Hi Jeff. I don't know if you checked out the post I left for Joe, but you got to check out the Gainesville area. As an old Florida local I can tell you it would be worth your while. If given the chance to do it all again then Gainesville would be my 1st stop on the tour. Hook up w/ Joe & some of the other Tampa crew & roadtrip your butts to Gainesville. Throughout skating history, it's always been about the roadtrip (sigh)/;-)henry

Man, the cops in Sacramento got my ride last night. I went to a local school to grind and they not only gave me a ticket, but they took my board. What's up with that ???
Hard lesson....STAY AWAY FROM ALL SACRAMENTO/ORANGEVALE/FAIR OAKS CALIFORNIA SCHOOLS !!!!!!! OR YOU MIGHT BE NEXT.....

dude, I'm assuming the Portland you're referring to is in Oregon. Should be some runs on either side of Sylvan hill on the west side of town. My folks live in Lake Oswego and it seems like they're should be some slopes in that neighborhood. If you've got a car, scout out for new subdivisions north of Sunset Highway out as far as 185th. If I'm wrong, oh well, I'm just a Knucklehead from Eugene. Anyone from Portland please chime in.

There are several hills in this vicinity. Alderman Rd., Klosterman Rd. and Anderson park. I'm on the lookout for longboard riders, since I'll be moving (back) to Fla in a month or so. any connections?

Hi Joe. If you get a chance head on up around the Gainesville area & check out some of the hills around there. If my memory serves me, there's even a little downhill ditch w/ a shallow bank on the left & a steeper one on the right. There's also this WAY cool downhill through a residential area that has a nice left curve. The only problem is I can't remember exactly where they're @ since the last time I skated those spots was in the late 70's. I'm sure if you hit up any of the local skaters up there, especially on campus, you may get the perfect coordinates on these spots. Good luck/;~)henry sarria

Best place I've found so far in town is on Florida avenue in Tampa. I think everyone can agree(without getting defensive) that Florida is severely lacking in the large hills department. So if you live in Tampa then you know my plight. But don't dispair, there is hope yet. Go to Florida Ave. and Waters Ave.(if you live in Tampa you should know where this is, if not get a map.)From this spot you should see the hill but if you are daft then skate south(towards river)It is not a very long run but it is pretty fun. once you get to the river there is a short climb and another very short downhill run.Watch out for cars as it is a fairly major road. Also if you want to drive a bit you can go north on 75 to the pasco county highway 41 exit (between state road 52 and state road 50) There are some decent hills around there if you are willing to drive to find them. Thanks, peace.

Hey Patrick,
Santa Barbara Rocks! I went to UCSB and lived there for 6 years. It’s the FUNNEST SCHOOL IN THE WORLD! The best weather, the hottest chicks and campus is on the beach. How could you go wrong? There are no super steep hills (like Berkeley’s Hillard) in S.B., but it's still fun. Don’t listen to Cliff, go there anyway.
Get a map and check these out:
Los Alturas- You’ll love this one. It’s over looking all of Downtown S.B. Killer 2 miles with about 5 hairpins. Great pavement and awesome driveways, but no street lights. The bottom is the intersection of Los Alturas and Alameda Padre Sierra. Drive up until the road flattens. There’s a gravel parking space on the left. Park there.
Loma Media- Branches off of Los Alturas around the top. 4 Hairpins. Not as steep as Los Alturas.
Eucalyptus- About 1 mile long. 2-3 hairpins. Excellent pavement. Start at the intersection of Eucalyptus and Alameda Padre Sierra. Not a steep sliding run, but still fun.
Santa Barbara City College Campus- There is a bike path that comes down the back of SBCC campus. It ends at the park on the corner of Castillo and Cabrillo. It’s a ¼ mile shoot with 1 sweet hairpin. It’s not that long, but it’s SO FUN!!
My Favorite is:
Painted Cave Rd- Take San Marcos Pass (Highway 154) up to the mountains. Just around the top take a right onto Painted Cave road. That’s the bottom of the run. Drive up a couple of miles until you hit a straightaway and see a huge rock on the right side of the road. Park and skate. There are probably 5 hairpins and perfect pavement. When you’re done and you drive down, instead of turning left back onto San Marcos Pass, go straight down Old San Marcos Pass. The pavement SUCKS, but you will see 3 of the CRAZIEST hairpins you’ve ever seen. They’re almost 270 degree turns. It’s worth checking out.
I live in Long Beach now, but I’m always in Santa Barbara and always looking to skate. Drop me an email if you like and let me know when you’re going.
Have Fun!!
Later,
Jesse

This is a great begginers run, nice and smooth not to fast. We use this as our training grounds there are three runs there.
For the fastest run check out Bracken Drive but be careful on the blind bend at the bottem.

hey Rob. Don't worry bro, I don't forget. We're on once you get back which should be today judging from the fact that school's started. Drop by. I'm @ 6651 Sueno #2 (the middle unit). I'm off to go running now, but always in after dark. Do stop by & we'll set up a skate trip to REVERE (YEAH !). You'll love that place. Something for everyone/;~)henry

Hi Cliff. Cool to know you remember iverson. Did some scanning electron microscope pictures for him of the wood/glue bondline in laminates. Working w/ him was fun. I'm going to do some research on some hills in the Carpinteria area just south of here (actually, I live in Isla Vista). There's another spot I forgot to mention. It's called "The separator" (SP separated his shoulder there). It's a little ditch, dowhill, pretty fast w a wide, sweeping turn & a ride out spot. It's up be the oil refinery in Mariposa Reina 20 min. north of here. Now one question I have: Is this THE Cliff Coleman of downhill & slalom fame from back in the day ?

Patrick,
Eli is correct when he says that sliding in Santa Barbara is nothing like Berkeley. If on the other hand you would like to learn new styles of riding, then hook up with Henry Sarria and also go to Powell and look up Chris Iverson. Tell Chris that Cliff sent you. He knows of all the areas to skate also. There was one great hill in Montecito that I found when we went there to skate. It is called Park Lane. It was featured in the video Future Primitive. The problem as Henry states is that Montecito is a wealthy community and Park Lane is a private road leading to some mansions. The owners probably won't want you there?
If you are really looking for hills as your reason for choosing a college, then I suggest you stay in Berkeley and go to Cal.

Patrick, welcome to S.B. I've been living here for 13 years now & know all the spots. The best in my humble opinion is the Flyaway. It's a ditch, 2 sides w/ a railing on the top (if you dare). There's Lincoln School w/ a little bank to wall. Sadly enough, Washington School, Flybowl, Tea Gardens, Walls & Bayou are gone. There's also a little downhill cruise section in Montecito (the Beverly Hills of S.B.). The ONLY problem w/ Flyaway & the Montecito run is that winter is upon us & there's flooding or flow in those areas. A few of us are planning trips down to L.A. (2 hours) to skate spots like Revere, Mar Vista, Palisades & some other crazy spots. When you get here look me up in the phone book. Good luck @ UCSB & get in touch/;~)henry sarria
