or break away......so I also sent you some of the stock ones (1/4 inch) in a higher density.
I've sent along a pair of Bear Paws for you to lend out to skaters wanting to learn slides too. Let me know when you get the goods,

Darren,
Thanks for the memories. I don't think I ever saw that issue? The move is called a dirt grind, for the lack of a better name. If you do it in the gutter, it's called a gutter grind. You can get the deck all the way off the road surface and even do one footers. With enough speed, you can stay in the dirt and off the road for maybe 20 to 60 feet and still get it back on the road again.
By the way, you are a great slider and I wish you could be at the December Slidefest in San Diego, CA. Anytime you get over here you can stay at my place. Tell your room mate her boy friend says hello.
Also, please thank Chris at Shiner for all of the help he provided this past tour.

Joey,
I have had my glove catch on one of those rubber traffic counters that resemble a garden hose. It took the glove right off of my hand and left me with a blister on my palm. If you had a puck attached with velcro, it would have probably come off. Then the velcro would have taken a beating and possibly need to be replaced. The good point here is you shoulder would be ok if the puck released. The hand would be somewhat protected by the glove with just velcro. Remember, if this were tpo happen to you, you would probably need to replace the glove and get a new one with useable velcro.
