Anyone from New York know any good runs close to West Point? I go to school up here and there is this one hill that runs from right between the football stadium and the resevior down for >.5 miles. It's really smooth and has some nice speed to it along with curves. Not much traffic either if there isn't a football game going on. There are a few more hills around the campus, but if anyone could give me some spots around the area that are nice I'd appreciate it. ...Also any spots on Long Island? I'd love to find some new spots to go w/my little bro.

I'm up there Monday-Thursday, but Monday afternoon is the only free time, so hopefully can have some fun. I'll bring a speedboard, a carve board, and a slalom deck.
Thanks

may i call you c-$?...
here's the juice ~ @ sundance there are some tasty steep runs drawbacks... narrow and blind corners around the cabins & condos you might find some safer roadways ~ @ the canyon there is a trail which starts @ vivian park next 2 bridal veil falls and meanders down the canyon a nice mellow cruise on a paved path watch 4 cyclists joggers & walkers... beautiful fall foliage this time o' year!
~ in the valley @ provo... check out temple hill you can't miss it it literally is the hill where the lds temple is a big building w/a tall gold spire located @ 900 e. & 2200 n. ~ you get a double shot of .5 milers on either side of the temple very very wide 4 carvin' and limited traffic (easy 2 dodge w/the wide lanes) ~ behind the temple & up the hill@ 1450 e. there is a nice long fairly steep 1.3 mile run lot's o' carvin' should be ok 4 daytime traffic just a residential area w/driveway traffic ~ also check out 300 s. and roughly1500 e. it's a road which comes off the hill @ 300 s. take 300 s. directly east up the mountain and you are there... great run @ 1.5 miles limited traffic watch 4 some blind corners nice curves and fairly wide speed runs out @ the bottom
that's a good mix...there are other runs a plenty but hard 2 describe there whereabouts... have fun & carve hard!! ~ i'd hook up w/you but i'm doing an allday acting workshop

I am from fort collins and have skated the northern passes, or parts of them, for awhile now. Cameron Pass, where I backcountry ski is awesome for skating. Rabbit Ears has some nice stretches from the West Summit back down to the east(very do-able, good run-out). The West descent down into the Yampa valley and Steamboat would take some massive cahones (70 mph looks like no problem !). this has got to be one of the longer descents in the state (up there with Wolf Creek Pass). The last steep pitch (maybe the last 2 miles) looks more do-able and very fun. Problem is its a major highway, some traffic is always present and the state patrol sits at the bottom for speeders often.
was just in Estes Park this weekend. I like some of the hills on the Glen Haven RD as you come into Estes. Not super long or steep but good run-outs, and little traffic early in a.m. Also, when Trail Ridge Rd. closes at Many Parks Curve, often you can skate beyond the closure up to Rainbow Curve (incredible view of the Mummy Range )then run it all the way back down; maybe 5- miles ?). Oct-Nov before the snow hits this part of the road is the time.
Another great one is the descent on The Peak-to Peak CO highway 7 from near Ward down to Peaceful Valley; it is about 5 miles long, is in very good shape and little traffic early. My friend , Pat Naylor who won the X-Games downhill inline race a few years ago trained up there.

Anyone who has enjoyed Cambria will LOVE this spot!Just past the Park Meadows Golf Course and Country Club lies a group of roads built to service houses that won't be built for at least another year! Various gradients, steep, shallow, windy and all separate....and all supersmooth! The only time we have been disturbed is by an inquisitive cow, who comes over to watch whenever we skate! She doesn't seem that impressed, but usually hangs around quietly watching....(and learning?)

If you are heading out of Roanoke going towards Martinsville keep an eye out for the drain ditch on the right hand side of the road. It is about a 1/4 of a mile after 581 spills into 220. It is located near the new Lowes. There is also a storage facility in the vacinity and it is located right behind the bank and i think there is also an eye Dr's office. it is banked on both sides and then it curves right so there is a huge wall on the left side to control the water it then straightens back out. There are a few more of these in the area. Let me know if you need better directions or have any feedback on this spot.

There's a place out near Chicago that we like to skate that is also the... er, ahem, Arboretum (something-or-other). It's a well-kept secret for now because it is on private property. Hard to describe but this place has an open area with a relatively steep drop right next to a "roofed" area (open garage) for cyber (on both floors) or spectator viewing. Anybody who visits our great city is welcome to contact us for a blindfolded Knucklehead escort to this secret location. It's my preferred driving method especially when I have a bad case of double vision!

1 1/2-mile run on the west side of town, near Rocky Mtn. National Park. Just before the main entrance to the Park, turn left on the road that goes towards the YMCA Camp (Estes Park Center); the run starts just above the entrance to the Y. Drive the 1 1/2 or so miles to the Estes Park Campground, where the pavement ends. Again, fairly new asphalt (1-2 years old) and very smooth, but gets rough at the entrance to the Y. It was a bit fast for my abilities, as I haven't learned to slide yet. But, some of you more accomplished skaters who are comfortable at faster speeds might enjoy it. Also, look out for wildlife. In one run, I saw deer, coyote and a herd of elk.
E-mail me if you have any questions. Thanks! Duane

Hmmm this could be tough. Its right off the Jamaica Way which turns in to the Arbor Way in Jamaica Plain. So you want to go past Fenway park and hop on there, thats if you have a car. By train I think if you took the Green line, I think the E line. According to the MBTA map it ends at the Arborway. I think you would have to walk/skate over to the Arboretum. When you get off just ask someone where it is. Sorry I can't be more specific. I don't know the green line that well. If you get over there and see a guy with a 60 inch pintail (limited edition made by a local) then say hello. I have seen another skater there, but never really talked to him, cause he was leaving. Its worth the trek, make a day out of it. Just be aware of the West Nile Virus and mosquitos.
By the way if you take a bus to Arlington Heights and jump on the bike path from there (its behind the Trader Joes) there is a slight downhill grade (not noticible to the eye) but you can practically cruise all the way to Arlington Center with not many kicks. Oh yeah this is heading back towards Somerville. Does that make any sense? Your talking about the Minuteman Bike Path right? Well if not, then you should try that if the T is your mode of transportation.

Hey Drake-
I've only been longboarding for about 5 months. Last winter was my first season snowboarding (never ski'd either) and I wanted something to do in the summer to keep my balance sharp and maybe start working on goofy stance (I'm regular). I've got a freeride crosstown with exkate trucks (the exkates rock!).
Anyways I stick mostly to the Davis Square area where I live and there are some decent hills and pavement but around but nothing longer the 2/10ths of a mile that I've seen. Other than what I mentioned before I'll do that path that goes through Davis and out into Arlington every once in a while. Haven't branched out much besides that.
Could you give directions to that Arboretum, is it near a T stop? Thanks!

Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain Mass

Wow someone from Mass that rides a longskate! I have been riding them around here for 5 years and have only seen a handful of riders. I have found some good spots in Brookline and Brighton. Not sure where that green line spot could be? Must be in Brookline, but if thats the case its not that great. If you remember the area I may be able to help.
I skate at the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain as often as I can. It kicks ass. Closed to traffic, a long winding paved hill that is two lanes wide. I am not sure how long it is but it takes about two minutes to carve to the bottom. You can bomb it or carve it, its pretty mellow. There is another hill in another section park that is a bit sketchy, steeper, more blind corners. Watch out for dogs, and people walking, as it gets really crowded.
What do you ride Ryan? Know any other good spots?

Packard Ave on the campus of Tufts is the best I've found in the Somerville/Boston area. Mem Drive on Sundays is ok for mellow cruising. Alrington Rd which feeds onto Mass Ave near Porter Square is narrow but a good hill run as well. Anyone else have other recommendations for Boston/Somerville?
I actually talked to someone who flagged me down while I was riding to check out my board and he said he used to board on some long hill that followed one of the T green lines (>1 mile run according to him). He said he would catch the T outbound (free) and then board back inbound. I totally spaced it and forgot to ask him the stops. doh! Anyone have any idea where this might be?

Not a review because I am awful at vert and afraid to hit these parks, but for anyone interested in new concrete there is a huge new all concrete skatepark in Newburyport Mass, and a nice smaller concrete park in Hyde Park, Mass. The Newbury one has two big bowls, and a middle street section with banked sides. The Hyde Park one has a street section and a nice bowl. Check out www.skatespots.com for info. Scroll down for newburyport, click on user submissions for Hyde park.
