Hi again JT. Glad to hear you got to do some exploring in my old neck of the woods. Now for some adventure. If you wan t a pretty fast donwnhill to test a speed board on, may I suggest Manning Ave. in Cheviot hills. The best spot is just past Dunleer. It goes north to Pico Blvd. That's where I used to test all my speed boards. Give it a recon run & let me know if it's still happening. Best of luck /;~)henry

Hey Henry, just got back from looking for new hills on the northside of Santa Monica. Found a fun run at 23rd Street from San Vicente down to Georgina, there's a nice long-hill street with room for big S-turns and then goes uphill again after crossing Georgina. Went back and forth on those hills about 5 times. A couple of cars every once in a while , but no real traffic, and a safe place to get some quick downhill speed.

Recently I rode downhill for four miles in Santa Monica on a Saturday. I sometimes ride my longboard down Montana Avenue from 16th Street to Ocean Avenue early in the morning and that's a good ride if you're up early when there's no traffic. Best section is 15th to 14th Street because it's steepest there. The rest is pretty mellow. One day I decided to go north on 16th Street because it is uphill too. When I got to 16th and Carlyle I looked east and followed the hill all the way to 26th and Carlyle. I knew that gravity would take me far as long as I didn't fall, so I jumped on my board and wondered how far I'd go without taking my feet off the deck.
The beginning of the ride was fun. I picked up a good cruising speed. There were streams of water running through a couple of streets, so I jumped curbs to keep my wheels dry. When I hit 16th I turned left and the ride to Montana was pretty slow, but I made it and as soon as I turned right on Montana I picked up speed and hauled down to Ocean. There I turned left on and headed towards the Santa Monica Pier. There are traffic signals on Montana and Ocean, so I had to time the green lights by stalling with wide turns. Fortunately I made them all. Eventually I passed the pier and the ride got really slow at that block so I pumped with my tail foot to make it through the flat section. Immediately I made a right on the first street past the pier, Seaside Terrace, and that was the steepest part of the ride. I had to traverse back and forth to keep from wobbling. I almost made it but suddenly the board started shaking and I jumped off to avoid wiping out. I checked a map later and calculated that I'd gone 4 miles. The pavement is rough in some parts of the ride and that was a bummer, but it was worth it and fun.
Later that day I successfully got down Seaside Terrace and turned left on Appian Way and rode that slow grade down to Shutters Hotel and cruised down the winding path to the beach.

we have brakes and I can stop just as fast if not faster than a car, not only that I can turn sharper than a car which means I can get out of the way of the way of things quicker, NOT only that I'm way more stable than a cyclist and I'm, prepped to fall a lot more than most cyclists, they are prepped to fall in a swimming costume and a styrofoam cup(according to darren lotts book) I think they should have skateboarders licences, like a test that you have to pass to get and stuff, you have to do a whole bunch of stop like hit a certain speed and then slow down to a certain speed in a certain distance, then a take a certain corner at a certain speed etc, like a drivers l;icence for sklaters

Everybody was all friendly with skateboarders during the X-games...try skating on the street now. Seems a little hypocritical to have a big skate contest in the center of a town known for its intolerence towards skateboarders...

Duane, the skateboard laws are created for two reasons:to keep the undesirables out of the business areas, and they have no brakes.First we need brakes, second we need to change the reputation that present day skaters portray. Thanks

Watch out fot the skatepark thing, if the city council approves it you may get a rude awakening: the banning of skating on city streets, since there's now a skatepark. Providence RI has a ban, I've been hassled by cops who say "why don't you use the skatepark". The one that's open 3 months of the year, costs money, and doesn't take me where I want to go. And most assuredly, has no 1/4 mile, 30mph runs.

Surfers have the beach. Snowboarders take to the mountains. And skateboarders use everything in between. Well, not quite.
For Newport Beach, the in between presents the problem. As a result, the city has restricted skateboarders from using any paved surface with a slope of 6% grade or steeper, as well as on benches, planters, railings and other structures.
Obviously, it's understandable that the city doesn't want to take any risks by allowing skaters to leap onto and off benches and the like. But prohibiting skateboarders from using surfaces of a 6% grade borders on the ridiculous. The city must create a more reasonable solution for skateboarders who are unlikely to skate with a protractor in tow.
If the City Council wants to stick to its decision to pile on the additional skating restrictions, it needs to solve the so-called problem with a skate park. Also needing to join the effort are Costa Mesa and the Newport-Mesa Unified School District.
All are need of appeasing the skateboarders who are finding fewer places to perform their activity of choice. Costa Mesa came up with somewhat of a solution in the form of the mobile skate park.
But a permanent solution must be found as skateboarding has proven to be much more than a passing fad.
Newport-Mesa, as a community, shares a school district, a police helicopter, a few sports leagues and more, so it would make sense to team up for a skate park from which both cities can benefit.
We urge all leaders involved to meet to come up with a solution to an issue that's not skating away.
