Herman, I don't really know what's going on up north of B-more, but there's Lansdowne, a big ol' pre-vert, 70s, concrete park on the southside of Baltimore, and the Vans Park south of D.C. Nowadays, there also seem to be all kinds of smaller, street-course, ramp parks sponsored by local governments, and, for all I know, there may be a bunch of them between Edgewood and Lansdowne. If not, both of these parks are worth their respective trips.

The final valley here that crosses into new york state, has the palisades cliffs and harrimann state park and just a bunch of steep little hills (under 700 ft) but there's good pavement just about everywhere and a lot of the good stuff is not that crowded with cars.

Arlington, VA Skatepark (Design Meeting)
On 8/26/2001 longboardkook wrote in from (63.208.nnn.nnn)

It's time to get back to working on the Arlington Skatepark. We will be meeting Tuesday 6:30 pm at the Common Grounds Coffee shop to go over the following:

- Come up with a questionnaire for skater design input. The questionnaire will include a blank section to draw/sketch ideas for the park layout.
- Determine how to distribute the questionnaire and how to retrieve them.
- Figure out how to get the word out to all of the Arlington skaters (flyers, email, etc.) about these design meetings.
- Discus the status of the contract with the skatepark builder.
- Set the next meeting date & time.

The Common Grounds Coffee and Tea House is located at 3211 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, VA (just down from the Clarendon Metro Stop on the Orange Line). If you have any questions, e-mail me.

Laters,
DR

US 140 Yosemite, CA area
On 8/26/2001 Duane wrote in from (63.21.nnn.nnn)

US 140 as you leave Yosemite through the El Portal is a very fine stretch of pavement, with snake turns nicely banked. Unlike the many excellent roads inside the park, where there is too much traffic and a bad mistake might result in a 1,000 ft. cliff fall, this stretch is quite lightly travelled and visibility is good since one side is open to the river. I believe there is a 6 to 7 mile continuous run in here, I only did part of it since I had to walk back up. There is probably 20 miles with only a few hundred yards total might be uphill. Blasting past the ranger station (in the middle of the run) might be a bad idea.

Top hill in a series of three hills connected by barely do-able 90 deg turns, new smooth on the middle street turns this into a A pro class, nah maybe B proclass downhill, 40ish to low 30's back to 40ish for the bottom,in street cloths.+5 to 10 if you were to sport an aero helmet and tightys, right here in northern NEW JERSEY.

Dover,Vt (just around the bend from Mt.Snow)
On 8/23/2001 Pre-School Rider wrote in from (209.198.nnn.nnn)

Just off of Rt.100 (to the right,if you're heading North)is a wonderful group of hills to the East,in and around the village of Dover.I found several ares of new tar,and even on the "old" tar,I find stretches that are still fairly smooth.Heading East towards Newfane, there's one run that meanders down 700 vertical ft. in three miles, with 1 1/2 miles being on new,ultra-smooth tarmac.Pull-offs are numerous, traffic is fairly light, and the speed limit is 35 mph, easily earning you a slot in the flow of traffic,if not a speedng ticket, too!Across the way,on the other side of Rt.100 is the Haystack Mt. road, which is in good shape(re-tarred two years ago)still.Go up towards the Golf Course(duck if you hear 'Fore'!)and you'll find steeps that force either tight-slalom like turns across the hill,or Coleman Slides to control the pull gravity has on you.Drops of 300 Vert. Ft. in 1 mile are easily found there, and some spots drop quicker, and longer, too. Beware that the Leaf-peeping season will be here in mid-September thru October, which means drivers that are not looking at the road..But,come through here in the next few weeks, and you'll find many roads that're only lightly travelled.Anyone from down-country looking to find that winter condo for the up coming snow season, bring a longboard with you,and pads.

Yowza! two streets in "ok"condition have been connected by crappy pavement for years, recently the crappy got a pipe installed, that is cut open and left vertually unpatched, well i checked it out a it's now fresh blacktop. Last night, fast 90 deg turns were reconquered AND filmed, the last one was smokin! but it was gettin dark, so the viddys kind of questionably lit, though i havn't seen it yet,it might be dark and spooky and convey the danger perfectly, like a blairwitch of skating:)

ONCE AGAIN,NEW GROUND(For me at least). My trip has gotten me into some UNBELIEVABLE spots.
Since i'm paying by the second, I'll keep this succinct:
EVERY TIME I'VE managed to get out the vdoor with my board,It's been good. the people at a company called NCC are largely responsible for the incredible condition of the roads here (which range from excellent to superb.)
HERE WE GÖ:
STROMSUND:BIG HILLS,VERY FEW PEOPLE
OSTERSUND:LOW,LONG HILLS; CURVY ROADS,(SPEEDSTYLISTS TAKE NOTE)
STOCKHOLM:YOU COULD RIDE HERE FOR 20 YEARS and NEVER RUN OUT OF OPEN ROADS
OREBRO:A LITTLE FLAT; BUT I HIT THIRTY ON THE FLAT WITHOUT EVEN HAVING A GOOD DAY (I can't say enough about the condition of the roads)
IN SHORT, IF YOU'RE COMING TO ANY TOWN OR CITY IN THIS COUNTRY,
BRING YOUR BOARD.......,IF YOU DON'T,YOU'LL BE SORRY LATER... (WHEN IT FINALLY GETS DARK AROUND THREE IN THE MORNING)
REMEMBER.......LIGHT'EM UP WHEREVER YOU ARE!!!!

PS TO DEANO IN SPOKANE...LOOK UP DOUG CLAYTON,I THINK HE CAN FIND YOU SOME VELOCITY...

Middletown, CT
On 8/22/2001 Joe wrote in from (198.204.nnn.nnn)

Hey Eliot, a hlf hour up the road from New Haven is Middletown. I grew up there riding the Wesleyan University campus and downtown. Wesleyan has smooth walkways tha serpentine around the campus. The science tower has great 3 foot high block for drops, there are tunnels with downhills under the dorms (security), and foss hill by the observatory is a great grass down hill when the sun bakes it hard in the summer time.

Just in front of the chapel is william street. You can ride all the way to the river if you make the lights. You can run out the first light if you don't, but light two on Main St will require a slide if you miss it.

Main Street has wide sidewalks from the bridge, all downhill. For a safer more rural cruise, Mile Ln out by the Cromwell border is a short, but very steep down hill that you can see traffic on a long way off.

Get in touch if you want to ride.
