I just went to check out this potential ditch in Reston VA. It is dry now but appears that with any kind of rainfall it will be wet most of the year. If it does not rain I am going to skate it on Sunday. It has been skated before. Someone has placed a few curbs for grinding. It is located behind a Target shopping center under the toll road. I will post an update soon.

Great news about the Waldorf, MD park. Today, we just had our first meeting with the Arlington County Virginia skatepark project manager. It was only a "meet and greet" but we were stoked to see that Arlington County is 100% go on the deal. Check out the web page that is regularly updated on our park.
The money, land and builders have been lined up for the park. The next step is to come up with a design and address issues such as free v. fee, hours, pads, etc. The County expects to start building the park next spring (2002). The size is a bit small at 12,800 sq. feet but that should be enough to build a cool park.
Starting next week the Arlington skateboard community will meet regularly to discuss the Arlington Skatepark at the Common Grounds Coffee and Tea House located on Wilson Blvd. near the Clarendon Metro Station. We will set the exact time and date and post it soon. Right now it looks like we will be meeting weekly on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 6:30pm to 8:00pm. All will be invited including skaters that are friends of Arlington County.
I hope that we can come up with a park that will be as good as the Waldorf Park but different. It would sure be nice to build something like the snake run parks up in British Columbia, all while having enough street course area to keep all the new school skaters happy. Well , Arlington County will need help on this one.
Laters, DR
PS, A public thanks goes out to Arlington County, Robert Capper-County Skatepark Project Manager, John Riley, and those that started the ball rolling on this park project over the last two years (drop me an e-mail if you know who they were).

I am in Princeton, NJ. Any Jerseys kids around here should e-mail me and inform me of any hills you have located. I have found some pretty decent hills on the very outside of Princeton. Can get like 30 mph on most of the hills.

Skikki - Cool!
I hope to be at the toll booths or the first lot on Saturday morning for some leftovers.
I'll try to send an email tomorrow when my plans firm-up. It would be great to have alternatives for those times when you drive all the way down there and the surf is unrideable.
Repairman - I started riding mine on the basketball court (wood) inside the building that houses my gym. It was Winter, but it spawned some cool full contact sports of different kinds...like roller basketball and kill the guy on the board.

Thanks Jake. A friend told me to just ride the Sea wall and look at the bikini clad scenery. I know it's mostly flat so I guess it won't be a bad deal, just cruise in the sun. Of course the real hard part will be ditching the wife and kids. ha ha. Thanks again.

Hey I live in houston. As you will find there ain't shit to ride out here. I haven't ever been riding on the island (galveston) so I don't know. But if you go through downtown houston stop into memorial park and around that area.
To anyone else in houston.... On the north side in harris there is a new subdivision being build. In the back there are some nice hills. Very pretty because there are big trees and the raod crosses a creek or two. The name is RIDGE LAKE SHORES. I'm not sure when the roads get paved but it shouldn't be long.

Anyone know of a longboard friendly ride in Galveston, TX? Going with the family on vacation, so I probably won't have a lot of time to ride. Any help would be mucho appreciated. Off topic, go to www.bobstricktips.com and read my longboard reviews under "Grumpy Ol Bastard". Thanks again.

Anyone else in the Philly area? I live in Abington, and am just now getting into the sport. Lots of hills (gentle, mid, steep) with variable traffic. I'm in grad school in Glenside, and don't know anyone else over 13 who longboards.

Andy - let me know the next time you're surfing the hook and in the highlands area. I also surf Sandy Hook to manasquan...wherever it's breaking. (south swell building now...should continue to the weekend!) Anyway, last week, a buddy and I skated all over Highlands. Ocean Blvd was one of the best runs I've found around here so far. About a 4-5 minute ride at a solid 20-25mph. good pavement and nice turns.

The construction of a new concrete park mastered by Wally Holiday in Waldorf has finally been approved. Estimated grand opening is spring 2002. This gated park will be 15,000 sq ft with half setup for some wild street courses and the other half containing varied deepth interconnecting bowls for unlimited lines and designed for speed. Skate, Blade Bike. The local skaters worked hard to keep this on top of the commisioners list of must do projects. I thank everyone from this site that gave me info and direction to getting this first rate park built.

hey tex, try bahia road (lane, street, whatever) in novato. five or so lanes wide, and dead in the morning. two sides to the story, the east side: a little more hard core, steep on top, mellows for a little bit, then really steep at the bottom. run out is either heading south (right) at the bottom, or just sliding out. the west side is steep on the top, but mellows out for a good distance that doesn't lose speed for a while, then dies out. also, sunset parkway in novato. go east on this street from the top of the hill until it levels out. there is a section in the middle and at the top where you can pick up some decent speed. there are a bunch in the north gate region north of the mall. i hear mt. tam is nice at night if you can see and if it's not too cold. i've always wanted to skate some of the roads between 101 and 1, but haven't been able to hit those hills yet. there are some decent places to skate in san rafael that i've found as well. i'll post when i put together a ride in san rafael with the guys from slouch longboards and some friends, you should join in.....but i've got to work now, so later!

Cool, more Jerseyites. Unfortunately most of my riding has been limited to 25 second rides in the parking lots around my work (Burlington Mall) or home. Makes it kinda hard to learn, but I'm trying! I've heard the parking garage at Bally's in AC is nice though...

I'm up the Parkway in Union County, but I surf from Sandy Hook to LBI. Mostly the Hook though so I would be interested in anything you've found by you too. Most of the pavement I've seen on my way down rt. 36 is nasty, but there are some hills around the Highlands.
Good to know it's not just me and Herbn out here!

I'm going to be surfing in Baja the last week of August (man I can't wait!!), and should have a day or two Labor Day weekend, in San Diego.
Can anyone point out some cool places to ride, or would anyone like to show me some cool spots on your coast?? I do more carving than flatland, but I'm open to trying anything that anyone else likes to ride. I would be carrying my 50" flat-deck carver. I would love to get on something a little longer than the 1/2 mile runs back here in NJ.
Any ideas would be great.
Thanks! Andy

Slappy, OH MY GOD!, Franconia is still skatable!!!! Franconia was to home of so many 1st for me. 1st time doing this, 1st time doing that, 1st time hearing this punk bank, 1st time hearing that punk bank, etc, etc, etc. Back in the day the trainee's from the FBI Academy used to come over to watch us during thier lunch break. It was so funny because they'd be standing over by the edge murmering amongst themselves about how funny we looked with our mohawks and colored hair and we be doing the same about them and thier straight-edge FBI look.

for any of those interested in B.C. (i.e.: zoomer): being a mountainous sort of place, it abounds in sweet hills. According to the Landyachtz peeps, the sea-to-sky highway to squamish is good--never ridden it. Check out Gaglardi way to Simon Fraser University for an incredibly long and sweet four-lane hill -- definitely night riding, though. I would also go to White Rock, which has an abundance of smooth new pavement and lots and lots of hills-- scary, scary hills, some of them, too, so scout your runs, practise your colemans. Bring your car. it's the burbs. The White Rock skate park is really nice as well. The PNE is on Hastings St. and Renfrew or Rupert (sorry it's been a while since I've been home)--it's easy to find-- it is -- or used to be one of the major geographical landmarks of Vancouver. I don't know where the bowls are, exactly... help, anyone? Other than that, just go to the city, take the bus, your longboard, and check stuff out... there's plenty of room to run and a lot of streets are really great. All the skateparks are free. Yay Canadian "Socialism"!
