cybrpnkr,
I think that that ranger was handing you a line of BS concerning WI state law against skating. I used to live in Appleton (I went to Lawrence), and I rolled past cops on my longboard on several occasions and never had a problem. I do know a couple friends who got stopped, but it was always just warnings, nothing serious. (Funny side story, a cop actually made a friend of mine blow into a breathalyzer when he was out on his longboard! Even though he was drunk, he still got off with a warning.) Anyway, I know that hill in high cliff that you're talking about. Killer hill! I don't get back to Appleton too often anymore (I live in Virginia now), but whenever I do I'd love to go hit that hill. Maybe I'll drop you an email the next time I'm up that way.

High Cliff State Park, Wisconsin
On 8/9/2001 cybrpnkr wrote in from (204.71.nnn.nnn)

Am I one of Wisconsin's only longboarders? Shoot me an email if you live in the Appleton area. The sport doesn't really make much sense in the flat as a board midwest. This State park is near Oshkosh if you know anything about Wisconsin. Well this place would be a great place to go and longboard if it wasn't for the park rangers. They have a really long hill with a pretty extreme grade for my riding skill. Here is where the complaining starts. Last Sunday I was up there boarding with 2 of my friends, 2 longboards and a newschoolboard (the scene is just developing in the area, we don't have it all yet). Basically there are 2 small hills at the top of the big one we were riding for a while. Then 2 of us decide to tackle the big hill while the other one drives the car down. We did a mix of walking and sitting on our boards to get to the bottom 1/4 maybe of the hill or less. So I check uphill, no cars and begin to bomb it. Right when I turn the corner, behind where the trees were I see a Ranger in a pick-up truck sitting right there. He puts his hand out the window as if I am suposed to be able to stop (only learned slides on press day, no gloves at this point, it was commit). Anyways I coasted past some bikers at the bottom and eventually jumpped off the board and started walking to the parking lot. The ranger comes of like I knew he would and tells me that in Wisconsin, Skateboarding is illegal on EVERY street, state law. So I say what he wants to hear, so I don't get my brand new board taken away (can they do that?) and he lets me go and says he never wants to see it again. So what do I do about this? Is Wisconsin the only state lame enough to pull something like this? You can get busted for curfew after 10pm when the park is closed so going late night isn't an option. We have one other park with slightly decent hills, but nothing as steep as High Cliff park.

We should have a NJ get-together. Could be a cool little party and I'm sure some of us (me!) could learn some stuff. If anyone is interested, I would offer up my office park. Look up the intersection of Rt. 78 and the Parkway. It is near there.

Anyone that thinks this would be cool, can email me at sharkisland@prontomail.com

Skikki. I will let you know if anyone else might wanna ride for a while.

You guys gotta venture away from Rt 36! Plenty of smooth stuff back there. Let me know when you're in the neighborhood and I'll clue you in.

...and as I've said before, if anyone ever catches a show at PNC Bank Arts Center (in NJ) bring your board! Great hill behind the war memorial center....great!

Hey, it's great to see some folks from jersey here. I thought that it was just Herbn and me and friends. I'm up in Bergen county, Ridgewood, there are some decent runs around here, the longest i have come across right around here is a 1.2 mile one in town. The Highlands down by the hook seem like they would be good, but all that pavement is crap. Then again you can surf, so it's better then here. Good luck with the hills and keep that soul alive.

Two kids said "cool board" to me yesterday, so I stopped and showed them my ride. They wanted to know where you can get stuff like that, I told them I made the board but that wheels and trucks like that can now be found at a local shop (partially due to some old fart constantly hassling them about not having longboard gear). Turn the kids on to the good stuff and there will be more of it available for you and me. I have yet to get a negative reaction from any popsickle stick skater.

Glad to see that there are more Jerseyites out there. I've found some good stuff in Monmouth county, but still want to find longer rides....not steeper or faster, but longer. Anyone up north (my best guess) know any 15-20 minute rides?
Roads to carve big fast turns on?

I know, it's a long shot. I guess I should just move back to Colorado. ~~~~~

Arlington VA Skatepark

Trying to get an informal brain storming session tonight with John Riley at the Common Grounds Coffee house at 3211 Wilson Blvd just down from the Clarendon (Orange Line) Metro Stop tonight at 6:30pm lasting no longer than 8pm. It might end up just me and John but we have to start the fire with a small spark and then move on to bigger numbers of involved people. Issues need to be discussed include, the county plan for our park project, the park builder, the failure of the Lancaster, PA Park design (built by the company chosen for Arlington), the mistakes at the Chicago park, the successes at the Denver park, and what to do next.

I'm willing to meet with anyone even if John Riley can't make it. Arlington needs help on this one.

Logan Utah Skatepark
On 7/30/2001 Mark wrote in from (205.188.nnn.nnn)

The skatepark in Logan Utah is due to open on August 4th. Logan is a bit off of the beaten path here in the mountain west. But, well worth the diversion off the interstate.

This park has the potential to produce some pro's in the coming years. It has beginner, intermediate, and expert areas. The parks' highlight is a combi-pool with 8 foot trannys. Sorry, no pool coping, just the standard pipe in concrete configuration.

The park is longboard-friendly if board lengths are kept around 40-42". Lotsa kickturning and sliding fun for the family. I've got a Gravity park model set up with Indy 215's and Gravity Super G's (80A) for the opening.

The park is heavily guarded until opening. There are ways in. And few there are who know of them.

Come for a visit if you are through here in the future.

re: advice
On 7/30/2001 Repairman Cam wrote in from (208.37.nnn.nnn)

best thing to do is show your parents that you are responsible enough to ride...show them you're wearing appropriate safety gear like a helmet and pads.(you are wearing a helmet I hope) Educate them on how a longboard is more stable at speed than a conventional board. Remind them there are less healthy hobbies you could be spending time on...like Nintendo! (Personally I'm trying to get my son MORE interested in riding...trying to get him to loose that N64 gut.) Tell them you will always remain in control (ok you may have to fudge the truth on that one) and if worst comes to worse, wait til your neighbor heads to the mall for the day before you hit the hill.(or sneak out at night when everyone is asleep!)

i need some advice
On 7/30/2001 adrian wrote in from (216.26.nnn.nnn)

yesterday i was out riding, and was going down this hill about a mile away from my house.

so I'm bombing it, going REAL fast, and driving in the other lane, my neighbor is screaming "you're gonna kill yourself!" that didn't bother me much.(i just shrugged and kept going) but when I got back up on my way home, my parents were there. Not cool. so now my closest and only hill for 15 miles has my neighbor b**** watching over it. what is there that i can do!?!

I'll be flyin into Philly with LngBrd in hand looking forward to finding some clean hills from Philly to Brooklyn. and possibly Boston.
If you make it to San Diego - Bankers Hill, Long smooth streets that flow into downtown.
Good at night because they are well lit and relitively free of wheel snaggz.

Point Loma, real good residential hills. Overlooking the ocean - the feeling of surfing w/o getting sewage in yer kracks.
Just got a set of santa cruz Road Riders 71mm.
Good 4 da bad streets.
ride safe
